Correspondence of the Preebyterlan. POMPEII. TERMS OF PUBLICATION. T!ie PiTTsroff if published every Thursday morning by G. M Richakt in the "Gaiette Building," nest Hide of Main Street, at $3.00 per annum. l\ Jane, 18t7. Messrs. Editors : As we approached the bay of Naples, near which Pompeii is situated, we were reminded by our surroundings that we were drawing near to Bible land*. We found the roofs of the houses fiat, and on one occasion, when we stopped for refreshment, we took our dinneron the top of the house. As we looked on the wheat fields, we saw the gleaners following the reapers, as in the days ot Bath and Boas. The vine and fig tree and olive tree cover the hills. The dry weather had commenced—and the people, as the son went down, were busy drawing water for their gardens and their fields. Troughs, artificisly arranged, carried water to the thirty plants. Lodges, to protect the keepers of the gardens and vineyards from the sun, nestled among the vines. We imagined the harvest fields ripe for the sickle, unusually white, and the thresing floors, which take the place of barns, just as the one at which Oman, the Jebusite, saw the angel. FANCY GOODS, tion. It was, a* some old writers have inti mated C the fasnionable resort of Bo mans of rank and wealth, who were inclined to spend their time in boths, arid circuses, and amphitheatres,a city in which the people lived simply to enjoy themselves, and where the enjoyments were not of a high order. Of more unblushing lewdness than was practised here, judging from evidence that abounds in these street and houses, we can scarcely conceive. That they were overtaken with the doom of Sodom and Gomorrah , is not strange. Of the circumstances connected with the destruction of this and the surrounding cities, we are of course comparatively ignorant. How much warning the people had of the coming destruction ; to what extent they were able to make their escape acd carry away their goods ; and how long the eruption continued, are questions that cannt now be answered satisfactorily —the assurance of guides, who claim to know everything, to the contrary notwithstanding.— The younger Pliny, in two letters to Tacitus, quoted in the "Guide Books," describes the sulden appearance of a cloud, which rose in the afternoon of August 21, A. D. 79, over Vesuvius, shooting upward to a great height, and spreading out at the top lika a pine tree ; and succeeding this appearance, the precipitation of showers of ashes and cinders, which filled the atmosphere, producing intense darkness that continued to thi) third day. The probabilities are that the destruction was not so sudden as to cut off all escape from the city. A large proportion of the inhabitants, we apprehend, did escape from the city, and this will account for the fact that so few bodies are found among the 'the ruins. Around a large building attached to the amphitheatre, apparently a kind of barracks for soldiers, were found some sixty.human skeletons, and the presumption ia that they were sobers who were on guard at the time of the eruption, and "would not desert their postf while others were making their escape. Bat while ' a large portion of the inhabitant may have Arid from the city when the eruption commenced, it is by no means certain that they escaped destruction. Without (peculating further on what may have been the state of things here eighteen centuries ago, allow me to speak of what I saw. It was on the morning of the 10th of June that we started from Naples to visit the buried, or rather exhumed city, where we arrived after a drive of from two to three hours, over a street rnnning in a sooth easterly direction, between Vesuvius and the sea. We had taken a guide with us, and had simply to pay an entrance fee of two francs apiece, and we were admitted to the city. We entered by what is known as the "Street of the Tombs," near which are the graves of some distinguished Roman'families.— This street, I should judge, is from seven hundred to a thousand feet long, and fully opened to the pavement, in which are the deeply worn ruts made by chariots that Tolled over it two thousand years ago. The housss are of stone and brick, for the most par^low—notover two stories. Th'e streets are narrow, and ran at right angles to each other) much as the streets of Philadelphia.' In the first house we entered near the gate, we found an immense cellar, in which there were several hundred wine jars, each of which would contain half a barrel of wine. Into this cellar, apparently, the family living in the house had fled daring the storm of ashes for protection, and h*d there perished, as several human skeletons were found here when the building was first uncovered. The houses, so far as uncovered, are for the most , part constructed after the same general plan.— The front room were occupied as shops, and : in the back roons and upper sttfries the pro*? prietors of the houses lived. The rooms of .,the , houses are small. This is especially true of the sleeping rooms and kitchens. The floors of many of the. booses are covered with Mosaic 1"^5 work, and on tbe walls there are paintings, nsome of whieh evince artistic skill of a high order, and morality of an order not so high. Tffe were taken into the liouse of Sallust, evilfently one ofihe most elegant of which the city could boast. The public build ings of the city, such as the temples, courts of justice, prisob, amphitheatres, circus and theatre, although in ruin, are indicative of wealth and artistic taste. The statues by which these public buildings were surrounded and their grounds ornamented, have been mostly carried away, but there are D . those remaining that would do credit to any age. The buiiding pointed out as the public bath interested me. In the first room entered which is very large, persons waited "their w turn." In the second room they disrobed and hungup their clothes. In the nextjihere is an immense bathing tub, with seats arranged in it and a furnace attached to it for supplying warm 15"'v' water. There is still another room, wanned -t by the furnace,'into which the bathers enter to be "rubbed down," anointed and dressed. We wandered tor several hours through these wonderful ruins, so eloquent of an age and a people who have passed away, and watched the laborers carrying on their work of uncovering ., the city. Moveable articles of value or of special interest that are ibund in prosecution of their work, are taken eharge ef by government officials, who superintend the excavations, and removed to the museum in Naples, where tiysy are properly arranged and preserved. In this museum I was shown a golden lamp taken from these ruins, weighing nearly two pounds; - also specimens of almost evey article of food used on the table, such as bread, cakes, honey, eggs, nuts, and fruits of almost every variety, and articles of dress, silks, and laces, and writing material. Articles of jewelry also abound, such as golden finger rings and ear-rings and bracelets and necklaces. Some of these were on the bodies of those who have been exhumed, One room in the museum is filled with bronfee statues taken from Pompeii and Herculaueum, some of which, in fineness ol finish and powe of expression, are equal to any thing of the kind we have seen in Europe. In her right hand she dragged an old hoop, which she had taken from a dilapidated flour barrel, while with her left she was rubbing her red, swollen eyes. She was in deep grief and was sobbing painfully. He stopped his child, and asked what was the matter. And out came the wallet, and the money was handed over with a warm genial smile. To a reflective mind, there are few more impressive scenes than that which is spread around the traveller who stands among the ruins of Pompeii. In one direction he looks off on the Mediterranean, whose waters were stirred by Cffisar's ships, and by boats of pleasure parties & from this city, more then eighteen hundred centuries ago. To the north Vesuvius lifts his bead,or rather heads, for the mountain seems divided near the summit—four or feet high—once all beautiful with clustering vines and smiling villas, and now a vast heap of ashes and Scoria, and as barren as the desert of Sahara. At the command of him whom the mountains obey, it had poured forth its sulphurous fire and lava, blotting out for a time the sun from the sky; and spreading desolation and death in every direction. Within these old houses that have been and are still being uncovered, had once been. heard the music of children's voices and children's feet. Hero gladiators had fought and died, for the amusement of those who once crowded into the ampitheatre. Here, no doubt, men had given their lives in testimony of the truth as it is in Jesus. This theatre had witnessed the gathering of thousands of pleasure-seekere, and the same is true of the circus. Then all went merry as " a marriage belL" Now all is quiet. It the stillness of death and decay. N.G.P. gT. LAWRENCE HOTEL, CENTAL BOOK AND MUSIC STORE ! OPPOSITE. The sea, and the Hood of lava that flowed to the sea, and the intense darkness, must in a great measure have cut off their es- Office on Main St., above Z. Bennett's Store. OPPOSITE.
