Is it not 1 'TIa monstrous, yet true, and many sacrifice the welfare and comfort of their families, diurnally, for jurt such paltry triumphs.— To wear the finest hat, the cosilie6t shawl, boast the rhnst beautiful lournure, have the most beutilul cflild, or Amistus Canar dut teeth, or sit alona before Mrs. Grundy's etc., etc., are the soli1 aims of some women's lives—beeavse they havd been debarred from proper mental culture.— They must have some object in life ; and b« assured, if they ftre not taught to strive for a proper goal, titer will seek an improper or contemptible one. Tim New York Tribuuo publishes the following thrilling sketch: s 44 Can't Afford Books."—What ? Not able to buy books Tor yourself and children ! Vou are loo poor, you say ; provisions are so high, and books are a luxury 7 You smoke, rou chew tobacco, you indulge in an occasional glass; your wile wears a rich silk lOr her best dress; your daughter upends not a Mule on ribbon; and vet you say you can't afford to buy instructive books, which, if a just discrimination is to be made, are far less luxuiiou* than either of these. Cigars, silks and ribbons can be done without, and at no greater sscrilioe than that of a useless habit, or the denial ol some personal vanity ; but books are absolutely necessary to you, if you would keep pace wi'.b the increase ol knowledge, or cuhivate the higher parts ol nature, lor it is absolutely true ol every man, no matter what his original gifts, thai, it ha does not advance, h« recedes ; and that he will recede, if ho devote* his leisure to merely sensuous gratification, to the lusts of the eye or the flesh. No one can advance in intellectual or spiritual development, without cultivating those parts of Lis nature, and books are one of tar appointed means ibr litis. " A wealthy and intelligent man, who did not drink in society, nor habitually at home, had a room in bis mansion in which as otleu as three or lour timet a year, he would gorge himself with liquor. \VliCln lie found his cravjngs for rum coming on he would lock up in that room until iho ' acuta ' .was over. The appear mice of his room at the close ot one ol the.se sprees was disgustingly filthy.. A friend who knew his Imbila remonstrated with liirn, but was told that reform was impossible, so irresistible was his cravings for rum at Q-rtuin times. Ilia friend begged him to try. His two soil', fifteen ami seventeen years ot age, earnestly pressed ihe appeal. At last, the man consented to try, and drawing from liis pocket a key, saiJ to his oldest son ' Here is the key to the liquor closet: will you take it and promise on no condition, and tor no violence with which I may threaten you, to dive it up when I demand it ?' The boy, knowing bow furious his tailier Wna on iheae occasion*! declined the trust. The father then a*ked his younger son, a boy of uncommon nerve, the same ioos, and he promptly rC plied, '1 wi.J.' For a few weeks, things went on stnoolhiy, but one day, the fattier came home at an unu sua! hour. His manner betokened that his appetite was gnawing and craviug.— If) called his younger son, and demanded ibe key to the liquor-closei, but was r«- lused,- firmly. The refusal maddened him and seizing some weapon, he sprang at hi* aon. For a moment, he stood over him, with glaring eyes, and insane with rage, but the ycKing hero never quailed.— Fixing his firm, but fearful eye on his father, he said :—•'* Father, 1 promised that 1 would not. j(ive you that key, iuD matter what violence you might threaten, end now von may kill me, but I will never give "you that key !" Instantly the weapon dropped from the man's hand, and, as he himself expressed it, "the appetite for liquor seemed to abandon me before the noble firmness of my son." He was reclaimed and never fell.
