Dinner over, clean linen donned, and a pair of white kids purchased by the landlard, at his quest's and Mr. Mason's carriage was announced. f Arrived at the magistrate's house, AllDort found it a large stone mansion ; he luid "iily time to notice that the first and second floors wore one blaze of light, when the elderly gentleman who had welcomed him in the morning came out to repeat his welcome to his own house. First escorting him to the dressing room, he inquired anxiously if his ride had over-fatigued him. After dancing with each of the host's daughters and the prettiest girls in tho room, the lad went to the open window looking upon the garden, and stood there, heart ly tired of being a lion. His respite was a short one. Azelia cumc to his side ; holding out to him a folded paper, she said— There is no mistake that many a man gives out in lifo, where there is no apparent cause for it whatever. We see a person fade entirely out of both character and consideration, but where he went or how he went is a problem that nobody seems to know how to solve. It is called by some the dry rot disease, and is well named. A writer who has observod closely in these matters remarks that the first strong external revelation of the dry rot in men, is a tendency to lurk and lounge ; to be at street corners without intelligible reasons; to be going anywhere when met; to bo about many places, rather than at any ; to do nothing tangible, but to have an intention of performing a variety of intangible duties to-morrow or the day after. When this manifestation of the disease is observed, the observer will usually connect it with a vague impression onoe formed or reoeived, that the patient is living a little too hard. He will scarcely have had leisure to turn it over in his mind and form the terrible suspicion, dry rot, when ke will notice a change for the worse in the patient's appearance—a certain slovenliness and deterioration, which is not poverty, nor dirt, nor intoxication, nor ill-health, but simply dry rot. To this sncoeeds a smell as of strong waters, in the morning; to that, a stronger smell, as of strong liters, at all times ; to that, a looseness respecting everything; to that, a trembling of tho limbs, somnolency, misery, and crumbling to pieces. Dry rot advances at a compound usury quite incalculable. A plank is found infected with it, and the whole structure is devoted. Da. ST. CHARLES HOTEL. PKS'N AVENUK Berauton. Pa.—D. K. KRESSLER. Prop r. May 10. I860.—ly. Da.
