S. vessels destroyed at the Norfolk Navy Yard, to prevent their falling into the hands of the secessionists. Every person, I presume, from my own feelings, on seeing military companies parading. must have observed a different sensation by the sight of soldiers neatly uniformed from those in their ordinary clothing. Tho men in the former ca«e seem to possess, themselves, a degree of pride and noble carriage apparently not risible in the latter. Huch being my own views, I was gratified in finding them to coincide with those of one of Pennsylvania's own celebrated generals daring the Bevolution, as found in a letter from Gen. Anthony Wayne to President Wharton, dated Whitemarsh, Nov. 22, 1777, when troops were being raised, as at present, in an early part of the war. The who letter would bo well worth reprinting, as furnishing many useful hints; but as it is rather long, I send only an abstract suited to my purpose. It is found in vol. VI p. 25 of the Pennsylvania Arcjiives, lately published by the State: Mulford & Spraguc, W. p. nr.XKETT, AN AMKHICAK I* ITKART. These " times which try men's souls " are producing their effects among hs. The spirit of patriotism is very manifest in this section of the County. There is but one feeling expressed, and that is, the government mutt be sustained, and treason, one of the highest crimes, known to human law, effectually rebuked. Already some twelve of the most likely young men have offered their services to defend their country. A respectable lady said to the writer yesterday, her first feeling, was, (on hearing that the horrors of war were upon us,) one of relief that her sons were too young to be exposed to the dangers of war—but upon reflection it was rather regret that she had no sons to offer for the defence of her country.ST. Tiie Frigates and Corvettes :LKCTKTD 8T0CK OF F.UESIL BJ'UING GOODS, to llf*r I: The most obvious characteristic of A mcrican humor is its power of "pitching it strong," and drawing the long bow. It is the humor of exaggeration. This consists | of fattening up a joke until it is rotund and rubicund, unetioua-md irro«»tiblc as Palatal! himself, who was created by Shakspearc, and fed frit, so as to bceome for all time the very impersonation of humor in a state of corpulence, That place in the Geography of the United States called "Down East" has been most prolific in the monstrosities of earth. Only there would a tree'd coon have cried to the marksman with his gun pointed, "Don't fire, Colonel, I'll come down." Only in that region do they travel at such speed that the iron rails get hot enough to serve the carriages with heat instead of hot-water bottles, and sometimes so hot that on looking back you see the irons writhing about like live snakes, trying to wriggle off to the water to cool themselves. Only there do they travel so fast that the signal whistle is of no use for their engines, because, on one occasion at least, the train was in, and smashed in a collision, long before the sound of the whistle got there! Only there can a blow be struck so "slick" as to take an animal's car off with such ease, that the animal does not know he is one ear short until he puts his forefoot up to scratch it. Only there, surely, are the theives so 'cute that they drew a walnut log right out of its bark, and left five sleepy watchers all nodding as they sat astride a tunnel of walnut-wood rind. North Carolina, we suppose, cannot be "Dawn East," else some of the stories that "Skitt" tells in his "Fisher's lliver Seenes and Charaqtera" have the old family features as like as two peas. Charles Lamb's idea of the worst possible inconvenience of being in a world of toal darkness was, that, after making a pun, you would have to put out your hand and grope over the listner's face, to feel if he was enjoyiug it. It would require a broad grin to be felt. Some of these stories are of the sort to produce a broad grin which might be felt in total darkness.—North British Re- The Mcrrimacis one of the six steamers the construction of which was authorized by Congress in 1855. She was built at Charleston, is 3,200 tuns burden, and rates 40 guns. The Merrimack made but one cruize, viz: as late flag-ship of the Pacific Squadron. She was relieved by the new steam-frigate Lancaster last year. The authorities ordered her outfit a few weeks ago, thinking to remove her from Norfolk; but events were too quck for them. I* WasJiinf/ton in danger? is the question of the hour. We answer unhesitatingly no. There was danger, but it is past. It was possible for the Rebels to have capturcd the National Capital by a ru; tD upon it when without the necessary Troops for its defencc; but that time » past. The attacking army must approach from tho South side of th Potomac, a large river, and at this season of the year full of water above the head of tide. The long bridge at Washington, and the bridge at Georgetown and the fulls of the Potomac arc in our possession; and a Battalion of Artillery could defend the passage at either point, against any force the Rebel chiefs could bring agaijjst them. The river therefore, must be crossed in boats either above the Falls or below Green leaf ! Point; nud the public may rest assured, that whenever the attempt bo made, Genl- Scott will know of it in time to prevent the passage by any considerable rebel force. The force in Washington this evening, will be sufficient to authorize the Government to dctach any number of men they may think expedient, for the purpose of holding in check any army attempting to cross the Potomac, until further reinforcements arrive; and then it would be well to invite the Chivalry to pay their respects to our people at the capital. Jeff. Pavis says, he intends to dine in tne White House on the first of May! Although self-invited, the feast will be duly prepared and he and his friends, are earnestly invited to come and partake of it. Wo promise them a warm reception, and also venture the prediction that a majority of tho Red Wine which will flow on the occasion of this National Banquet, will be furnished by rebels and traitors, who, having volunteered to be present, now rudely threaten to play the part of Host instead of Guests.— (Jour. «f- Inq. That Ifcig that has been carried to countless victories in the wars of peace and civilization, and under whose ample folds, and glittering stars, millions still offer their services, their honor and their lives, has been trailed in the dnst, and trampled with the cloven foot of anarchy and secession. «f- Inq.
