So there is a fair prospect of the whole, after some delay and indescribable suffering, finding a hou»e among those, who, though strangers, profess the same religious belief, and worship with their faces towards Mecca. The disaster which has thus plunged an entire nation into pauperism, with its concomitants of famine and disease, is fearfully aggravated by the suddenness and completeness of the overthrow. On the Guinea const is the Bight of Benin, where the river Ojpu empties, formerly a chief reudezvous ot slave tniders; and ninety mile& inland, finely situated on the river, is the important city of Abbbokuta, which contains a population variously estimated at from 100,000 to 200,000 souls. Intelligence just received is to the efiectthat tho city was recently attacked bv tho King of Dahomey, nt the head of 10,000 troops, tnalo aud female, and that the latter were repulsed with terrible slaughter. The history of the city and'its inhabitants is extraordinary. When it was visited in the year 1849, by Itcv Mr. liomen, of the Baptist mission from America, the population was supposed to bo not fur from 100,000, originally made up of refugees from about one hundred towns destroyed by war. It. was founded about fifty years ago, and called Abbcli ii-kuta (" Understoric"), from the fact that atArst a few persons took shelter on the shelving sides of the granite ro'eks on which it is situated. The length of the city, as measured by Mr. Bowun, was within a few rods of four mites, and the width from two to .three miles, the whole inclosed by a strong wall, beyond which were furms extending in every direction for a long distance. The origin of the wars is ascribed to the petty jealousies and intrigues of independent Kgba towns, of which surrounding tribes took advantage to sccure slaves fbr Cuba and Braxil, or slave markets beyond the Niger. It was through some of these, who had been recaptured and sont to Sierra Leone, and afterwards returned to their countrymen, that the Wcslcyan. missionaries wore invited to settle at Abbeokuta, where much success attended their efforts ,und those of the Episcopal mission. As would bo natural among the savage and semi-barbarous tribes of the western coast, the rising greatness of Abbtfokuta excited both the envy and cupidity of their old enemies, who resolved upon destroying the cUy. Several formidable assaults were made, all of which were successfully repelled,'and of late years the people have carried on a prosperous traffic with the coast. At ouc tirno they also enjoyed the friendship of the King of Dahomey, but in the year 1842 the latter treacherously turned on thetn in battle, and was drivsn off in icnomiuiom defeat, with the loss of his royal chi}ir. According to acoounts just received, this king (who is boasted of as a subscriber to tho London Times ) has re netrcd his enmity, and again boon vanquished, losing 3,000 warriors killed or prisoners. April 2, 1S63.—ly An Indiana soldier was struck in the breast at Chickamauga and fell. The bullet's errand was about done when it reached him ; it pierced coat and underclothing, and there was force enough left in it to wound if not to kill him; it had to work its way through a precious package of nine letters, indited by one dear heart and traced by one dear hand; that done, the bullet's power expended, there it lay asleep against the soldier's breast 1 Have you been making such a shield, dear lady, for anybody 1 Take care that it lack one letter of being bullet-proof.— Cor, Chicago Journal. For twenty-five or tbirty years the noble Circassian race, inhabiting the mountainous region extending along the northeast const of the-l)luck Sea, has maintained an unequal strife with the whole power of (he Russian Empire; but at last a letter from Constantinople informs us of the capitulation of Vardar, their last stronghold, and that the entire population is seeking an asylum in Turkey. Here is a people which, like Poland, is stRcken from 41m list of nationalities, and the Hussfun Czar is the instrument by whioh the work is accomplished. In this connection a brief retrospect of the history ot the Circassians may be timely. A Russian estimate a few years ago gave the total population as about -100,000; but as nearly as can be judged from the number of refugees now claiming the protection of a friendly government, something like 100,000 must have sinec pCTished in the desperate encounters which have crimsoned every valley of their mountain land, Being warriors frpuD choice, and agriculturists only from necessity, and always evincing a passionate attachment to their native Tocks, the Russians have retired before them in many a contcst. Tho struggle to efie'ct their reduction has been unceasing fcince the year 1800, when GCiorD'ia was annexed to