THE PICKET OUABD. he had done wrong, but he felt that he had not forfeited forgiveness. With br.t ohd farewell glance at his mother, full of unspoken gratitude and love, he left the house which had been to him bo long a home. This was the fault of which Henry Hollbrook had been guilty : " Haying been sent to New York by his father to collect a sum of money due him, ho had been allured to a gaming house by a companion, and thero induced to play, though not until after much persuasion.— Having lost a part of tho money in his charge, he-kept on playing in tho hop# of recovering his loss. But as might have been expected, he lost all that remaiucd of tho money. Then thoroughly ashamed, and bitterly upbraiding himself for his breach of trust, ho went home and confessed all. This oonfession was received, as we have seen, in such a way as to chill his confidencc and excite his indignation. And now ho had gone forth from home, a wanderer, he knew not whither, with not one effort on his father's part to stay him. Let mo do Deacon Hollbrook the justice to say that it was not his own personal loss that excited his vigor. The sum, though not large—8100—was yet of importance to him. 8till he could overlook that, but not his son's weakness and crime, as he termed it, by which it was lost. After Henry's departure, the old houso "became quieter than before. All the life bad gone out of it. Deacon Holbrook himself was a man of few words, and in his taciturnity had abated his social tenden- C cics. Very long, very quiet, and very tc- | dious were the evenings which they spent i together. On one side of tho fire sat the Deacon, gravely reading through his spec- ( taclcs tho agricultural papers, which came i weekly. Opposite him sat his wife, her C fingers actively engaged in knitting, her 1 mind intent npon her absent boy. All was I staid, quiot and subdued. There was not 1 even a kitten to enliven the scene. Mrs. t Hollbrook bad once ventured to introduce one in the house, but the Deacon speedily intimated his disliko of cats, and puss had been banished. | t and in whoso integrity lie had the utmost confidence. Bat to-day the astounding intelligence had arrived that the officer, after serious defalcations, had fled the country, and left his bondsman to suffer. The amount for which the Deaoon had become bound was sufficient to swallow cp the house and farm—all in fact he possessed. The farm was not a valuable one. It comprised sixty acres of rough soil, which by hard labor had been made to suffice for the moderate wants of a small and econom ical family. In the market it would not bring over three thousand dollars, and for that amount the Deacon was bound. Yesterday lie reckoned himself rioh—now ho regarded himself as a pauper. " This is indeed worse than death," tho't the Beacon, with stern sorrow. "The Lord has indeed smitten me in my old age." Little time was given for anticipation before the blow fell. The Hollbrook farm was advertised for sale at auction, to take place in three weeks. Bills were printed and posted about on fence, and in stores. This free lunch is continued for a number of nights until the pests aforesaid have come to look upon it as a settled " institution." When this point in the plot is achieved, two slits are cut in the hide at right angles with each other, and the viands set out as before. Now when the doomed vermin rally at night, all unsuspecting of disaster, they leap immediately upon the treacherous skin and fall plump into the water with whioh the barrel is half filled; once there, they swim to a stone that rears its friendly summit above tho flood and forthwith squeal vociferously. Other rats, being socialists by nature, immediately rush to the aid of their distressed fellow-sufferers, but by reason of the hide resuming its normal position after each victim's disappearance, the whole brood are involved in one common ruin ; at least so says our informant, and he further adds that he has destroyed either 11 or 77 (his figures stand for either) in one night. The third figure in the tableaux was a young man with a irank, handsome face, of years not exceeding 20, who stood in the middle of the floor with a downcast look, shrinking from the angry words which his father uttered. ' So days, months, and even years passed It lacked but a month of five years since Henry Hollbrook left his home. There was little change in the air of the grave, sober mansion of Doacon Hollbrook. The Deacon himself had failed more in these five years thnn in any five previous. His form had lost its ancient erectness, and was- bowed. His face had grown wrinkled and he spent more time in the bouse. Mrs. Hollbrook received tidings at short intervals. Henvy was well, he wrote; but he did not enter into particulars. Some time he should return to see his mother. Of his father he didn't speak. These letters were all bro't homo from the village Post-Office by Deacon Hollbrook, but he never signified any curiosity or interest to learn their contents. Henry's name had not been mentioned between the two for years: yet—and let it not surpriso th# reader—it would not be difficult to tell which thought of him the most constantly. When this point in the plot is achieved, two slits are cut in the hide at right angles with each other, and the viands set out as before.
