Plttston. Disappears with Valuables. West Africans Surprise Portuguese Attorney W. J. Goeckel, of Wilkesbarre, has the police looking for a college mate, John F. Baumert, who robbed him. Baumert appeared in Wilkesbarre several days ago. He had l»een a friend of Mr. Goeckel at a Buffalo college 18 years ago, and the men had not met since they left college. Goeckel showed his guest a good time, and when Baumert told him he had lost $40 through a hole in his clothes he readily endorsed a check for $25 made out by Baumert on a New York city bank. This morning, Baumert arose before Vhe members of the Goeckel family and told the servant that he was going out for a walk. When he failed to return an investigation was made, and it was discovered that Mr. Goeckel's brand new overcoat and some valuable silverware were missing. It has since been learned that Baumert has served several yn-jrs in a Maryland penitentiary for hotel thefts. Punitive Expedition. Lisbon, Oct.^j.—A detachment of 500 Portuguese troops belonging to n col unm operating in Portuguese West Africa against the Cuanhainas was surprised by the tribesmen while crossing the Cunene river and lost 254 killed (including fifteen officers) and fifty wounded. , The troops were part of a punitive expedition sent to Portuguese West Africa because of the threatening attitude of the natives there. A mother cat belonging to a family on Market street a few days ago gave birth to four kittens, three of which were fastened together much in the same manner as the famous twins. A reconnaisance by six Russian squadrons yesterday revealed the fact that a small Japanese infantry detachment had advanced to the vicinity of Saliochese. Some hours of desultory firing followed, ending in the retirement of bQth side&. The Japanese were also discovered to the south. Brisk skirmishing resulted in the Japanese retiring, leaving a few dead. The Russians took three prisoners and captured some ammunition. The Japanese pursued the Russians for five versts. Sentence on Duncan was suspended and lie was turned over to the Alabama authorities to be taken to Birmingham, where he was convicted of the murder of two policemen and sentenced to hang. Plttston. Disappears with Valuables. West Africans Surprise Portuguese Attorney W. J. Goeckel, of Wilkesbarre, has the police looking for a college mate, John F. Baumert, who robbed him. Baumert appeared in Wilkesbarre several days ago. He had l»een a friend of Mr. Goeckel at a Buffalo college 18 years ago, and the men had not met since they left college. Goeckel showed his guest a good time, and when Baumert told him he had lost $40 through a hole in his clothes he readily endorsed a check for $25 made out by Baumert on a New York city bank. This morning, Baumert arose before Vhe members of the Goeckel family and told the servant that he was going out for a walk. When he failed to return an investigation was made, and it was discovered that Mr. Goeckel's brand new overcoat and some valuable silverware were missing. It has since been learned that Baumert has served several yn-jrs in a Maryland penitentiary for hotel thefts. Punitive Expedition. Lisbon, Oct.^j.—A detachment of 500 Portuguese troops belonging to n col unm operating in Portuguese West Africa against the Cuanhainas was surprised by the tribesmen while crossing the Cunene river and lost 254 killed (including fifteen officers) and fifty wounded. , The troops were part of a punitive expedition sent to Portuguese West Africa because of the threatening attitude of the natives there.
