PITTSTON, PA., THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1865. WHOLE NO. 807. VOLUME XV.--NO. 27 Lincoln Franklin Fire Insurance Company, For the Pittston Gazcttee. Addressed to one who exclaimed " I have not a friend in the world. lion at St. Domingo when the blacks aroso upon the whites and burnt and mossacrcd with the fury of wild beasts, intoxicated at the sight and sound of tl*Q ruin and death they were making. We have no motives tp crcate useloss alarm, but the gales that sweep from the South are burdened ifrith the cries of murder and woe, and naturally do the excite iu us apprehensions of Social War. Afflicted with mental rheumatism and gout, these planters still hug thfl loathsome carcass of Slavery, whose bony fingers have ever pointed in derision and scorn at everything that is true and beautiful, hallowed and prosperous, in our Union. The average is an hundred negroes butchered every day ! Murderous, treason 1 Outlaws, inhuman monsters! ' Where can language be found to portray your crimes? What ago lias aver furnished such men ? Tell us not that Slavery is not the direct cause of this hardness of heart, this infamous pollution tff soul, this degredation of society, this utter robbery of all that is just and honorable ! this aacriligious avarice that cannot be satiated in blood and murder! We hoard the remark not long since, "the Devil wouldn't have Wirta, the Andorsonvillo jailofc, for Wirtz, would starve the Devil to death !" and so the will not admit theso men of the South into his apartments as he will be waylaid. The/began the "Rebellion tj support Slavery, fiat they have failed In butif iheso projects. The Government they sought to establish, with bloody hands and vilest of motives,.has proven the "baseless fabric of a vision." Mud with rage and disappointment they now seek to vent their spleen upon the blacks. They cannot tolerate the idea that those who were recently their goods and chattel#, should new be their compeers before the law, enjoying the same privileges and protection that proceed from that law. They can no longer drive slaves with the stiirg of'iseorpions to unrequited toil.. They cannot compel them to labor without compensation, and build mansions by the sweat snd sinews of the blacks, and so they turn thorn off to starve or murder thntn outright. The negroes cannot bo kept down as formerly. Abject servility is obsolete—one of tho relios of former barbarism. Freedom and pay are the order of the day. They know they aro lfgnHy frco. As the Vestal Virgins watched thn Roman fires, so by tho altars of our common country have been standing their invisablc spirits, bending over, with scrupulous vigilance and fidelity, the fires of Liberty that theuuhallowed hands of traitors sought to quench. All wars and their causes pale into insignificanec when brought iu contrast with our Great Civil War. Ce»sar,*Aloxander, Pyrrhus and Hannibal did not battle for the claims of humanity. They won their fields to satiate the claims of unlawful and sullish ambition, to satiate their lust for power and pagentry. They rode to glory upon the warm blood of the cohorts that followed them, and their pyramids upon which they stood wore built of bones and skulls. Their namos are written io blood and the memory of their pagentry and trophies, wrested by the stained and olutching hand of war, is going down into tho avaricious tomb of ambition. Merit has not stamped their deeds with immortality. Hut while we can rejoice at the overthrow of rebellion, that the ravages of civil strife arc closed, yet we should not bccome oblivious to the social conditiou of the South. It is a melancholy truth, and much to bo deplored, that murder is rife there; that the planter manifests his wicked disloyalty to the inexorable and legitimate results of the war uad bis own wrong-doing by perpetrating the foul ©rime of murder. Wen he formerly lashed at the whipping post aud tore away from the bosom of their families for filthy lucre, ho now kills outright. lie says "I wilt enrioh my acrea with tho dead carcases of my niggars." Horrid expression 1 Nero, fiddling with unction in the glare of tho crackling ruins of llome, her towers and temples and colonades bathed in tire, persecuting tho inoffensive and defenceless Christians with pitch and fugot, oharging tho desolation upon them, was but little worse. "Whom tho Gods would destroy tho first make Where is that boasted "chivalry," that supremacy of birth and uobility ? If they consist in plundering the Treasury at Washington, in inaugurating Civil War, in endeavoring to demolish the fairest fabric of government upon earth, in being vile traitors, in starving to death gallant Union soldiers by the thousands, in murdering the President, and now butchering by wholesale their former slaves they dare not whip, set free by the natural uud inevitable results of their own madness and folly, then we say they have all claims to chivalry and nobility. Then we say they are the embodiment of chivalry and quintessenco, boiled down, of nobility I Th« undersigned would an nounce to the public that they have opened A* EXTOSIVH BAKEBY IS PITTSTON adjoining tlw Butler House, whero they will be Mrensred at nil times to supply families.mid parties with Bread Biscuit, Cakes and Pies.ot all ki.d, »u short notice.
