AND MALT LIQUORS, How brilliantly the fire-light and gaslight illuminated that cozy little room at Lee Worcester's, with pink tinted walls, and crimsoned carpet, sprinkled with small white buds The piano was strewn with sheets of music, just as it had been left, its keys glimmering softly in the subdued radienco of one jet of light that glowed through a frosted shade above. The table was all set—I had often dreamed of a home of my own that should be something like Lee Worcester's, in its snug evening comfort, and somehow tbe table always formed part of the phantom. There was something so bright and cheerful in the snowy damask, and the sparkling glass and glittering china. Old bachelor that I was, the golden blocks of cake and tiny white muffins, breaking into crisp flakes, that melted in one's mouth, and amber jellies, quivering like gigantic jewels through their orystal prison walls, producing a wonderfully agreeable effect in my epicurean sight.— And I could imagine no prettier vision to crown it all than Mary Worcester, in her crimson merino dress, edged around the throat with delicate lace, presiding at the silver tea urn. I bad just finished my breakfast, and the tiny silver ohoohlatiere, with the bachelor service of transparent china still stood on the table. It is a game consisting of two men in their shirt sleeves, punching balls about on a table and presenting the keeper of the table with fifteen cents—or as is most commonly the case in this oountry, telling him to " mark it down." This lost mentioned custom has given them the title of billiard-markers. If you have decided genius for the game you will make a superior player at the expense of about 9100.— Blacksmiths, carpenters, cct., play it for exercise. The table was all set—I had often dreamed of a home of my own that should be something like Lee Worcester's, in its snug evening comfort, and somehow tbe table always formed part of the phantom. There was something so bright and cheerful in the snowy damask, and the sparkling glass and glittering china. The snow had ceased falling and the sun shone brilliantly. D'Artier's was full; there was at least a dozen ladies that I knew sitting at the tiny marble tables. I tried to assume an air of easy impudence, as if I bad only come in fbr a pound of chocolate aluionds, but it was no use; I could not disguise the latent shcepishncss of my aspect as I slowly sauntered up to the counter. " For mercy's sake, dear Lee, do tell me where you picked up that ridiculous report 1" " Ridiculous report! that's pretty cool, upon my word and honor," exclaimed Lee. The soft flushes of color came and went across her cheeks, and her coral lips dimpled with the brightest smiles, yet all the time I could not divest myself of the old impression that she was ready to melt into an April shower of tears at any moment.
