Evening closed darkly a round the old gray farm house on the hillside, only a feint of light, where the western sky met the earth, telling of the glories of the vanished day. Through the dusky gloom came the glimmer of the lamps from the large kitchen where the family were gathered around the cozy fire place; the dcacon and his sons, together with George Stanley, a young neighbor, discussing politioa ; Minnie, his daughter, the rosiest and prettiest of village girls, paring apples quite contentedly, while in the back ground Mrs. Tborne sat knitting, her eyes fixed on the beautiful forms which the embers were assuming,The dcacon was getting excited. His eyes flashed, and he spoke in hasty, angry tones. » The passengers of whom there happened to be • large number, raahed into the dining room, and took their seats at tb« table, one of them depositing his carpet bag in a chair next to him. At the usual time the landlord passed around to make his collection, calling upon the aforesaid passenger for his payment for dinner.— " How muoh 7" says the passenger. " Eighty cents," replied the landlord. " Eighty cents for a dinner 7 Why that is extortionate." Lately he ordered large fires to be made in the court of the Tuileries to warm the servants of those whow he was going to entertain at his baall that night. Of all the chamberlains, pages, stewards, and other ogioials, nobody had thou&ht of their suffering brothers—are they not liveried men and brothers ?—but the Emperor did, and now again he has given an instance of this kind thoughtfulncss. Driving out of the Tuileries one of the bitterest days this winter, he perceived that when the guard—which was a mixed one of Frcnch and Turcos—-presented arms, the Algcrine soldiers had no gloves. Now, " clapping muskets," as poor Thackeray calls it in his charming description of Glb» ralter, without gloves, and when Mr. Chevalier's Centigrade instrument is registering ten degrees below zero, is perishing work. The Imperial carriage stopped. " How is it that your men have no gloves?"— " 8ire," replied the officer, " none have ever been served out to our corps." " To the Fournisseur" the Imperial carriage was ordered, and in half an hoar the shivering sentry had his first—In his life perhaps— pair of gloves. Lately he ordered large fires to be made in the court of the Tuileries to warm the servants of those whow he was going to entertain at his baall that night. The soldiers walk about Paris in them, and are as proud of them as the Highlander was of his first pair of those comfortable and necessary garments Which the Lowlander wears Instead of a kilt.
