It had been eight'or ten years since this gentleman had visited his property, and, as the management was left entirely in the hands of my lather, I sometimes accompanied him thither when tic went on business. A housekeeper and a few laborers, occupied a portoinof the mansion, which in our neighliorhood was considered a model of old fashioned It had deep, wide windows, tall quaint chiineys, a poarch with, clustered columns, draped with luxuriant vines and fragrant plants, and not far frown it, its grey edges gleaming out from the green mountain side, arose the towerlike eriig whietr had given the place a name we considered worthily bestowed, viz:— Eagle's OlitF. I was never tired of wandering through the glittering rooms of this beautiful dwelling ami while my fether talked with the men I would steal away idooe, or sometimes accompanied by the liouaekceper to admire the rich furniture a«d carpets, to gaze at the pictures which adorned it, or to look from the windows, whose deep recrssea showed the thickness a*' the wails, upon the magnificent prospect which,jt overlooked. In connection with the above, may be lound a general assortment of ICE AND ICE HOUSES. "Ice four or live incites of even thickness, is tetter than that of greater thickness to pack oway by and can bo more readily cut into squares of convenient size, for handling. One of the great sccrets in keeping ice, is prpper draining and a good covering of some non-conducting substance. Saw dust, Turners chips and shavings are the best articles we know of. All three mixed, will do very well. After the ice has melted from the sidat, from four to six iuclies fill up $e. spaco with saw dust or with shavings, packed, and then cover the top with the same'to the fhefith of about silt rntefi'ej. A loose straw covering is of little or no use, except to protect the ice from the rays of the suit- It,requires something that will follow tl*e cicvic-fs and adhere to the ice. Brail is an excellent article to preserve small quantities of ice in the house C5r cellar. In our ice house, which is about four feet under ground, we have a small division of about four feet wide, for a mijk house or ccllar apartment. The partition fs sihiply n lining of plank or boards with n narrow dbor in the cbrher, communicating-Willi the ice. luto this we empty the saw dust, 8c., before tilling the ice house, to be used again in April or May, or when the ice has melted from the sides. We have used the same material this way for the last four years. Some years since we kept-ice until September in a cellar by digging a hole 4 by 6 feet, and about 3 feet deep, and boarded up to tire ceiling. The cellar, however, should be a dry one as the ice would soon waste if the water should get into it e'vc» for n short time. —Sttnhury American. PHILADELPHIA. tpM* on.BEST. •Sll.** II. It lay within a bend of the stream, which here being dark and deep, (lowed winding and sounding beneath the sheltering bulwark of giant lulls, which appeared to recede from the eye until their purple summits melted away irr the far Mue distance; immediately arowwl the wide valley, with its fertile iMttt undulating fields, its green meadows and feathery coppices, its towering trees and luxuriant shrubs, all presenting a thousand charms to the eyes of ihc admirer of nature. •Sll.** II.
