New York, Nov. 9.—Roosevelt's viotory did not diminish in any degree over night. On the contrary, it lias grown bigger. Later and fuller returns from everywhere show that the victory of the Republican party was one of the most astonishing in America's political history. The candidacies of Watson and Debs probably contributed to the crushing defeat of the Democrats, but to what extent is not yet known. Roosevelt ■will probably have 325 votes in the electoral college and Parker 151. Roosevelt has every northern state and apparently has captured Mary land, which was thought last night to have gone Democratic by a small plurality. Parker secures the lowest electoral vote of any Democratic candidate since Greeley's time. Every doubtful state falls into line in the Republican column, and, to the surprise of the Republicans themselves, by tremendous pluralities. Another surprise in the election is the fact that several northern states, notably Massachusetts and Minnesota, elected Democratic governors in the face of astonishing pluralities for Roosevelt.' Minnesota gave Roosevelt 100,- 000 plurality but seems to have elected Johnson, Dernocrat, for governor, by 10,000. Ring rule in the state disgusted many Republicans and caused the upset. In Massachusetts, Roosevelt had 75,000 plurality, but William L. Douglass, Democrat, was elected governor. Colorado is close, but the latest returns Indicate that Adams, Democrat, has probably defeated Peabody, Republican, for governor. Roosevelt carries the state by 3,000 plurality. The honor of having the largest popular vote ever given any national candidates has fallen to Roosevelt and Fairbanks. In many of the states the national ticket ran ahead ot McKlnley's vote four years ago. The tidal wave bowled over a number of Congressional and legislative candidates In this city who seemed assured of election In the New York state house of representatives the Republican majority is doubled. T'ne greatest fight was waged for Congress, between Dale, Republican, and Howell, Democrat. The former won by a majority of over 2,000. Esopus, N. Y., Nov. 9.—Alton B. Parker spent the morning quietly clearing up four months' work about bis villa, after which he began the active management of his farm. He was cheerful, almost Jovial and no one unacquainted with the man and the people's verdict yesterday would have known that he had gone through a great political adversity.
