We become very observing where there is so little to observe. Does a fish jump from the water, a cask float by, or a ship appeal, hundreds turn at once to speculate upon its nature or appearance. To day we saw several sails, and passed u brig that run up the " Amerioan Flag" as we approached. As the flag went up, it was welcomed with cheers and waving of hats and handkerchiefs. JANUFACTrRETt 0» Friend Ricdart You asked me to tend you a sketch of oar voyage from the Valley to California. I will endeavor now, partially at least, to Fulfill my promue: The ory of "all aboard" had been given, the last farewells bad been spoken, and amidst the cheers of hundreds of spectators and friends, the beautiful " Ocean Queen" swung loose from the pier, and floated slowly towards the bay. Parting hours are seldom pleasant ones, and as we looked baok at the hundreds of loved ones who thronged the docks and stood on the ships that were lying there to catch the last look at those gone, many of them forever—at the spires and roofs of our cherished Metropolis, and lastly, at the land itself of our birth and history, fust sinking away into the blue of ocean—there were Thursday, April 30.—To-day the M. I.S. of the Ocean Queen, closed its brief, but very brilliant career. The President, more generally known on board as the "member from JUinoft," was speaking on "mCtn at a free m trnl agent," giving all preachers except Universalists, "particular fits," when some cruel fellow at the stern, cried out, "a whale!" Immediately, the crowd deserted the speaker to losk after tho other "blawcr." J.Ie waited until order was restored, and then launched out again. How soon will it be, I thought, before new scenes and associations will efface the love of the home we htve left behind us ? Later, when conversing with an old Califoroian on another subject, I was answered, " Yes, sir," said he, "California is loyal to the core." True, tho citizens of the Pacific coast have no pecuniary interest that binds them to the old States ; but our homes and friends were there, and affection lingers there still. We are yet members of one great household, and we hare no wish to disown our brethren. We possess the elements of a great empire on the West, but we have shared the glories of the Union in the old States, let them partake of our prosperity. But, we have left the states, and regrets may as well be smothered, for we could not return if we would, and we would not if we could. Hope generally builds very high castles for the future possession of the California emigrant. He dreams of a land of flowers and birds, and brooks, where money is shoveled up by pan fulls, and honors wait all who seek them. Of course, Mr. Editor, there are none of us to bedltappointed. Hut a stiff breeze is blowing this evening, and speculations in the future must give place to the stern realities of the present, for a sickcr crowd of people never prayed to be delivered from their troubles. Sea sickness is a must unwelcome sicknes*, for the sufferer feels deathly ill, imagines he will surely die, wants every attention, and yet rcceices no sympathy; for four out of five on whom lie calls, arc suflcring as much us he, while the fifth, knowing his friend will recover, thinks it an excellent joke father Neptune is playing on him, and laughs at his disj tress. Sea-sickneiss is a good test of temper. For persons contemplating marriage, a steamship would be the place to select a partner, for if a woman can hug a spittoon for two or threo hours, and retain her amiability meanwhile, rest assured she will Friday, April 24.—To day tabic tickets were given us. We were very fortunate in the numbers we drew, and were placcd (it the extreme aft part of the ship, the one of ail others most affected by the motion of the vessel, and most unendurable to a person subject to sea-sickness. Mother, and I the lady whose 8;at is next to her, find it I impossible to remain at the table at all.— ! You can imagine our position by supposing I yourself to be sitting on the end of a plunk 350 feet long, balanced on the top of a church steeple, and talcing a lunch there. To contribute still more to our comfort, a couple of sick women have been brought in from the 2d cabin, and placcd near us to serve as " relishes" for the two end tables, while in the state room behind mo, some individual not yet recovered from sea sickness, spelling " Ku-ropc," with all tho variations and inflections. My table companions were like a boy returning from school in the East, very bashful, very anxious to do everything right, and therefore very successful in doiiig everything wrong; a lady from New fork (a lady she was loo), a Mr. C. a segar aud liquor merchant, who was always in a good humor, a fat lady and her daughter, who were always endeavoring to impress upon the minds of others, that they were persons of extreme delicacy and refinement; although every move they made, proved them to have been born in a " garret and in a kitchen bred." "Waiter," she would say, can't you get me some chicken ? this mutton is tpoi/cd! 'Waiter,' this chicken is raw; can't you procure tne something that I can relish '( Sir, said she, one day to Mr. C, — I don't see how you can eat this food. 'Well, madam,' he replied, as he cut a huge mutton chop, "it is a very difficult feat to perform I assure you ; but 1 am traveling fur my health, and I couipell my stomach to tolerate it, or I should wither away like a wilted cabbage, in this debilitating climate." Madam, said he one day, "if I may be allowed to ask, what Friday, May 1.—Last night and to-day the weather has been very rough. Many of the passengers were sick ; the greater part ol the day was spent by tho officers in weighing baggage, and giving checks for the Pacific steamer. Many trunks were broken and damaged, and many threats of prosecution made against tho company.— One woman rated Capt. Wilson soundly, for allowing her trunk to bo broken; he assured her he should never do so again. A young follow was sitting on a trunk, examining a hat that lie had left with hb luggage. The crown of the stove-pipe was partly loose, ditto the rim. I'ulling it in and out, he says : "Well, Purser, that ain't much of a hat, but it will make a devilish good uccordeon." I do not know whether this is owing to tha fear entertained of Southern privateers, or whether there is always so little commerce in this quarter. We expect to morrow at G o'clock, a.m., to be iu Aspinwali. We have made a long trip owing to the large number of passengers and amount of freight on board. We have ran 600 miles out of our usuil course, to avoid Captain Scmmcs or any other Southern gentleman, who might be looking for a California steamer. I'ulling it in and out, he says : "Well, Purser, that ain't much of a hat, but it will make a devilish good uccordeon."
