While the General was in command the post of Cairo, Bishop General Oeneral Pillow, and General Frank Ch am, of the rebel arm;, were at Columl Kentucky. Flags of truca were occas ally sent back and forth between the places, and the opposing generals w generally present. After the conclut of busiuess, it was frequently the case t wine would be brought and toasts dri at parting. On one occasion General F proposed a toast, which, he said, all co drink. Those present filled their glaa and he gave to "General George Washi ton." As he paused purposely, at end of the name, the company commen to drink, when he added, "the first reb General Grant had his glass nei finished, and it was no use to stop ; be exclaimed, "that was scarcely fair, p eral; but I will be even with you m day." The laugh was, of course, so what against him, but the party parte( good humor. Some two weeks aftcrws another flag of truce was sent down Columbus, General Grant accompany it. After business was over, the rebel p eral produced the wine as usual, and G eral Grant adroitly turned the conversat into State Rights, pn which subject Sot earners alwas loved to dilate—their riDD being the alleged object for which t claimed to be fighting. He allowed tb to prococd at considerable length, with attempting to refute anything; and th were, perhaps, flattering themselves w the idea that they were cqiiverting I from the error of his ways. At length arose to go, and proposed a toast at pi ing. Glasses were filled, and tho gent arose and gave, "Equal rights to all." then made a pause as General Polk ! done, and when all were hurriedly drit ing, he added, "white and black." 1 horror of the chivalry at being inveig into drinking such a heretical toast n be easily imagined, and they were rat! disposed to feel angy, until General Gr remarked, "Now, General Polk, I thin am even with you for that rebel toast 3 made me drink at our last conference.' Quick to see and appreciate a good jo the anger of the Southerners was turt into a laugh at the expense of their r erned general, who gracefully ackno edged himself flanked. The cheese was in a wagon which occupied a position on one end of the platform cars, and when a short distance cast of Napanee, this car, with several others, ran off the track arDd the mammoth cheese was turned over, and rolled with tremendous force down an embankment. The catastrophe had the effect ofcraoking it through and knooking out a few hundred pound chuoks; and it it further reported that skippers, the size of woodchucks, startled bj the shock, were seen to emerge from the spongy mass and1* make way qver the adjaoeut fields, but this story ig possibly an ecageration, —Genesee Farmer. JOHN FAREIRA'S " The mammoth cheese exhibited at the recent Provincial Fair at London, weighing 4,000 pounds, has met with a terrible disaster, and been irreparably damaged,— The owners designing to exhibit in Montreal, risked the intaluablo possession upon the Grar.d Trunk Railway—what elae could oould have expected ?
