Wore 10 •euliou. VOLUME XVI.—NO. 5. WHOLE NO. 837. Geo. W Brainerd & Co, P O K T R r. the inspection of iho custom bouse officer who looked into my baggage, but was quite civil and let me off very easily. I bad now set my foot upon the Kingdom of Italy, and came under the government of Victor Emmanuel. Genoa has been called "La Superba," or the superb city, on accounts of its many palaces. To-day I obtained the assistance of a guide who took mc 10 various places at interest among wbicb wore three or four of these old palaccs. Two of them are very fine. You enter a largo doorway and hall with 4 marble stairway and go to the top of the house. Here are large rooms, the walls of which are hung —some with damask or silk tapestry, and some with rare paintings of the old masters. Many of the floors are marble of a great variety of marbles curiously inUid and with their rich furniture of all kinds and adorned with sculpture and paintings. These buildings show us how the great men of Genoa have lived in former times, while much of the style is continued to the present day. The building in which I am now staying—used as a public bouse and called "Hotel D'ltalie," was formerly the residence of Cardinal Laurentious Raggius, whose mural monument is said to be in one of the rooms. (I have not seen it.) In the lower vestibule Stands the omnibus which goefe fo tho railway station (Strnda ftrritte as It is called in Italian) and at tho head of the first flight of Steps I saw, as I ascended, the statute of, Scfpio Afrit-arms. The window of my room looks out upon the sea. The floor is of marble ir. mosiac, and the concave ceiling is painted fn ftdacl. All 'the stalk-ways rtfe Rtonft and some of the floors are tiled. The dining room Is the same that must have been used fbr this purpose when the house was occupied by Hs first owners, and many a brilliant company has probably assembled there. My last day at Nice I occupied partly with a morning Walk, to see the Villa Arsttn, With Its terraced gardens and groves of orange tree#, bendfng beneath their abundant frutt, with its fine view of ihc town and the sea beyond. To day, Saturday, Jany. 6th, my last sight-seeing day in Gonoa, I hare been by railway a few miles to tho Villa Pallaricini, belonging to a marquis of that rttnie. I bad read of it in my guido book, and had been urged by an American frldtid not to Tail of seeing it. It is entered by obtaining a printed permit with your name inserted. Tho permit is gfven to.a'1 who apply, find then you haVe to give the attendant it fee for showing you through the grounds. I was amply repaid for going. ' Tfi'4' morning war! dull and rainy, and I feared that I should liavo to njrcnd my day in doors, which would have been somethings of a disappointment iri Aj' limited time. Hut the sun came out clear and warm, and the beautiful grounds of this Villa appeared to good advantage. They are upon a hillside, and have been planned with great skill. There were temples of all kinds, marble, iron and wood, classic and rustic, with statues, and ornamental work of dtfei-y sflrt. The most cnf-ious tiling ill thtf grounds was an artificial grotto or ciVe,which looked as though it might have been made to represent the fairy grottos of old, or the cave of Kentucky on a small scale. After walking in some little distance, We came to water, and a man in a boat paddled me into daylight, and brought me into new beautios. In various places the guld# showed me how he could give the visitors a gentle shower from jets of water; but he was kind enough to spare me the infliction ; and I returned to Genoa much delighted with my excursion. To-morrow will be 8unday, the first in the new year. It brings up pleasant recollections of the past For ho# many years I have met you oo your anniversary, and given out the prises to the highest merit This year It wjlt be donfc by anbthcr hand. I shall "be anxious to learn who arc the favorod ones, and shall hope to hear from your Superintendent now In few weeks. Another new year, if God spares my life, I hope to bo with you again. For the present I wish you all a happy new year. I have found out to-day where the English church is, and expect to worship there to-morrow. Oil Monday I think of leaving ; and you will bear of me from some other city of Italy, I eannot now toll you which. Tho Run, which has been shining brightly into my room, has just set, and I must close my letter. Truly your friend and Pastor, GeoBok D. The patronage oftho publicissolicited. Importer of Brandies, Wines, Gins, &c., &c., &c.f I visited another large church, far rnoro Deautiful—the Church of the Annunciation.