About a week after the meeting of Edgar with the trapper, the latter' made his appearance at the hotel of onr hero, and announced himself as ready for the Start. The two friends, so unlike in everything, after a tedious journey across prairies, through thiek aad almost impenetrable forests, aad over wide aod swift-running rivers,: arrived safe at their destination, and at onoo set about building themselves a small house.. This was easily accomplished, and a neat and strongly constructed cabin soon marked the spot which but a short time previous was cohered with tall and massive ley of epithets npon his captors whioh were anything but complimentary. The Indiana were now grouped together consulting in regard to the prisoner's fate. Some were for immediate death, others for keeping him a prisoner until they should arrive at their enoarapment, where they could dispose of him at their leisure ; the majority decided that he should be allowed to run the gauntlet, and if he escaped unharmed, he was to go free. In this case as in all others, the majority ruled, and preparations were at once made. The chief informed the captive of the proposed arrangement. . . " AH right," said Bill coolly walking S. SOMER8, Edgar Laundon Was a young man of twenty-three, tall and slim in stature, and with • mild and remarkable pleasing face. He was one to make true friends wherever he may choose to go. He was possessed of an abundance of this world's goods, left him by an aged and much loved father, who had departed this life some three years previous to the opening of our story. Edgar was rather sickly, his health having been very feeble for a lengthy period of time, and, by the advicc of an experienced physician, he resolved on a journey to the far West. With this intention he, one fine day, set out, and after a pleasant and invigorating journey, arrived at St. Louis. Here he remained several days, spending tho time in visiting the many placcs of interest in that beautiful oity, and waiting in meeting with some trapper whom he wished^to accompany to the hunting ground. The wished for meeting soon arrived, for one morning as he was sauntering slowly along through the principal streets, admiring the many beautiful wCrks of both man and nature which met his gase on all sides*, he unconsciously ran against a fellow pedestrian , Dealer in This done, he again took aight at aoothr er of the besiegers, and discharged the contents of his gun towards him. The Indian gave a yell of mingled jDain and rage, and leaping high into the air, fell to the ground a corpse. Creeping carefully forward he boob found that it waa the oamping ground of the Indians, and they were now engaged in preparing their supper. He cautiously watched them for several hours, until everything was still, and the single sentinel's head dropped upon his breast. Our hero made a loud noise, sufficiently loud, however, to rouse the sleepy watcher, who started up and gazed around. Hearing nothing more to arouse his suspicions the Indian settled back into his seat, no doubt thinking it some wild animal.— As he sat down Ldgar repeated the noise, this time much louder than before. The Indian again sprang to his feet, now thoroughly aroused, and cautiously advanoed towards the spot from which the noise proceeded.PETER- LOBILLABD, Snuff and Tobacco Manufacturer, When the blows of million hammers Shall clank on native ore, And the unnumbered fires of furnaces Their iron rivers pour; When palaces shall tower aloft As fair as classic piles, Which in the palmy days of Borne, Adorned her streets for miles. Edgar quiokly cut the thong with which the Indiana had bound him, and they hurriedly, yet cautiously, left the spot. They wended their way towards a small settlement, which they reaohed on the eve of the next day. From this plaoe Edgar soon made his way to St. Louis, and from thenoe to his home, where he arrived in safety, his health muoh improved as also his appearance. At the fast aooounts a little blushing blue-eyed maiden had promised to become his wife, and report says they are to be nlarried in a raw short weeks.
