I nosed a.few moments, and then inquired in what and how, *oon I Wfta to be senb to my destination. '• You will be replied the colonel, " for wy orders in this respect are jositiM, and within an hour, or at the la,tost two, will bo sent off lender the guard ,ot two men, who will escort you to the failroad station on foot, and thence to the nmi'oia odw Oc'jiIj cu.jil 'ib !iCiy *t fir.il i 1 with a feeling of joyful relief, I saw that the last drop bad been drained. The effect was not immediate upon my guard ; but In a short time I noticed they bog* 11 to walk heavily,- and then unsteadi' ly, and both of them mattered something j about feeling awful sleepy. I imitated their motions with every sense alive, and my heart beating quick with hope. W» continued on in this manner some Httl« distance, and had began to ascend the opposite hill, at a spot where the bushes grew thick on each side of the path, when both cAme to a halt, looked with drnnken gravity into each other's faces for a few moments, and then quietly sat down, and almost instantly fell over, in a state of u«v« consciousness. Jfow was my time, and gathering all my strength, I gave my irons a tremendous wrench. As they suddenly snapped asunder and left me free, I could soarcely restrain a loud cry of joy. To drag the two men into the bushes, out of sight of any chance passers, was only the work of a miniite. As I still Wore the bntternut elothes which the.guerillas had forced upon me in exahango for my own, there was no need of further change of dress to pass for a Confederate soldier ; and securing a musket and plenty of ammunition, I struck off through the bushes to the right, and hurried away over a wild country as fast as fear and hope could drive me. Keeping to the fields and woods, avoiding all highways, settlements, and even dwellings, I pushed on in a westerly directum all day, fortunately without meeting a person!' Just at dark I came to a lonely cabin, and sadly feeling the need of food I ventured to knock'at the door. " Who's thar ?" inquired a timid voice. " A hungry soldier who has lost his way, give me something to eat, and I will go on." A pale, sickly looking white, woman came to the door, and assured me she had nothing to eat, except somo hard corn bread, and gave me a piece about the size of my fist. CEO. W. BRAINERO A Cfc. In the course of five miles, I passed several comfortable dwellings, bat I was afraid to stop and ask for food. At last I discovered a mean shanty, standing a little off from the road, and I resolved to try my luck there. As I got over the fence a little dog ran up to me, barking savagely, and attempted to bite my heels. I watched my chance and knocked him over with the breech of my inusket which I carried. As he lay quivering on the ground", it occurred to me that I could cat him ; and killing him at onoe, I picked him up and went back into the road, and continued on until I came to a wood, into which I penetrated for half a mile, and there I struck a fire, and cooked the animal, which I" devoured with a gusto I've since wanted for much better meat.— I then went some distance from the fire, lay down and went to.sleep. I also slept some the next day, keeping myself concealed in the woods, and the next night I went back to the road and pushed on as before. Thus I continued to work my way northward for several days, till, at last I was challenged by a sentry in blue, when I almost fainted for joy at finding myself within the Federal lines. TXn J. M. Our horses were led away from as, and our arms taken possession of; and then the whole party of rebels crowded around us in 9 tumultuous manner, cursing and threatening us with massacre. " We have a right to expect the common usage of war !" I said, lo the leader, a savage and brutal looking fellow. " And you'll get what we choose to give you, for we're your masters now," he savagely rejoined. " If we choose to bang, we will begin with you first. With this ho walked away a few paces, and held a consultation with some of his inferior officers, while we awaited the result with feelings that were far from pleasant. The secotid day, like the first, I managed to get over a long stretch of country without being discovered, gradually shaping my course to the north. That night I spent in the woods, sleeping in some bushes. The next morning on resuming my journey, I espied several Rebel soldiers, moying. about in different directions, and fearing that they were hunting for me, I did not venture from the wood all day.— Sirfec leaving the Rebel camp I had eaten nothing but the corn cake given mo by the poor woman, and began to feel the pangs of hunger very keenly. *84,mi ar T% 8. TXn J. M. Resistance would havo been more than folly, as I saw at s glance, and I at once ordored the men to throw down their arma and dismount, which tbey did. The majority being in favor of delivering us to the commandant of the fort below, wo were sent off under a strong guard.