tho dominions of the t'zur; but it was not till 1823, when a chieftcn named Kasi Molat, aided by the youthful Shamyl, organized a formidable resistance. At the end of ten years Kasi was slain at Himri, whioh was taken by 1 storm after every one of its defenders bad i • perished. The brave Shamyl was clcc.ted | his sueccsssor, and continued the conflict with xarying fortuircs He was one of tho ' most remarkable men that tho world has produced. Uniting in himself the charac-' ters of a warrior and a priest, he command- j ed the veneration, while he wielded tho passions of his- people. They loved, revered, and obeyed him implicitly, llis loss was their death blow, si Me from the day of his oapture dates the downfull to final subjugation. Sbamyl, with his family, oocupiou a palace in Russia, still under military survoillance, but enjoying the prerogatives of a noble captive. Tho scenCs attending the arrival bf tho Circassian refugees on the shores of the j Euxine, destitute and famishing, ar3 do- i scribed as exceedingly painful; and not C less harrowing is the desperate frenzy with wbinh they crowd the few transports sent to their rcsoue—-choosing to risk a direful pestilence on shipboard, rather than remain longer with the hated oppressor. It is mentioned that out of 600 who took passago on u steamer, after a voyage of three days onfy 370 arrived at their destination. In Trebissonde alone 27,000 of these wretched people hate already sought a shelter, and these are but the vahguurd of 300,000 seeking transportation to the Turkish coast. So great is the demand for vessels that the Sultan contemplates- diaaiming some of the men-ot-war, for employment in this service. A Correspondent of the London Times at Constantinople, j says':' 4 " I do not wish to excite unnecessary . horTOr lDy a faithful description of the awful visitation which has fallen upon the , Circassian race; indeed, no description, | however minute and accurato, could convey a sen.so of the fearful sufferings of this now proscribed people; but I should be failing in jubltc duty if I did not put upon record I he dreadful calamity of which 1 have such abundant evidence: I have been appealed to, moreover, from every quarter, to give publicity to this awfbl state of things ds a nicans of concentrating attention on a subject the present ami future importance of which is great, and in tho hope, also, that it may elicit some manifestation of pjglie syrnpa, Turkish Government is doing all in i its power to meet the pressing exigency, j The Sultan has given from his private I puree tho munificent sum 6f $250,000. BY THC It is related, in tho description of the fight, that tho King of Dnhomey marched in person, on the 15th of 'March, at tho head of ten thousand troops (male and female), and on the 16th attacked the Egba3 in their fortified town of Abbeokuta—a place of two hundred thousand inhabitants. Thy King had three brass fidld six' pounder pidce9, bearing the inscription upon tho breeoh of " Mexico, 1315." He advanced till within fifty yards of the wall of Abbeokuta, then suddenly displayed his flags, extended his lines, and marched rapiuly towards the wall. The Egbas immediately opened a tremendous lire on the lines, and arrested them at once. In the advancing columns were Amazons, who fought bravely and desperately. Many of thoso furies climbed the wall, which is more than fifteen feet high ; but, so soon as they reached the top, the Egbas dragged them over and slew tliem. One Amazon, who had one of her hands out off in her efforts to clumber over tho wall, her mupkpt with the other hand and shot an Egba. She received a sdrere blow from a satiYe, and fell backwards into the trench. The Dahomians were utterly defeated. Thoy lost upwards of one thousand in killed, and the number of prisonors is said to excced two thousand! The DahomTans tied in two divisions. In front of tho division which took firgt to flight was the doughty king himself. The Egbas pursued both divisions and slaughtered the fugitives without mercy and without a pause. Seeing the discomfiture of the King, the inhabitants of the neighboring erooms turned out and joined heartily in the general massacre. Of hia three Utild-picees, the kiug had the misfortune to leave two iu the keeping of the Egbas. 1st A limb being cut off before the growing season, both Wood and bark will dry and die lack where tho cut is madti. PitUtoa, July 3, 188J.-ly-* Atlantic Royal Mail Steam Navigation Co. "G-AIiWAY XsXNS." BY THC It is related, in tho description of the fight, that tho King of Dnhomey marched in person, on the 15th of 'March, at tho head of ten thousand troops (male and female), and on the 16th attacked the Egba3 in their fortified town of Abbeokuta—a place of two hundred thousand inhabitants.
