She speaks of the gentleness and modesty of Anna Lane, of her qutet happiness beneath her father's roof, wor. shipped by a tender mother, and watched over with unceasing care by a high minded and devoted brother. She depicts her as tha pride of the village, and welcome as a sunbeam to the hearts and homes of all ; sprightly but dignified ; trustful bu: innocent ; a companion tor the white hair ed sage, a playmate for the little child.— Bui lo, a cioud, black and dismal, and belted by the lightning, ia casting its shad, ow over the hearthstone where she dwells. The slanderer has painted its inky face, and the lightning is the reflection of that deathless tire that consumes his own fiendish heart.
