Pittaton, July 2a, 1861, An Original Duel.—Old Colonel S., of Wisconsin, was an old genius, a queer compound of comic »eriousness. Replete with jokes, both original and selected, he was not slow in hatching them up and dealing them out in small doses on different occasions. One evening at a party, a young gentleman upon whom the colonel had told some cutting jokes, feeliner himself insulted, challenged the colonel to mortal combat. The challenge was accepted. Having the choice of weapons and the appointment of the place of meeting, the colonel told the young man to repair the following morning at six o'clock to a certain spot, and added, " that he would see that the weapons were there." The following morning, at the indicated time, the young man repaired to the indicated spot; said spot being among the lead mines, was naturally furrowed with mineral holes. "Well, Cnjester," said the oolonel, sticking his ds in his pockets and ejecting a superfluous quantity of tobacoo juice from his oapaeious mouth, " are you ready T" Receiving an affirmative answer,he oontinned: "Here's where we are to fight," indicating a mineral shaft near by, which waa at least fifty feet deep, " and here are our weapons," pointing to a pile of rocks. " You're to go down that ar hole and throw rocks up, and I'm to stay np and throw rocks down." It ia needless to add that the challenge was withdrawn. Hovr to Prevent Wet Feet.—A writer in the Meobanica' Magizin; says: I have had thiee pairs of boots for the last six years-—and I think I shall not require any more for the next six years to eome.— The reason is that I treat them in the folio ing manner: I pat a pound each of tallow and roeiu in a pot on the fire; when melted and mixed 1 warm the boots and apply it hot with a painter s brush until neither the sole nor tne upper leather will soak in any more. If it is desired that the boots should immediately take a polish, dissolve an ounoe of wax in a teaspoon f'ul of lambiack. A day or two after the boots have been treated with the tallow and rosin, rub over them this wax in turpentine, but not before the fire. Then the exterior will have a coat of wax alone, and ahine like a mirror. Tallow or grease beooaee ranoid, and rots the stitching and leatherj but the rosin gives it an antiaeptio quality, which preserves the whole. Boots and shoes should be so large as to admit of wearing cork soles. Cork is so bad a conductor of beat that with it in the feet are always warm on the ooldest stone floor. Bwotlsnd, I'ettibone and Shook vs. McLean. This wii an iuue asked for by Sheriff Van Loon under the interpleader act. After delaying the case ten days, when called for trial it waa found that the Sheriff had made no return to his writ. Of course there was nothing for the court to act on. The issue was continued to February with very slim chance of trial at that time. The fund in the case is due to a large number of laborers who must wait the result .with such patience aa they can summon. The Court intimated that if " gentlemen of the Bar" would pay a little attention to the preparation of their cases before called for trial it would save much time, expense and trouble. Tbi Atlantic Ocxan —The Atlantic Ocean includes an area of 25,000,000 square miles. Suppose an inch of rain to fall upon only one fifth of this vast expanse it would weigh 360,000,000 tons, and the salt which, as water, is held in solution in the sea, and which, when the water was taken up as a vapor, was left behind to distjrb the equilibrium, weight 16,000,000 more tons, or nearly twice as much as all the ships in the world could oarry at a oargo each. It might fall in a day ; but occupy what time it might in falling this rain is oaloulated to exert so much foroe—which is inconceivably a great—in disturbing the equilibrium of the ocean. If all the water discharged by the Mississippi river during the year were taken tip in one nightly measure, and cast into the ocean at an effort, it would not make a greater disturbance in the equilibrium of the sea than the fall of rain supposed. An amusing adaption of sacred poetry is toM of a good old lady, who, when told that the salvation of the country depends on tho Democratic party, exolaimed, Conversation is a sort of grand review of our intellectual powers, and we cannot be too careful how we mfester and marshal! them. Some men's army seems entirely m ide up of musicians; their talk is one burst of fancy and rhapsody ; others all artillery; they " speak in words hard as cannon-balls," however trivial nmji be the subject of diseourse. He is judicious who sets out his army in suoh a way that his forces—heavy horse or light foot—come up as they are wanted, and retire gracefully when they are no longer required. With the first cry of paia, the pleasant little band of pipers that good humor has always in control, should be eet to work, and the Wounded should be borne from the field without the slightest word of exultation from the victor. In beginning the contest, we should fellow the example of the Frenoh soldiers at Fentinbras, who, with a beautiful politeness, called upon their enemies to fire firirt. 1861. FILL GOODS. Ig61. And yet to gentle ire the Operations of nature that movements so vast are imperceived. ROBERT L. MULFORD, CORTLAND A. BPRAIiL'E Sculptor, and Dealer in MULFORD & SPRAGUE, Foreign and Domestic MARBLE. Her cheeks were red as roses, her faoe was all a-emile, and her tread it was as dainty as though earth were all too tile. It was her hour of triumph, and she didn't seem to know that a coasting sled was coming, at a speed not very slow. But it came, and ere she knew it, her " props" were knocked away, and she Was goftig down the street with a boy upon his sleigh. The wind it blew roughly, turning all the hoops aback, and of partly-smothered screams there wasn't any lack ; while the maiden didn't know what she was or Wasan't about, her person much resembling an umbrella inside ottt. The people stopped and wondered, as the swiftly speeding sleigh devotedly kept onward, rustiod past aud far away; the boy cried " road," and liked it, und " shied" his sled, with his owta feet pointing backward, and the maid's thrown out ahead. 1861. FILL GOODS. Ig61.
