Original and one woman, two Irjlet removed !— But Mr. Bruco was a man of means and talent, and had he remained would have helped you to mniniain Churches and schools, anu all public enterprises ; »nd Mrs. Bruce would have been a star of intelligence and refinement among you ; and would hovo blessed you by her kindly Christian examplo in all fuiure time. Our rifles had been left in the boat. The Gov. ernor dieDv himself gradually down the bank, on his hands and feet, ordering me not to move. I remember when sick at Hong Kong, 1 was crammed into the cabin of an old storeship, so full of cockroache.", and thee so ravenous, that they kept my toe nails quite close cvory night, and wotilJ try the flavor of the top of my head, and when they found that to be all bone, they ate my hair and whiskers, the lust circumstance being very annoying from the fact that whiDkers were scarce with me in those days. But 1 would have preferred any ol those r.n/ioyances to the attack of the Santa Rosa fleas. On lighting ft candle we found the pluce alivo with them Unlike, both in appearance and manner, the modest flea ol ordinary life, that seeks concealment as soon as by accident it is unearthed, these insects, reared in the rough school of a bullock's hide, boldly fuced as they atlacked us. We discovered next day that the room, the floor and walls of which were of earth, had contained hides, and had been cleared out for our accommodation. Fleas not only abound in the sltin of every beast you kill, hut even live on the ground, like little Iterds of wild cattle, arid nuts are of all shapes and sizes, and stand up savagely ou their hind legs, and open their mouths savagely, if you only look at them. The wasps attack any m«-at that may be hanging up, and commence at once cutting out small pieces, which they carry home, and it is antonishing what a quantity they will carry away with them. Tnc Cheapest Food.—One hundred pounds of good wheat flour contain 90 lbs. of pure nutritive matter, and 19 pounds of water. One hundred pounds of potatoes contain i'rotn 20 to 25 pounds ot nutritive matter, depending on the quality of the potatoes, say 22* pounds, on an average, consisting almost entirely of starch, and 77J pounds of water and inert matter. It requires, therefore, exactly four hundred pounds of potatoes to supply the same amount of nutriment that one hundred pounds of wheal flour supply. The best potatoes weigh about G4 pounds to the bushel, and a bushel contains 15 1 5 lbs. of nutriment. At two dollars per bushel, or fifty cents a peck, tho retail price lately, the nutritive portion of potatoes costs a fraction over fifteen cents a pound, which is equivalent to twenty three dollars and fifty cents fur a barrel ol good flour.— While flour has doubled in price only, potatoes have increased at fourfold rate.
