S2U "Never Say Die."—Three months ago a young musician well known in this city, struggling with poverty, undertook to commit suioide. Jle had a single dollar remaining, with no prospect of obtaining more. Ho invested the dollar in a bottle of Ithine wine, drank it, and ordered up a three levy pair of slippers in which to "shuffle off the mortal coil." He decided upon drowning as the easiest method of leaving a frigid world. He went down to Callowhill street wharf, to commit suicide by drowning. One of the harbor policc divining his intention, took him to his house, and like a good Samaritan ministered to his necessities. IIo remained at the policeman's house for two days. While there he casually observed in n newspaper a four stanza balmd. In a moment of inspiration he improvised an air for it. He took oil new life. Eneigy was aroused within him, and he wrote out the melody with piano accompaniment. A publisher of musio next day agreed to get out the piece, with the usual copyright to the author. Mr. Benedict's former political antecedents (and ns he stills claims) was radical Democracy. He supported John C.
