We in America can understand this, as the Hungarians and the Austrians are not very good friends. I do not think I should have any fear of traveling there for if I met with any difficulty I could take out my passport and show them the ''Spread Eagle," and they would remember hew kindly their noble Kos~ suth was received by our people. My companion also remarked that while at Brix en where he had remained some hours, he saw some very auspicious looking persons and he thought they might be Italians who had como up in this region to get work on the railway now in progress through the mountains. But this did not disquiet me. I had a feeling that I was going through safe and the event was according to my faith. )L PACKETS SAILS EVERT Oh! may the Almighty God whose hand Made the mountains high and strong, And clothed in beauty this fair land, Keep us from every wrong j That when our days have passed in love, And our last prayer is prayed, May soar our spirits far above The Bradford Palisade I THREE DATS. I said I dreaded the joujney because 1 feared I should suffer with a cold, having to travel all night in the diligence over the mountains, and having heard that the road was almost impassible from the deep Snows. It seemed to be quite a change from the warm climate of Italy, and the very comfortable railway cars. There were half a dozen ways of getting to Paris. One was to go back by the route I came ; but this seemed a long distance and I did not feel like retracing my steps and going over the same ground. I could go to Vienna the capitol of Austria, all the way by rail; but this was a long journey also, and when I got to that city after more than a day's ride, I would be farther from Par is ttian when I started from Venice. There were four or five other routes all involving more or less travel by diligence. I wished to go from Milan over the great road called the Simplon, which gives a grand view of the Alps, but was told that it was too early in the season ; and that the Brenner pass was the lowest, and would bo fflcmst I accordingly took it notwithstanding the difficulties of which I had heard of from others. I took care however to get reliable information, and not to listen to • class of persons who «n in the habit of finding fruit with everything while trawling. Borrowing SOMETHING NEW. LEWIS, And now we begin to ascend the mountains, We hare three horses abreast as I saw in some of the large omnibusaos in London and elsewhere. Instead of leather traccs they use ropes. We meet with more and more snow . I began to think we should soon hare to take runners and go over in slodges. But we met with large teams heavily laden with goods all along the way, which I judged must have come from the other side of the mountains.— It was not the wilderness I expected to pass through, for all along the way at short intervels there were houses, and now and then a town. Over the highest part of the road for some distance, the snow along the sides seemed to be quite deep, but along the track it had evidently been shoveled off, as we went over on bare ground. I afterwards learned that instead of the usual amount of snow much rain had fallen for soreral days; and was informed that at times when the winter was ■were, the road was really impassible. This however, has been an unusually mild Winter all over Europe, and I bare had the benefit of it Thia night seemed more like getting into Winter than anything I had realised, especially after the genial Spring which I experienced in Naples on the 1st day of March. I was well provided with a good thick ovorcoat, and had in addition my shawl, which had been my traveling companion on many a Winter's journey, as I went to my convocations. Thus I was perfectly comfortable, only now and then feeling very sleepy I would gee into a short nap which would be broken by some stop on the road. The road all the way was good. It was smooth and hard, well guarded either with railing or stone posts, wherever it would otherwise be at all dangerous.— It was not At all like our nairows in Pennsylvania on the borders of the Susquehanna. After reaching the summit, whioh was about midnight, I think, we began to move on more rapidly. The moon now lighted up the snowy peaks of the mountains, and I lelt anxious then to keep awake to catch all I could of the scenery. I think I never traveled over so crooked a road, as it necessarily must be to get through and avoid the high peaks. The railroad will be a marvel, greater even than that over the Appenines, which interested me bo much. Then the romance of travelling by diligence will be gone, while comfort and speed will be increased. Chas, Schlagei's Steam Bakery, SE WI1\G MA CHINES, April 27, 1865. I left Venice on Tuesday morning April 8d, having one more ride in a gondola on going from the hotel to the depot I had to retrace my steps as far back as Verona on the road towards Milan. Then I left the level Lombard plain, and went up among the mountains following the course of a little river.— Night set in before I arrived at Botzen the end of the railway as far an completed. Rain set in also, and it would have been a very disagreeable night to have set out for the ride over the mountains. I had already ascertained that I could leave the next afternoon at 2 o'clock, and thus havo part oi thii ride by daylight, So I took supper and passed the night at Botzen. I now realized that I had left Italy and was in another country. Every- I thing seemed different I was now in Austria. On sitting down to the table, there were several persons all talking in German, instead of Italian and French of which I had heard so much. And yet it seemed quite familiar although I could not understand a single word they said. It sounded something like home, for I often hear the German spoken in Wilkes-Barre, and it brought some of my friends to mind. I had all the next forenoon for a walk about th# town, of which I could see hardly anything in the evening, when I arrived. I suppose it is a good specimen of a German town of the ize. It is situated on • plain directly in among the mountains, some of which were very rugged and picturesque. I noticed the extreme civility of the people. The men recognizing me as a 6tranger would take oft their bats, and even the boys would do the same, which is more than I can say of some of m£ young friends in Wilkes-Barre. I have bad young and old take off their bats to me in Italy, but it was for a very different object It was the beggar's manners, and he expected to be paid for it. But I did not meet a single beggar in all my walks around this town which speaks well for it. Daylight at length come, and I enjoyed fuUlv the remainder of my ride. We were continually descending by a serpentine course, with fine glimpses of Alpine scenery—until six and seven o clock, *11 at once the view of the valley burst upon us—with Inngpuck in the midst of it, the end of our present road— the beginning of the railway. It was a beautiful scene. We reached Innspuck at 7, had ample time for breakfast, and then leaving my intelligent and pleasant Austrian companion, with whbm I exchange cards. I took the comfortable cars for Munich. The character of the scenery now immediately changed. We left the vicinity of the mountains, and passed over level land, through little villages and large towns, adorned with numerous churches with tall tapering spires painted, souie red, some green, and at 4 o'clock, arrived in this city, where, perhaps, you may soon hear from me again. With thanksgvings to a kind Providence for a safe and pleasant journoy, I close my present letter. Your friend and Pastor, Ufiouuis D. Milks. .
