Without advocating the doctrines of Gr» ham, we incline to the conviction that animal food taken once a day is sufficient for the majority of persons, whether adult or not. The {creasy messes wh'eh many permit themselves to devour both at breakftlt and "tea," will sooner or later exact a penalty, however strong the patient. In England they are more sensible respecting the first meal, which is usually exceedingly plain and frugal. A rasher of bacoa and an egg constitutes the breakfast of many distinguished Englishmen whoset names are as well known in America as at home. Their theory is, that a man is not fit to encounter the business of the day with an overburdened stomach : and s very sensible theory it is. The ciirnne of our great hotels is generally as unhealthy as it is lavish and there can bo no doubt the seeds of chronio dyspepsia are constantly sown at their groaning tables. We hope to see a reform in this matter. We hope to see Ameriesn mothers get sufficiently sensible to restrain their darlings from indulging in the corrupting dainties which spoil tneir stomachs and sap their strength. Selfcontrol is constantly inculcated as applicable to all other affairs of life; there is none in which the application is more salutaiy than in relation to tho pleasures of the table. Make the girls and boy* live as plainly as Transatlantic girls and boys, and the good old Saxon fibre and eomplexion will come baek again, and better still, the next generation will be twenty per cent, happier in consequence.—'New York Courier and Enquirer. In general the philosophy of eating may be said to bi in • fkir way of being more studied and understood than has bithertC been the ease; and the natural result sbo'c be found in improved average health, anc increased average longevity. Every one who has been abroad lcnowt by personal observation,—and every on« who has not, knows through unanimous reports—that wo Americans are not as healthy-looking as are most of the Kuropean nations. Oar men are lank and skinny, usually possessed of considerable nervous strength, but very little aturdiness.— Oar women are fragile and weakly, and their complexions are gone very early in life. An American girl of twenty-five is generally not more youthful-looking than in English woman ten years her senior.— IVhy should this be ? They take more exercise, says one. They are more in the Dpen air, says another. The humidity of ;he English olimate is more favorable to ;he preservation of the complexion, says a hird. JBJ— At* SHOES. March 18th, 1861. Hurrah! Hurrah! NEW Messes. Editors : St. Patrick's tiny coming on the Sabbath this year, our Irish citizen* celebrated it to-dny. They left town early this morning, and entered this afternoon at three o'clock. The procession was very large and made a rery respectable appcarance. Everybody seemed to regard it as a holiday, and a crowd of people was assembled in the vicinity of Broad and Tamnqua streets, to see them enter town. There is much prejudice in the minds of common (and in a great many who thim/c themtclvei uncommon,) in regard to the Irish celebr .ting this day, and they take every opportunity to insult those who regard the day. We believe that true Americans celebrute thebir.h-day of Washington, in every country where they may be east, and shall we, who boast of our superior liberality as a nation, heap insult on others, for holding in grateful remembrance the hcly man who Grot taught the Christian religion in Ireland It Every Christian heart must respect the feeling, however they may differ in opinion. And if I hey err, I think, to dress in broadcloth and wtar a long face at chuich on Sunday, then tell them that "every d—d papist ought to be strung up by the neck," is a poor way to conviuee them of the superiority of our religion.— Excuse this digression; I did not mean to 1 wander so far fiom the events of the day. Al'ier the procession passed, a row, or free fight took place in front of Lawal's hotel. Women with anxious faces were seen hurrying to tl»c place, and boldly waking their way through the crowd, pulled their half drunken husbands away, and coaxed them home. Others less fortunate departed weeping, while burgess, burgess elect, constable and policfuicn looked on to see fair play. It seems that some st angers were iu the orowd, boasting their ability to whip anybody in Hatletou. One of the bullies was tuken away by his friends, with his ear bit off. To their credit be it spoken, there wot not a green ribbon in the crowd. It is not often we have such disgraceful scenes in Hazleton, and I must say the men seemed to enjoy the novelty. We had no fil ing here on the fourth in honor of the imiuguratioo, but the band gnve s delightful serenade in the evening. You will no doubt think this cews comes rather lato. I must co less to a feeling of diffidence last week in regard to seeing my common place letters in print, after reuJing the rich, spicy letter of "Aunt Putty." It hath been whispered to me, Mr. Editor, that " Annt Patty " walks the streets in male attire. Of course I don't believe it, and hope the slander will not wound her sensitive heart. To prove my sieenty I intend to visit Newark as soon as convenient and become acquainted with her. Plttston, March 29, 1800.