The call for the meeting was issued by the Civil Service Keform association of Luzerne county, of which T. R. Hillard Is president and W. J. Trembath. secretary. An ultimatum has been iaaued by both Judge KosaUky and Mr. Jerome declaring tbat hereafter gamblers will be dealt with severely. Never in (he history of Lackawanna county was a coroner's Jury confronted by such a perplexing case as the Dunmorc "hat pin" mystery proved to be. Nearly three hours were consumed by the Inquest, during which time each of the witnesses was carefully and thoroughly examined by Coroner Stein, County Detective Phillips and eufli of the Jurors, but little or no new evidence could be obtained as to the exact cause anil manner of the death of Thomas Dougherty, who passed away last Sunday at the Scrantoti State hospital as the result of a fatal wound he received by being stuck throng]) tiie. heart .with some sharp in, strument. As soon as the burglars got into the it loon they made for the supply of V /. vigars. A door from the bar room leads upstairs and in a room at the head of the stairs a box containing the sum mentioned had been left In plain view. For some reason the burglars did not ascend the stairs, and It Is thought they were scared away by some Imaginary noise. » Prince's Bad Record. Prljictf George, the heir apparent to the throne of Servla, was born Aug. 27. 1887. Many reports of au unfavorable nature have been circulated concernlug the young prince. One writer classed Prince George as a "semi-Insane young savage, regardless of every restraining Influence of law, conventionality, decency aud civilisation." DEATH AT PLAINS. PLATT TO RESIGN. Mr*.„ ThiDnin* Edwards, of Plains, died last evening at the family home after a short illness of pneumonia. Besides her husband she Is survived by eight children. She was a devout member of Sacred Heart church, and had hundreds of friends. The funerul will be held on Monday morning at 10 o'clock from the home. The coroner, county detective and the jury were totally disappointed at the conclusion of the Inquest to And that the testimony of the witnesses examined was but a repetition of the various stories that appeared In the newspapers dally since the occurrence of the tragedy. Pan Fallon, the principal witness. who was the closest friend of Thomas Dougherty, and who, It was expected, would give considerable testimony to the jurors, did not prove a very valuable witness, and. in fact, yielded very little Information. Owing to the lack of evidence the Jury was unable to decide upon a verdict and it was deemed necessary to adjourn until some time next week, when the district attorney will be asked to be present and several new witnesses will be examined. Now York, Nov. 17.—Senator T. C. Piatt will resign his seat In the United States Senate on the first of January. The paramount reason why the Senator has no*, sent in his resignation sooner Is the bitter hostility felt by him toward Governor Higgins. This is caused principally by the governor's refusal to appro.•« the excise bill granting a license to Hotel Gotham, the proprietor of which. Prank Hennett, is a life-long friend of Senator Piatt. Jerome la Determined. "Don't laugh at me." said the district attorney, turning upon one of the first defendants who came to the bur and smiled at Mr. Jerome. "I will break the neck of gambling in New York state or It will break wine." In November lust the prlnC-e was reported to have iieen confined in a fortress for ten days, the result ot grossly insulting his lute tutor. Majot Levnsseur. Iu December, MHM, Prince tieorge eloped with un actress of the Nutlonul theater and went to Vienna, where they were found drinking in a oafe in the midst of a band of gypsies. SIGXOIt CARUSO. Caruso, slu suid, followed and repeated his of fensive action. Convinced that his at tentions were not accidental, she stll hesitated. She was preparing to ieavC the place when the nction was ugair repeated. This time she spoke sharp!