H„ Nov. 9.—Unofficial returns from every city and town iii New Hampshire Indicate that the voters failed by the narrow margiu of ten to elect a governor. The state law requires that the successful candidate receive a majority over the other candidates, and Charles M. Floyd of Manchester, the Republican nominee, fulls short just ten votes of receiving the needed majority. At? the Intersection of the back road with u road leading from Avoca thfere is a * hill containing a large outcropping of coal, that is only a short distance btflow the surface. The Pennsylvania Coal Co. has had the mining rights of the property for some time past. The coal lay undisturbed, however, because of the difficulty of preparing and shipping it, there being no Pennsylvania works near or convenient to the section, which is cut up mainly into farm land. Paris Newspapers. at Wilkesbarre Issue Plurality. Country by Wireless. Washington, Nov. 0.—"Goodby! 1 am going down to see how the dlteb is getting along!" shouted President Roosevelt uu be stood on the after starboard deck of the yacht Mayflower at the Washington navy yard as the vessel was leaving the dock with the president for his Panama trip. Paris, Nov. 9.—The final word In the divorce proceedings brought by the Countess de Casteilane against bei husband was Mai try Bonnet's assurance of Count Boni's undying affection for bis wife and the demand that the case be adjourned for a fortnight in order to give the countess an opportunity to reflect upon the advisability of a reconciliation. This the court re fused and adjourned for one week, when its decision—either the ordering of an inquiry or the granting of a divorce—will be banded down. Warrants for Election Of» New York, Nov. 9.—With the official vote of but three counties missing Lewis Stuyvesunt Cbanler apparently Is elected lieutenant governor on the Democratic and Independence league tickets by a plurality approximating 1,700 votes over M. Linn Bruce (Hep.). Unless the official result, which will not be compiled until next week, shows a change the legislature will be called upon to name the next governor. fleers in Hazle Township The unofficial figures from every city and town in the state show the following totals: Floyd (Rep.), 40,318; .lameson (Dera.), 37,5:24; Telley (Pro.), 2,113; McFall (Soc.). 888; Churchill, 2. To arrive at these tigures Bruce'8 probable pluralities in the counties of Essex, Ontario and Niagara are bused on the vote for the Republican gubernatorial candidate. Fulton county is also missing, excepting a statement of Bruee's plurality over Chauler. While slight changes may be made in the returns from several counties, it is not believed they will materially reduce .Chanler's lead, but, on the contrary, Increase it. Accompanying the president are Mrs. Roosevelt and lier maid, Surgeon General Itixey of the navy and M. C. Latta, one of the assistant secretaries at the White House. xss Ballot Boxes Opened in The vote shows a plurality of 2,994 for Floyd, but It lacks ton votes to give him n majority and the election. If these returns prove correct the legislature will decide between the two candidates receiving the highest vote. Unless the unexpected happens Mr. Floyd will be the choice of the legislature, which is Uepublleau by a majority of 100. Court and Found Empty. The Mayflower took the party to Wolf Trap light, at the mouth of the Kapphannock liver In Chesapeake bay, where a transfer was made to the battleship Louisiana, which is to convey the president to and from the isthmus. After much figuring- the company hag struck on tt novel plan for the preparation of the coal and the stripping will be commenced as soon as possible. Inside workings of the JJarnum mine extend close to the place where the hill 1s located. ThC?s-» have been abandoned but the old gangways will be repaired for use and and tracks will be laid In them. The plan will then be to atrip the coal on the surface and send It through the tunnel to the old workings, whence It will be hauled to the foot of one the Barnum shafts and lifted to tl\. surface. It will be prepared In Barnum breaker. The new plan seems a reversal of the usual order of mining, the coal being secured on the surface and then sent Into the mine, to oe taken out again a mile away, but It shows the science of present day mining. The court proceedings were conflned largely to tilts between opposing counsel over tlje charges made against Edtuond Kelly of counsel for the countess. Mr. Kelly has denied these charges indignantly and makes th.» counter charge that the count himself hatched up a conspiracy for the purpose of making his wife believe that he (Kelly) had organized a plot to bring about the count's political destruction.iThe election on November 6th. 1906. will go down In Luzerne county's history as an exhibition of the most daring election frauds ever committed in the county. The attention of the four judges was occupied today in examining election officers who had been summoned to appear. Court room No. 1 was crowded to Its capacity with politicians from all over the county, and almost every attorney at the bar was present. The official count of the returns was temporarily, suspended, and will not be continued until tomorrow, at least. Intense Interest was manifest by all present, as sensation after sensation was brought out. Election officers apparently threw all sense of integrity to the winds, and gave scarcely any attention to the election laws. ballot box was placed in charge of John Scott, the judge of election. He claimed that he learned Simon Newberger and Scott had been together and that he could not be Implicated In any political fraud. Republican Headquarters Hopeful, President and Mrs. Iioosevelt arrived at the navy yard and were met by Secretary Loeb, Captain Leutze, the commandant of the yard, and Captain Long of the Mayflower. As the band aboard the ship played "The Star Spangled Banner" and the bugle sounded they walked down the gaugplauk aboard the Mayflower. At Uepublleau headquarters Chairman Woodruff was not prepared to give out any statement, but it was stated that the official canvass of the vote of the city of Greater New York may show enough changes in favor of Bruce to overcome Chauler's apparent lead. Prothonotary Templeton was then sworn and said that he received the Poster township returns at 8 o'clock by appointment, but did not know who- the parties were that brought them. Chicago, Nov. 9.