— rh'fire was a great deal of painting and gilding jpon tho ceiling and sides of Uio building, ind the sculpture and mosaic work is very ■ich. As in most roman churches there are nany chapels and side altars, and I have been astonished at tho vast amount of labor expended. Almost tho entire interior is padc up of small pieces of various kinds anff colors of stone. Tho paintings on tbe walls and ceilings are scriptural designs. Some of these old churches are hung with tapestry, genurally of crimson silk «or worsted, and in •ome of tbe churches of Milan these hangings are set off with a rich fringe of gold. These strike a stranger very much in comparison with our plain churches. One thing, however I would like to soe introduced in our churches which is common here, viz: a thick, heavy curtain at the door, to keep out tho coltl as the door is opened. Ih fact I havo sometimes been through three doors and this curtain besides. The doors are made to swing easily so that there is no noise. Wc need such an arrangement rnoro in a cold climate like ours. These churches, however, are rarely heated. I have seen this custom of hanging tho doors with curftkins in Pay's, and I think also in England, and it gives an air of great comfort I have sometimes heard persons in Wilkes- Barre who have visited Boston make some rather unfavorable reflections upon tbe narrow and crooked streets of my native city. As I was walking about Oenoa, I thought I would liko them to see if there were not some place in the world vforso than Boston. I- never saw such streets. I did not dare to be out after dark for fear I should tosc tny way, and not be able to make inyself understood in finding my way b&ck to the hotel. Some of the Streets are so narrow that one can (ouch the walls each side by stretching out both arms. We should oall them lanes or alleys. The buildings are very high, so that the rooms must bo dark, and the street are steep. Soiue of thcra you have to ascond by steps. They do not know tho convenience of street cars, and it will be a long time before they arc in trodused. This city would be quite a contrast to those who are familiar with the straight lovel streets of Philadelphia. n 1®-* Nugent, ■•OIM'CW* f"e™"0®8 10 the citizens of Piltiton and fWirttty. There a very line road, but it takes the stage or "Diligence" as they call it hero—two days to travel it, wbilo families with a private carriage sometimes take, four days. I came In one day by Sca, on the steamboat "Espresso." And I was not sorry, for besides saving, time and mon:y, I had a flrto view of the mountains, and the entire coast from»Nice to Genoa, passing many towns and villages on the border of tbe Mediterranean and seeing mariy villageB and single houses on the hillsides. In the afternoon the sun came out a little, and the sriow covered Alps, and1 tfistifht Appenines glistened in hfs beams. Ifl these short days wo could not ac - complish the journey until after dark, but the lights,6f the crty were visible for # Ring distance. Tfic sight on entering the harbor is very fine. The city makes a semi circle, and rises like a amphitheater and when lighted up at night is very picturesque. There is a good deal of travel here and the masts of the vessels looked very thick as we entered in the dark. Tbe steamboat could not get to the pier and so wo had to land by mews of small liflats, which como swarming around, cach eager to SEWING MACHINES, • CEO. Of course, like European towns in general, their Sunday did not appear like ours. I met many people—in fact the streets \vere filled. The stores, however, were mostly closed, but the market places and comers of the streets wore held by persons selling vegetables and poultry. The brokers shops were also open, and occasionally I saw a peddler's stand. In all the throng of pceplo that day I saw but oftp drunken man, and this is more than could be said with many a city ,au4 town in Auicrisa. In the two or three hotels at which I have stoppod since entering Italy, I have not seen such a thing as a bar-room. All the people, however, aeoiu to drink the common wine of the country which is not intoxicating. It is placed upon the dining table as freely as water with no additional charge. I have seen much to remind of him to-day—a fine monument, surrounded by a statue on the pedestal of which are four has reliefs, indicating as many different circumstances in his life. The whole it of white marble and does honor to his native city. I also saw some manuscript letters preserved with great Care 111 glass covers, and bearing the date of 1525. These are kept in the City Hall, as wo would call it, formerly a royal palace. There is also a bust of Columbus iu the great room of this building where the official meetings are held. In short they are no bonnet at all, but only a kind of veil, fastened to tho hair by a pin and falling around the shoulders. This must be much less expensive than the apology for a bonnet as now worn at bom*. The effect was npt unpleasant. The dress otherwjjj was modest and uot at all showy. The city makes a semi circle, and rises like a amphitheater and when lighted up at night is very picturesque. There is a good deal of travel here and the masts of the vessels looked very thick as we entered in the dark.
