It was the perfect resit dence of a Chinese gentleman. There wa# a very large garden, with bamboo hedges 'and large fish tanks, edged with if alls of blue briplpj and performed tiles. About the grounds were nut* megs, mangos teens, plantains, cocoanuts, dariens, and small creepers trained inte baskets and pagodas. Inside the house the drawing-rooms had doors sliding across circular openings. W® tlyeji wept on to this good gentleman's private residence, entering by a Chinese triumphal gate. It is of the camelia tribe, three or four feet high, and bears a small white flower, like the opening dog-rose J also I was shown the "moon-flower," 9 Jfind of rounded convolvulus, that only opens at night. There was a bower of "monkey cups"—the pitcher floypf, fffrich collects water, and from which Jocko re? freshes himself in the jungles. The fan palm— a beautiful tree on the lawn—produced water of clear cold quality, by being piercod with a penknife. Several njinute Pfcepora were trained over wire foraps, to imitate dragons, with egg-shell for their eyes; and there jyej-e many of the celebrated dwarf trees—the first I had ever seen—little oaks and elms about eighteen inches high, like small withered old men.