—Prohibitionists at national headquarters in this city are congratulating themselves upon the excellent showing which they say the Prohibitionists made in the different states Tuesday. Charles It. Jones, the chairman of the national Prohibition committee, said that the total vote of the party in the different states will exceed ."{25,000, whereas the total for Swallow for presideut in 1004 was 257,419. Prohibition Party Gaining Ground. Creditor* Seeking Payment. At the conclusion of the hearing Judge Halsey. who had been active In the examination of both witnesses, said: It appears that all the other candidates on the Democratic state ticket are elected by safe pluralities. Louisiana Ready For Emergencies. The argument In the creditors' case was opened by Maitre Millerand, who claimed that the lion's share of the money Involved was owing to tradesmen. It is stated upon authority that this claim will be contested by the countess' attorneys, who are said to be settling all legitimate bills. The Louisiana will be convoyed to and from the isthmus by the armored cruisers Tennessee and Washington. Aboard the Louisiana is Lieutenant Frank Evans, son of Hear Admiral "Fighting Bob" Evans, who will utilize the wireless telegraph apparatus, with which the ship Is equipped, for communication with the White House at Washington whenever the president desires it. In this way the public will lie accurately Informed of the movements of the ships. Secretary I.oeb will give to the press dispatches from the president. "Upon information made here and the testimony in the case up to this time, the court directs that the clerk of courts issue warrants for John Scott and Simon Newberger for the crime of forgery and such other offenses as may appear In violation of the election laws and place the same In the hands of the sheriff to serve at once." Mr. Hearst appears to have run from 55,000 to 00,000 behind the remainder of the Democratic-Independence league ticket. Says Moran Will Try Again. WJork has been started on the new tunnel and it will be* completed with all speed. Squads are also working In the old Barnum gangwuys, preparing them for use again. Preparations are being made for the commencement of the stripping work, but It cannot be stated definitely when the first coal will be cut and prepared for market. /The board in the Ninth district. Hazle township was held under $1,000 bail to answer charges of forgery and misdemeanor of office. Fully a dozen warrants were ordered Issued by the judges on the bench, among the number being papers for the arrest of 'Squire McKelvey, of Hazle township, and a prominent merchant of Freeland named Newberger. The Democratic-Independence league candidates on the state ticket, besides Mr. Hearst, were as follows: Lewis Stuyvesant Chanler, for lieutenant governor; William S, Jackson, for attorney general; Frederick Skene, foi state engineer and surveyor; John S. Whalen, for secretary of state; Martin H. tilynn, for comptroller; Julius Hauser, for state treasurer. Boston, Nov. 9.—District Attorney John B. Moran, who was defeated for governor, has arrived from New York much refreshed by two days of absolute rest. He refused to comment on the result of the election, but intimated that a statement regarding it might be issy id in a day or two. Timothy W. Coakk . one of Mr. Moran's advisers, states Aiat Mr. Moran will be a candidate for governor next year. It Is reported that the final rupture between the count and countess was caused by a rldleuous attempt of De Castellane to win her sympathy by making her believe -that he was dying slowly of a cancer of the breast. When \he count's trick was exposed his wife became disgusted aud left hint. The opening of the ballot bo* at the hearing of the Upper Lehigh district of Foster township capped the climax of the fraud when the judges ordered the ballot box opened. Everybody was surprised as it was practically empty. The seal had been broken, the box unlocked and every Indication that It had been tampered with was apparent from the outside. Get your furnace repaired. Ash The Louisiana has been equipped with a thirty foot uousinkable and noncapsizable lifeboat, jvhich Is supplied with provisions and water for six days and is to be manned by twelve picked men in case of mishap. Count de Castellane's piteous love letters and pleus to his countess have exposed hint to the eyes of the fashionable world in a most contemptible light, and he is being lampooned un mercifully In the press. The hearings in several of the cases started this morning finished this afternoon, but no disposition was made of the cases. About two o'clock officers of the Butler township district. Upper Lehigh, were called to the witness stand and testified that discrep- MCtw»»rK exleted—in Dhe -return sheets shown them on the stand. Finally the ballot box of the district was shown them, and they admitted that the sealing tape was not ln_ the same condition they had left It. Judge Lynch then ordered the Inspector to open the box in full view of the court. This he did, unlocking the padlock wfth his key and tearing off the tape which had been sealed across the opening. To the astonlshmeijt of all, there was not a single thing in the ballot box. Judge Lynch immediately ordered the clerk of the courts to issue a warrant for the arrest of William Rainer, the judge of election. He also directed the district attorney to issue a warrant for the arrest of a Freeland merchant named Newberger, and ascertain, if he waH the same named in the cases heard this morning. The North district of Hanover township was next callcd, and an examination of the tally sheets showed deliberate attempts to erase and change figures. This case is still on as the Gazette goes to press. To Count Protested Ballots. Five Day Excursion to New York Via Lehigh Valley R. H„ fare *4.35. Declaring that the Republicans were trying to steal the election from the Democratic candidates by withholding returns and adding enough to the vote to overcome the Democratic pluralities in this city, William J. Conuers, Democratic state chairman, sent out a call for a meeting of the state committee in this city. The purpose of the meeting is to take measures to protect the Democratic vote and to see that the Democrats are represented in every county in the state where the county canvassing boards meet next Tuesday. C. Election officers apparently threw all sense of integrity to the winds, and gave scarcely any attention to the election laws. ballot box was placed in charge of John Scott, the judge of election. He also directed the district attorney to issue a warrant for the arrest of a Freeland merchant named Newberger, and ascertain, if he waH the same named in the cases heard this morning.
