His father emigrated from Ireland when vhung, and settled in Pennsylvania, where lie married Miss Mary Smith. They had five ohildren—three daughters and two sons. Robert received his education in Lancaster oily. In his boyhood, all his lieaure hours were paaaed in mechanics' shops or in painting.* At 17 years of age he came to Philadelphia, where he waa occupied in painting portraits and landscapes. In 1807, amidst the jeora and ridicule of hie fellow citisens he launched his steamboat "Clermont" upon the Hudson river, at New York city, and there were not thirty persona in tlia city who believed that the boat would ever move one mile an hour, or even be of the leaat utility.
