The day was very hot, and the road seemed very lonely and long. Jast before plunging into the woods, I passed, over a piece of land which some hunter's fire had burned over. Nothing-was here and there a tall stomp of a tree, blackened by the fire and entirely dead, and now and then a great rock which bad its covering all burned off, and it was left to be bleached in the sun, and to be pelted by the storms. Under the shadow of one of these huge rocks I sat down to rest. Every bird was still, and every leaf hung motionless on the trees, and the only sound to be heard was the murmur of a distant waterfall far away in the forest. The first m Aim you should follow is never to attempt to control your husband by opposition, by displeasure, or any other mark of anger. A man of sense of prudence, of warm feelings, cannot, ami will not, bear an opposition of any kind, which is attended with an angry look or expression. The current.of his aflfeclion is suddenly Btoppcd; his attachment is suddenly weakened ; he begins to feel a mortification the most pungent; ho is belittled even in his own eyes, and be assured, tho wife who once excites those sentiments in the breast of tho husband, will never regain the high ground which she might and ought to have retained. When he fiiarries her, if he is a good man, he expects to find in her one who is not to (Mntrol him—not to tako from him the freedom of acting as his own judgment shall direct, but one who will place such confidence in him, as to believe tbat his prudence is his best guide. Little things, what aro in reality mere trifles in themselves, often produce bickerings and even quarrels.— Never permit them to be a subject of disputo, yield them with pleasure, add with a smile of affection. Be assured that one difference outweighs them all a thousand or ten thousand times. A difference with your husband ought to be considered as the greatest calamity—as one that is to be studiously guarded against; it is a demon which must never be permitted to enter a habitation whore all should be peace, unimpaired confidence and heartfelt affection. Besides,'what can a woman gain by opposition or indifference ? Nothing. But she loses everything ; she loses her husband's respect for "her virtues ; she loses his love, and with that, all prospects of future happiness. She creates lier own misery,«nd then utters idle and silly complaints Imt utters them in vain. The love of a husband can be retained only by tho high opinion which he entertains of his wife's goodness of heart, of her amiable disposition, of the sweetness of her temper, of her prudence,of her devotion to him. Let nothing, upon any occasion, over lessen that opinion. On the contrary it should augment every day ; he should have much more reason to admire her for those excellent qualities which will east a lustre over a virtuous woman when her personal attractions 0 C T O R ROBATHAN, [ Sccckssor to E. A TRUE STORY. And as the sand was diy, and the hunter was still—buried in the sand, I had a specimen of hisskill and power. A little red ant came running along, seeking food for herself and ber young. So she climbed np on the rim of this sandy eup, and peeped over to see if she could see anything. Presently she seemed to suspect danger, and tried to scrabble off. Alas! it was too late : the sands rolled her under her feet, and down she went to the bottpm ; when in an instant that little black horn opened like a pair of shears, and 'clip,' and the poor ant had one leg cut off! Now she saw her danger, and struggled to mount op the sides. The lion did not move or show himself. lie knew what he was about. And now the poor thing struggles to climb up: but one leg is gone, and she finds it hard work. But she has got almost to the top and almost out, when the sands slip, and down she rolls again to the bottom. 'Clip' go the shears, and a second leg is gone. You have, therefore, in your power, all the essestial ingredients of domestic happiness; it cannot be marred, if you now reflect upon that system of conduct which you ought invariably to pursue ; if you now see clearly the path from which you will resolve never .to deviate. Our conduct is often the result of whim or caprice, often sueh as will give us many a pang, unless we see, beforehand, which is always most praiseworthy, and the most essential tb happiness.
