Perhaps I have already taken up too much time and space in describing the grand and beautiful sights, and not dwult enough in a reric# of letters lihe the present, upon tlwse things connected with our spiritual work, i devote this letter, tbtrafore, to church matters. Yoo already know that this country ia Roman Catholic in its religion, for the moat part.— There ia, however, free toleration for all.— While the Emperor Napoleon is, nominally, at least, a Roman Catholic, he is a wise and po litic sovereign, and knows that it is best to give freedom to a'l the churches. I lmCl not room in my last letter to speak of the Fair recently held for tho benefit of our American Episcopal church. When tho church was built, it was hoped that enough money had been collected to pay for; but owing to tho great difference in exchange, that is, the difference between our currency and tho price of gold, there was found to be a deficiency ; to make thin up, and pay oil the debt, in part at least, thia fair was projected. Donations in articles or in money were solicited, and responses were very liberal. Not only our Own American people, (and some who were not Episcopalians) but French ladies also assisted, and not the least encouraging thing about the effort, was the manifestation of good will, to an extent that had not been anticipated. This has often been the case, as we know, in oui own town at home, when fairs have been heM for various religious and benovoloiit objects: but I did not suppose that the people of a citj tike P*ri» would take wiough. interest jl| oui affairs to attend or contribute money.
