Simple Thoughts in Simple Guilt. ire had been at work uDdcrncath the (■tooth surface of the plain, and had thrown these mounds up in the spirit of Cre mischief. That silver thread was our it glimpse of the* waters of the Euphrates, and the raoundsall that remains of the onoe beautiful hanging gardens of Babylon ; at least, »• the oonjectureg of men of research has accounted for them. Bat so completely have the propheoies been fulfilled—so completely has the " name and remnant been cut off" of all pertaining to the once mighty city, that even the great hill on which we were standing is only by conjecture supposed to be the ruin of some great building or royal palace that stood within the walls possibly the palace of Semiramis. Our servants thought the last day had come; and, as we heard afterward, this was the general impression throughout the town—for even the oldest " inhabitant" had never seen auy dust-storm* resembling this. In a boat five minutes tho darlcness began to clear; and as soon as we could see, wc found ourselves and everything belonging to us covcred with a fine, inpalpable dust, of a reddish celer. There is no sand of this color in any »f these deserts. As the darkness fled, a dulT red, luminous glare (the most imposing part of the stortn, I thought) succeeded, and steeped all surrounding objects. A hum frvm the bazaars suddenly arose, and soon swelled into a prolonged shout, in which it seemed that every soul in town who had a voice took part in the general rejoicing. We saw no snn setting that evening ; the sombre giate that came streaming into the window, bathing everything around, was gradually lost in the darkness of night. By ten o'cldck at night, as we smoked our pipes en the operi verandah, we looked up at the stars, shining forth bright and brilliant, but in vain did we look for »ny trace of the evening storm in the dark blue vault of S. April 9, 1863 Finding and Leather, French Calf, Kip, Oak Tanned Sole and Upper, We descended from the great mound, and made for thoso lcMer mounds which are supposed to be the sites of the hanging gardens of Nitocris and Semiramis. In one spot—the only thing we saw Dn the shape of a building in a state of ruin—was a mass of vitrified brick work, piercing the old noil and debris of centuries, angle upward. The bricks were square, of large size, and beautiful make; the angles of some clear and sharp, as if the brick had left the kiln yesterday, instead of twice two thousand years ago. Turning into a little hollow way between the mounds, wc came suddenly upon the colossal stone lion.— Time, with his hand, had knocked away at all sharp angles of the statue. The features of the Hon are completely obliterated, as 81*0 also those of the prostrate form that lies so helpless—so utterly and wholly human, beneath the upraised form of the king of beasts. TIIE TOWEE OF BABEL. 8TOIIE AND MANUFACTORY After a ride of about eigfit miles, we were at the foot of the Biers-Nimrod.-—■ Our horses' feet were trampling upon the remains of bricks, which showed here and there through the accumulated dust and rubbish of ages. Bofore our eyes uprose a great mound of earth, barren and bare. This was the Bier-Nimrod, the ruins of the Tower of Babel, by_ which the first builders of the earth had vainly hoped to scaJe high heaven. Here also it was that Nebuchadnezzar built—for bricks bearing his name have been found in the ruins. At the top of the mound a great mass of brick-work pierces the accumulated soil. With your finger you touch tho very bricks—large, square-shaped, and massive—that were " thoroughly" burned ; the very mortar— the " slime," now hard as granite—handled more than four thousand years ago by earth's impious peopla. James Rankin, Muncy Boro, Lycoming Co. The group represents itself to the eye, owing to the wear of old Time, much in the appearance of thoso vast blocks of Carrara marble which the bold chisel of Michael Angelo struck into, and then at the point that the shapeless marble had begun to assume the merest " abozzo" of the great sculptor's idea, the block was suddenly abandoned and left as ft wonder and a puzzle to future ages, so does this group of the Hon and (he man now bear an unfinished, unwrought appearance ; but you cannot look it it a moment, and not instantly avow the majesty and grandeur of the idea that once lay there so mightily embodied. This dafjc-colored collossal- statue, which may once have stood under the gorgeous queenly Seiniramifl—proud and supremely beautiful—may onco have bowed, stands now canopied by the grandest of all canopies, certainly—high heaven—but never noticed save by the desert wind that sweeps moaning over it, and the jackals that yelp around, as they hold high revel over the boned of some camel who has been good enough to die in the vicinity. First came the moan of a rushing mighty wind, as it swept angrily by. There were a few date trees in the garden below. Their sturdy leaves were for an ipstant strongly agitated ; the next moment thej were torn away with a crash, and then hftrricd along to the leeward as are the light leaves of a beech befote an autumnal breeze. The stout trees themselves waved to and fro, then bent down, and bowed humbly before the wrath of the gale. A'few scconds more, and th$ town was plunged into utter midnight darkness. Though two of us were standing within a yard of each other, out on the verandah, It was to trace cren the ontHntf of the figure, so impenetrable Was the gloom. There was a feeling that some kind of fine sand was pervading every sense of the body. There wm a peculiar taste in the atmosphere, and the eyes suddenly became painfully sore. After the one furious gust of -wind had passed, there was a great stillness in the air, aud immediately, as the darkness set in, the bun and hum of the baiaara were completely hushed. " Du tell! I think I should try mother," replied Betsey Ann, emphatically. Mrs. liarstow commenced skimming her milk and pouring the cream into her old fashioned churn. They wore farmers, and Mrs. Barstowc, was engaged in the dairy business. Each week she posted to a village near by and disposed of her butter to Squire Walker who dealt in country produce and groceries. Ere long she learned that she did not get half as much for her butter as lier neighbors were receiving, and this aroused her usual quiet temper, and she determined to demand an explanation of Squire Walker tho next time she went to market. 80 the following week, with her regular amount of butter, she presented herself at the grocer's counter and said. " Squire Walker, what are you paying for butter to day ?" tie opened her boxes, and after a earcful survey of the contents replied.-*— " Twelve and a half cents." 11HB undersigned liufinf looted for i» term of years the establishment formerly occupied by William l'ri.ce, jib a J)uor, Sash and Blind Manufactory, and having made extensive improvements in the Building and Machinery, is now prepared to do all kind* of work in his lino at short notice, such as A BAUD STORM DR. These lines are pronounced to be the remains of those canals that once conducted the-wnters of the Euphrates over the length and breadth of the ancient Hnbalonia. What mighty oanals must they have beenD that still showed, under the roll of centuries, such substantial traces t Now, not so much as a drop of water—no, not oven a drop of heaven's pearly dew, ever glistens, where once large ships must have navigated. Those mighty banks that carried fertility to every corner of the ancient kingdom are now mere useless, sightless mounds. No morning mist, moistening the thirsty earth, ever hangs ovfir them. No rain clouds ever shadow them, tempering the rays of a fierce dailyreturning suoi The end of her that " dwelt upon many waters" had beeti brought about only too surely. Thefcwful prophecies'had been fulfilled, and desolation in all its nakedness, in all its dreariness, was arotind us. After riding some two hours we arrived at the foot of the great mound We had seen in the distance in the morning. " Du tell!
