ClT?* ADVI5KTI8EMFNTS. Stofk Company, Incorporated 1812, INSURANCE. My Beau that's in the Army. I said to myself; "I'll starve him into it, or he shall die under the operation." After supper I went to the hatchway • and called out to him but he returned mo Ino answer. At eight o'elock I called ; again, and again got no answer. I might J havo thought that the flogging had taken away his senses, had not some of the men assured ino that they heafd him, not an hour before, talking to himself. I did not trouble him again until morning. After breakfast I wont to the ha'chway and callj cd to him onco more, t heard nothing I from him, nor could 1 sfee him—I had not ! seen him since I put him down there. ' called out several times, but he would make no reply, and yet the same men told me they had heard him talking that very j morning. lie seemed to bo calling on them for help, but he would not ask for me. " I mean to break him into it. He'll beg before he'll starve," I thought; and so determined to let bim stay there, I supposed that he had crawled forward to the forecastle bulkhead, in order to mukc the sailors heaf him. Some of the men asked leave to go down for him, but I refused, and threatened to punish any wan that dared to go- down. At noon I went again, and as lie did not tinswer me this time. I resolved that he should conic to the hatchway and ask for ! me, ere I went again. The day passed away, and when evening come again, I gan to be startled. I thought of the many good qualities the boy had, and of the widowed mother. lie had been in the hold thirty-si* hours, and all of forty hours without food of drink- He must be too Weak to cry out now. It was hard for me to give Up, but if ho died there from actual starvation it might go hard with mu still. So at length I made up my mind to go and see him. It was not quite sundown when i I had the hatch" tnken off, and I Jumped I down on the boxes alone. A little way ! forward I Sitfc space where jack might ea-1 sily havCC gone down, and to this point I crawled on my hands and knees. I called out there, but could get no answer. A short distanco further was a wido space, which 1 had entirely forgotten, but which I now remembered had been left open, on account of a break in the flooring of the hold, which would let anything that might have been stored there rest directly upon th# thin planking of the ship. To this place I made my way, and looked down, I heard the splashing of Water, and thought I could detect a sound" Tike" the incoming of a tiny jet, or stream. At first I could see nothing; but as soon as [ became Used to the dim light, I could distinguish the faint outlines of the boy some distance below me. He seemed to be sitting on the broken floor, with his feet stretched out against a cask. I called ont to him and thought he looked ufi—"Jack, are you there ?" , it, for ho could feel it heave beneath him. His limbs were racked with pain, but he would not give up. I asked him if be ■ should not have given up if I had not oomo to him as I did. He answered that he could not have done it wbilo he had life in him. He said he tboH not of bimself: he Was ready to die: but he would save the rest if he conld—and he bad Mved na, surely saved Us. The boy lay slak almost unto death; but I nursed him with my own haods—nursed him all through his deliriuiji ; and when his reason returned, and he could sit up and talk, I bowed'myself before him arid humbly asked life pardon for all thewtong I had done him. lie threw his arms around my neck, and told me if I would be good to him, Iiq would never give me cause of ofTccse ; and added, as he sat up again* " I am riot a coward, I could not bo a dogi" I never forgot those words; and from that hour I have never struck a bio* on board my ship. I make my men feel that they arn men, that [ so regard them, and that I wish to make them comfortable and happy as possible; and I have not failed to gain their rcspcct and confidence. I give no undue license; but make my qjfewd feel that they have a friend and superior hi the samo person. She was an old craft, and had seen full ai much service as »hc was capable of seeing with safety. Uut her owners were willing to trust a valuable CRrgo in her, so I would not refuse to trust myself. We were bound to Liverpool, and nothing unusual happened until about the eighth day out, when we ran foul of a small-iceberg. It was early in the morning, before sunrise, and not above six or eight fceC?%f ice was above the watsr, it having nearly all been mi lted in the warm region of the gulf | stream. 1 did not think we had sustained . much injury, for the shock was'light; but j Ijvas very angry, and gave the look-out a severe punishment, without stopping toinquirc whether ho could have seen the berg, in time to escape it. After supper I went to the hatchway • and called out to him but he returned mo Ino answer.
