Today is Mitchell Day, the anniversary of the termination of the strike of 1902, and it was fittingly celebrated this morning by the members of the United Mine Workers of America in all the anthracite districts, N03. 1, 7 and 9. In district No. I the entire force of mine workers concentrated in Wilkeslbarre and in a mighty array did honor to the young leader, who displayed his remarkable ability in leading them successfully through two industrial 'battles, among the greatest of their'kind in the world. The chief feature of the day was the parade, which was held about noon and in which 30,000 mine workers participated. It was the greatest labor concourse ever seen in this region and was witnessed by thousands of peopls who lined the streets along the entire line of march and lustily applauded at opportunity. John Dempset. secretary-treasurer of District No. 1, was grand marshal and was assisted by a large force of aides, who kepit an excellent line of march notwithstanding the great number of men participating in the parade. Heading the parade a squad of 12 mounted policemen rode and were followed by the grand marshal and his %taff, mounted. Alexander's Ninth regiment band was the first musical organization in line and •was followed directly by th» rest of the parade. There was some delay in getting the great throng into lino and the parade did not start until noon. It extended over three miles in length and took over an hour to pass a given point. Over 70 musical organizations enlivened the air with music. After marching over several of the principal streets the marchers crossed the Market street bridge and proceeded UJ Y. M. C. At the conclusion of the specchmaking those, who had attended the mas» meeting returned to Wilkesbarre and the streets of the county seat again presented a highly animated scene. Most of the stores were decorated with the national colors and the picture of John Mitchell was to be seen frequently. It was a great day and a great celebration, of which * the. mine workers may feel justly proud.
