THOUGHTS. came to a point where there was not anything to look after, but the cultivation of the garden. I was not long in making the discovery that I had no gen ins or taste cither for digging srOund roots or palling and as uiy wife didn't wish the garden to run to warfta» I employed a regular gardener to carry the thing handsomely through, " Well,,! (Jiifn 6 mind the expense ' he pttt rire Win 'way of guano, new-fangled garden tools artd patent watering apparatus lor I hadv fully expected to spend .flwjney—and thanks to,oar previous economy, we had the money to spend—but Aleck, it was realty amusing to see what the fruit and vegetables raised in our garden stood us. Making use of the little arithmetic I was master of, I recollect that I cyphered up the cost of some of the table fixings, and the result was—cucumbers, soventeen cents a piece, green peas, a dollar and three-quarters for a half-peck, beets fourtewn cents each, and everything else in proportion. All ,tki* I cared nothing about, but somehow I felt out of my gearing in not having the right kind of employment. Wife did her best to co*x me into gentlemanly ways—had all the old meohnnioal grime scrubbed out 6f my bands —finger-nails oUaped out and sounded, so as to appear that I had never done manual labor. " Thfen we must get behind a couple of Morgan ponies which 1 had purchased, and malts fashionable calls in the day-time, on those who had oalled on us; and my wife wanted me to soflten down my voice, and be particular about my-grammar and the Btibjects I talked oa; but sometimes for •getting myself, I would revel in the prouc memory of the locks and keys I, had han died in.my happier days, and commence a history of my exploits itD that line, whet wife would look as though she was goinC to sink through the floor. In fact, shC wanted to keep a perpetual look on mD lips, with the key jn her pocket. But' sighed for the shop, and time hung si heavily on my hands that an hour spent ii stupid listlessncss about the house soemei longer to me than a day did when I hai orders ahead for locks, and was drivin; hands to get them finished at a set timC My youngest brother, who is a collegi or' ' ' ~ * * one of them entertained me with aom* «mmm oa a parlor organ, the worthy smith begged me to exouae him for a few momenta, after whioh be reappeared in perfectly clean linen and a suit of dainty black. We sapped at a table with th* utmost profusion, and in the evening, some company coming in, conversation and music filled the passing hour. I was deeply impressed, and concludod that my wiwi cousin, the locksmith and bellhanger, was a wise man, and unwittingly he had found the true philosopher's stone. Daily work was as necessary to him as his daily bread, and the toil of his shop only served to enhance the pleasant reoreatioos of a refined and happy home. On takiag my leave, I realized UR* I had been taught a valuable lesson. Employment is the healthful lot of life, ana be that would seek happiness in a state of perpetual repose, betrays a profound ignorance of the benifioent laws whioh govern his being. GEO. W. The most melancholy event we hare ever been called upon to record ocenrnd yesterday afternoon, about twelve miles from this city, on the road leading from this place to Bridgeport. Mr. Alexander Glen had just purchased a team of four fine horses ana a thorough brace wagon, with the purpose of running the establishment to Sacramento with passengers and returning with fruit for this market Not being ready to start the team till next Monday, he concluded to take his family, consisting of his wife and three ohildren, to Bridgeport on a pleasure excanion of two or three days, mainly for Mrs. Glen's health, which had not been good for a length of time, though somewhat improved. The party consisted of Alexander Glen, his wife and three children,' Mr. Glen's father, Mr. Medloy and wife and Mr. George Weston. The morning was clear and beautiful and about 11 o'olock all left in buoyant spirits, anticipating a pleasant trip. About 2 o'clock they stopped to lunch some 12 miles from this place —then resumed their journey, expeotiag to greet a pleasant party of friends about § p. m., at the Weaver House in Bridgeport, little dreaming of what awaited them. But in the providence of God the instruments of death were prepared and awaiting the precisc moment for the Divine behaat. The clouds bad gathered, and hung in awful grandeur upon the mountain brow. One oi those phenomena known as waterspouts had formed at the head of a canon through which the load passed. As ths party were ascending the gorge, the team galloping at full speed, the cload bust, precipitating a volume of watar fifteen feet deep, sweeping away almost instantly the team, drowning Mrs. Glen and her children, and Mrs. Medly. Mr. Glen and his father were terribly bruised, and eseapad death very narrowly. Mr. Medly and Mr. Weston were little injnred, but their ascape was almost miraculous. Bethlehem, 10.00 A. THOUGHTS. came to a point where there was not anything to look after, but the cultivation of the garden.