} to the singer, saying: Joseph Jennings, of Moosic, an apprentice In the Touhill Iron works, was struck by a heavy weight yesterday and seriously hurt. He Is suffering from internal injuries. Jennings was removed to the State hospital.MoohIc Man Injured. Home 180 prisoners were before the court. The most of these poolroom prisoners were merely employees and. refusing to plead guilty, were Immediately served with graud jury subpoenas for examination. Bather than submit to that they changed their pleas lu every case and were fined $2T, in most cases for the first offense, with severe punishment awaiting a second offense. The immediate resignation of Piatt, whether brought about by increasing physical Infirmities, marital troubles or through any other reason, would place Governor Higgins in the tactical position of having the power of appointing his successor. Such an appointment would work almost Incalculable benefit to the man so appointed In a contest In the Legislature for election. In July, 190», not long after the accession of King I'eter, it wus stated in a dispatch from St. Petersburg that a specialist In the treatment of back ward children had, at the command ot the Imperial government, examined and observed Prince George and had reported to J£miDcror Nicholas that tbs prince was a degenerate. 'You must not do that again.' HUNTER KILLED. At tile M. P. ('liurcli A moment before Policeman Kane who had been watching Caruso evei since he first took up a position clost to Mrs. Graham, had walked over tC the railing next to her little boy and by leaning forward had observed ev cry motion of the tenor. Mr. Metzgar left his home, in company with a nephew, to hunt in a piece of timber land on his own farm. In leaving the cleared land to go into the timber tract Mr. Metzgar cruwltd through a wire fence. He was on the opposite of the fence, in a clump of bushes, and dragged his gun, a single barrel breech loader, after him. The weapon became caught In the bushes. Mr. Metzgar, who had hold of the muzzle, tugged to loosen it and the trigger was pulled and the gun discharged. The load struck the unfortunate man below the left shoulder blade and Inlllcted a terrible wound. It went off at close runge and burned clothing and liesh. Paris of the man's garments were forced by ihe impact of the shot into ihe wound, which bled profusely. Ur. Howeler. of 8aD- lorshurg, wus hurried to attend the wounded man, kul found him dead when he reached the place. Miss Margaret Wintringer, of Chicago, will deliver an address at the Sunday morning service in the Methodist Protestant church. One unexpected feature of the inquest is the fact that Katie Burke. In whose, compi'-y Dougherty was when he received tlv fatal wound nnd who is suspected of knowing more about the case than she is willing to tell, did not appear to be sworn before the Jury. She was perfectly willing tA go on the stand, but Attorneys C. P. o'Malley and Frank K. Hoyle. who were present in her Interest, were opposed to It. As her nume was called by Coroner Stein, Attorney o'Malley got up and laid the law before the Jury which provides that a suspected person In a case of this character can refuse to testify at the Inquest. "She Is perfectly willing lo come before the Jury." said Attorney O'Malley. "but we will not allow her to do so." Much Muck to B* Raked at Frleee. Mrs. Mary Devaney, of Wilkesbarre, appeared in surety court at Wlikesbarre, this morning, against her husband, Daniel Devaney, charging him with non-support. Mrs. Devaney claimed that her husband was a shiftless character and did not assist in supporting the five children of which they are the parents. A separation was agreed upon. Kau Francisco, Nov. 17.—"What we have already done is only a starter. We expect that there will be other Indlctments liefore the tinish. All tbat I now ask is fair juries to try the eases." The call for the meeting was issued by the Civil Service Keform association of Luzerne county, of which T. Mr. Jerome made an extended speech during tbe court proceedings. Burglars ransacked the bairber shop of Peter'Schmaltz, In Hughestown. Thursday night. All the shaving materials In sight were taken away. A supply of barber's tools was being sold in Duryea today, and an effort is being made to llnd who had the goods for sale. Ing her little boy along. . He heard Mrs. Graham rebuke Caruso and pluc ed the latter under arrest. Peter Metzgar, a well known farmed 'of Kinkletown, Uldred township, Monroe county, accldentally shot himself dead on Wednesday. All tbat I now ask is fair juries to try the eases." This statement, ominous to those who have dabbled In the wholesale municipal graft being exposed in tbls city, was made by Assistant District Attorney Heney following au important decision by Judge Beawell.