—tf. A Law against obtaining Husbands undf.ii False Pretences.—That all women, of whatever age, rank, profession or degree— whether virgins, maids or widows —who shall, after this act, impose upon, reduce, and betray into matrimony any of his Majesty's male subjects, by virtue of sccnts, paints, cosmetic washes, artificial teeth, false hair, Spanish wool, iron, iron stays, bolstered hips, hoops, high-heeled shoes, shall incur the penalty of the law now in force against witchcraft and liko misdemeanors; and the marriage, under sach circumstances, upon conviction of the offending party, shall be null and void. And thus prodigal nature rained down beauty, and had done so for ages unseen by man. And yet some flatter themselves with the ides that this world was planned with strict reference to human use; that the lillies and the fleld exist simply to appeal to the of the beautiful in man. True, this result is secured, bat it is one of a thousand all equally important in the eyes of Nature. Whence those ftvsen blossoms ? Why for jfienas wasted? lb« question reminds om of the poet's answer, when asked wheuce the Rhodora: " Why wert thou there, O rival of the rosef I never thought to aak, 1 aever knew; Bat, in mv simple ignorance, suppose. The self-fame power that brought me there, brought you if various degrees in significance; but we Delieve the grand cause which underlies ill minor ones of our physical deterioration, s to be found in that national sin which prings from orer-abundance—intemper- intemperinee in eating. It is contended that our climate is an ixhausting one; that the extremes of heat »nd cold enfeeble the constitution, suggesting the necesaity for a stimulating diet to inatain the vital forces; and that the desiccating nature of our atmosphere attenu ites the tissues. But, even supposing all tbia to be true, tbere is surely no reason implied why the stomach should be so terribly punished as it often is,in consequence ; on the contrary, we areof opinion that there is as radicalan unsoundness in any such argument, as though wo were to say that, inasmuch as food ia cheap and plentiful, wc should therefore use it to cxcess It is not, perhaps, going too far, to say that if, by any possible sumptuary enactment, people war. obliged to eat just one-half the quantity, and consume in the process just twice tke time used st present, there would be a speedy diminution in the bills of mortality. The notion that a climate like ours necessitates a prodigious consumption of what ia termed oarbonaceous fuod, is probably as fallacious aa it is general. The English and Irish laborers, who taste meat, in the average, perhaps once a week, are heartier looking and longer-lived than ours, who gorge oarniveroualy three times a day. It ia useless to endeavor to counteract any evil, or to inatitoto any reform, unless we commence at tbo very root or foundation, and work upwards. The root and foundation of the evil wa discuss, lies in the systematic over-feeding of children.— Not in respect to quantity; a growing creature usually requires the amount of plain food which it has the inclination to take ; hut the nature of thb food we give to children is too frequently such that we might almost as well give them rank poison. Fat meats, rieh gravies, pastries, bon-bons of all manner of unwholesome substances, are among the effective materials American parent* employ to insure tbeir offsprings the blessings of shattered nerves and diseased stomachs, when they shall have arrived at maturity. In most civilized countries but this, children, even of the rioh, are not permitted to take meat at breakfast, to indulge in tea or coffee, or in anv spiced or "made" dishes, until their growth is tolerably completed. We are quite confident that the children of Queen Victoria up to their fifteenth or sixteenth year, werC not ftUew«& to 4* either of these liut here, over-indulgent mothers, on thC plea of climatic necessity, stuff their un fortunate though willing victims, until the? arc positively confirmed dyspeptics befor they have attained the age of puberty.- VVhen, on the other hand, people are m fortunate as to be too poor to cram thei vouog with rieh food, tho latter know no the panga of indigestion, and often earrj sound livers to an advanced period ot i»e " -«v world arounc •n and th r\ BECK.
