From the New York Evening Express. and imparted to it, bj the introduction of a peculiar oonf'pound, sufficient to render it an excellent lubricant for eithe'r heavy or light1 machinery, and suitable for all season* and climates. For this process, tbe inventor had taken patents in the United States, England and Canada.— Practical engineers and railroad men, whose past experience led them to' entertain.the strongest prejudice against petroleum, and who at first scouted the idea of employing anything of which it was the basis on the railways under their control, have assured us that the new lubricator is unobjectionable. . , We have seen it subjected to a temperature below freezing point, without its limpidity being affeated, and to great heat without losing jts coating properties. Its difiusion and searching qualities appear to us to be superior to those of any other oil with tvhltfh we are acquainted. ly on our own personal observation and partly on the testimony of men far mora competent than we are to judge of tbe vain* of the artiele. We believe that it haa no soperior among tbe purest fish oils, and hO equal among the animal and vegetable ones, and if this opinion be oorrect, its eoonomio recommendations must necessarily brio* it into universal nse on railroads, in factories, and wherever- motive power is employed. In fact, it is impossible to assign any limita to the consumption of such a cheap and important means of increasing tbe efficiency of all kinds of machinery. CITY ADVBETI8BBOTTS. Geo. Formerly whalipg Toyages occupied from two to two and a half years; now their aVerage length is between four and five years, and as 'all fish oils become gummy and sour by ago, thereby losing their lubricating qualities, and acquiring a corrosive property, whioh readers them injurious to metals, it is obvious that most of the sperm oil now in use must be decidedly inferibr to the fresher pro' duct'of shorter voyages. April 2,18«3.—It - As regards the important item of cost, Hendriclc's Lubricator has a vast advantage of er other machinery oils. It is manufactured of different .qualities, each expressly adapted to the purpose it is intended to subserve, but they are all cheap in comparison with the oils in ordinary use. These tacts are #eH known to all experienced engineers, mill-owners, and failroad superintendents, and when we remember that the p9or article of sperm at present in use is sold at double the price charged for fresher and bettec'oil five or six years it is not wonderful, that otfr Railroad Companies and Manufactnrers should long hare been anxiously looking for somo efficient lubricant that could ' be afforded at a more moderate rate. Lard oil has been tried, and perhaps more nearly approximates sperm, as an ahti-frictional agent than any other. But it has two serious drawbacks. It loses its fluidity at the temperature of- 45, or thereabouts, and in very warm weather becomes so thin as to ftn off from the surfaces to which it is applied. Some time ago cheapness was, however, a great point in its favor; but now, in consequence of the increased ooet of feed, tt is nearly as expensive as ordinary sperm oil. oreign and American Dry Goods, No. 47 North 3d St., Phllad'a. We bavo conversed, at different times vitb several railroad managers who have horougbly tested Hendrick's Lubricator Dn the great freight roads of the interior, incf they all testified verbdlfy, find have lince testified in writing over their own lignatures that the article is entirely free from such abjections. A short time ago we were informed thai the Hendriok patent had been purchased by a company consisting of a few wealth} capitalists, and haw since learned some ;hing of thei r plans and designs The Com pany has been incorporated under the lawi Df the State of New York, by the style anc .itloofthe "Jpreat Northern Oil Company,' with a bona fiJc capital of two millions o lollars. None of tne stock is for sale, the members of the incorporation having su4f mbounded confidence* in the artiole, thai :hey prefer to keep all the shares in theii )wn hands. They are now manufacturinf largely, and have purchased tracts in vari jus sections where the kind of petroleun required bas been fonad, and are sinking wells and erecting factories with a view u ;hff production of the Lubricator in sufficient quantities to supply the rapidly increasing Iernand. It seems that all ooal oil is noi idapted to the purpose* and great diserimi lotion hss to be exorcised in selecting the srude basis. Mr. John B. jSmith, manage) Df the Pennsylvania Coal Co., on whose ail road s the Lubricator is now exclusively ued, states that he bas iully tested it« wearjig properlit* as compared with those of the jest fish and animal oils, and that he pre ;ers it to" qny of them. The result was that when the latter had become dry and heated, the forner were still thoroughly lubricated. He jstimates that the saving effected by usiag Hendrick's preparation is equal to abotii two-thirds of its cost. It is believed tbal the inorease of motive power obtained by its adoption will enable railroad cawpaniei to add more than ten per cent, to the nun ber of ears which is now considered the compliment of a locomotive. TO A*D rnOM GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND While the manufacturing and transportation interests were still easting about for a new lubricator, adapted to their purposes, petroleum was discovered in large quantities, in Pennsylvania, Western Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Western New York', Canada and subsequently in California. It had been some years as Seneca oil, in certain districts whero the Indians procured a small supply of it from the upper strata of the soil; but when its subterranean springs Were tapped by means of deep wells, it suddenly became a grand staple of commerco. Of course, it immediately attracted the attention of the whole scientific and Manufacturing world. The much desired cheap lubricant had, it was thought, been found.- Three or four years ago petroleum was in use on some of the .Pennsylvania railroads, under the name of Mecca or Rock oil, and we were then informed by prominentlailroad men. that it was likely to supersede all the fish, animal and vegetable oib as a lubricator for locomotives, and all kinds of machinery. But this expectation was aoon dissipated. The petroleum obtained from the depths of the earth proved to be an inferior article to the surface oil. It contained a large amount of grit, which turned out on analysis to be rotten stone, was charged with acid, apd mixed mort or loss with water. Of course the mechanical effect of the grit was to grind away the machinery on which it was used, while the solvent action of the powerful mineral acid aided the work of destruction. The priooof . the artiolo was low enough, it ifftrue, but the difference of coqt between the petroleum and the fish and abimal oils, was found to be a very small matter as compered with the loos involved in the increased wear and tear of rolling gear and operative machinery.— Petroleum under these circumstances was soon abandoned as a lubricator. HARRINGTON WRIGHT & HARRINGTON, ATTORNEYS AT LAW, AVIXJ RK8-BA K, PA, $85,413 38 The country is now, and bas been for ome time past, literally flooded with mixid oily called lubricators. Ho mentions tbat )/ way of experiment, he opplied it to the wheels or side of a car, and fish oil oC ipproved quality to" the wheels on 'the op. posite side. The modus operandi is this: Let the driver have tlfe entire change of her, and take pains, by gentle usag« and kindnes, to be on good ternw with her. When she is to be driven, let him harness her himself, talking to and patting her daring the process. When all is ready, go to tier head and stand, without boldiug her, if possible, till everything is in the boggy but yourself. Now, boldwg the lines, step baok i pace or two.
