Artwell agreed yesterday to waive his right lo fight extradition and as soon as he did so Chief Loftus arranged to leave Cleveland without delay.Alarmed by Fines. This was sentence day in the Luzerne court and Judge Lynch who presided pronounced the words that gave a couple of upper Luzerne county men a ticket of admission to the county jflil. William Jims, of Carroll street, 'who was convicted Friday afternootj on the charge of Impersonating a detective .'Hid playing a holdup game on young&coupies who strolled along the Ion# end of Susquehanna avenue, Wewt Plttaton, was among those sentenced this morning. When Jims was called before the court this morning Judge Lynch gave him some straightforward talk, saying among other things that the crime which he had committed was a low, contemptible one; that while technically it was not considered robbery, yet it was nothing less than a bold highway hold-up. However, inasmuch as this was the first case of its kind that had been tried before this court under the Act of 1897, lie would be lenient with him. Judge Lynch then sentenced Jims to a fine of $rD00, the costs of the case and six months in the county jail. Jims' attorney appealed to the judge for leniency In the case, pleading that the man had a wife and two children to support, but the judge replied there were lots of men In similar circumstances hut they didn't have to resort to highway hold-ups. New York, Sept. 23.—Syndicate operations of the Equitable Life Assurance Hoclety were taken up by the insurance Investigating committee and consumed the entire session. Henry K. Whithrop, assistant secretary and financial manager of that society, was called to the stand and presented and swore to a record of syndicate participations of his company, also to a record of sales and purchases of securities for the past five years. He detailed as far as he was able the transactions of the syndicate of "J. H. Hyde and associates" and took memoranda of all information he was unable to supply, which is to be presented at a later date. Havana, Sept. 23.—Murders, If not a massacre, followed an attempt of the police of Cienfuegos to search Congressman Enrique Vlilueudas' room in the Hotel Suizo for arms. The congressman, who was leader of the Liberal party, was killed after be or one of his henchmen had shot to death Police Chief 1118111*, and at least two other men, both policemen, met death in the battle that followed. It was thought that a week inigCht be consumed before he could be legally taken from the state but the officials finally persuaded him to go peacefully. One of the strongest agents In persuading him to make this move was the fact that he had spent a very uncomfortable night in one of the precinct station houses of Cleveland the night after his arrest. He was then removed to the county Jail, which he said he found comfortable. When Chief Loftus arrived in Cleveland he was again taken back to the precinct station and was told he would have to remain there until requisition papers could be received. Rather than undergo the uncomfortable conditions lie had experienced he decided to come east without trouble. A crowd of Knights of Columbus from unhyphenated Wllkesbarre came to this city yesterday afternoon for the purpose of lining up on the base ball diamond against the Plttston team, composed of doughty knights of the local council. Tin- score 16 to 12 with the Pittstonians at the 16 end tells a brief of tbe game. That the score was not 16 to 1 was due entirety to .some unpleasant memories of a bygone political event In the minds of a few Plttston players. The contest was witnessed by a large number of knights from this cty and from the county seat. It was marked by such "rooting" as would make a college game look like something very small Indeed. The contest from beginning to end was of a very exciting nature. it could not be called a pitchers' battle nor yet was it a swatting contest. There seems no stereotyped phraser that fits the game exactly. It was something entirely unique in base ball annals. For one thing we believe it was the first time that a cave hole was tbe chief factor in a home run. Then It iu a most unusual thing for a home run batter to be retired for racing around the Macks on a single hit and assisting a couple of single-basers to cross the plate in safety. It is an extratordinary event to hear of an umpire being bought on the open field. Who ever heard of P. A. O'Boyle striking out before? Yet all these things happened. Anthony Pflngsten, of this city, who was convicted of a similar charge, was called for sentence but failed lo put in an appearance. Judge Lynch ordered that Pflngsten's bail be forfeited. and that a capias be Issued for his arrest. John Luca, of Krogtown, this city, is Pflngsten's bondsman, in the sum of $500. Artwell Is still In the Water street jail, pending a commitment to the county jail. He will be taken to Wllkesbarre this evening and confined awaiting a hearing before. Alderman Barrett, by whom the warrant was Issued. Chief Loftus would not state vvba_t Artwell had said to him concerning the crime. Cienfuegos last night was a sealed city. The government closed the wires to all save official dispatches, refusing to let even the relatives of the dead Liberal leader or those of the murdered chief of police receive Information as to the disposition of the bodies. It was evident from the mystery the authorities here tried to throw about the tragedy that the trouble was more thun a mere defense of Villuendas by his friends. Two dyuauiite bombs were found in the congressman's room, the official advices said, and the government admitted it had planted a cordon of guards about the whole block containing tlie hotel in which the fatal shooting occurred. 113 71 V* Can Pacific Ches & Ohio St Paul . . . 113 71 V* Can Pacific Ches & Ohio St Paul . . .
