Pirro, on South Main street, when a large num'ber of the friends of Vito Bianco, the well known Italian merchant, came together to celebrate the event of his receiving a commission as notary public. Many invitations had been sent out and they were very generally responded to. Among those present were a delegation of Italian newspaper men from New York, prominent Italians throughout this valley, city officials, including-Mayor Langan, Chief of Police Ijoftus, Alderman Barrett and others. S. J. Freeman and Mr. Schw'artzkopf were also among those present. A choice dinner was served, with ail the delicacies of the season, after which speeches were made in Italian and English. The Columbus band was present and rendered a choice programme of music. It was early morning before the gathering broke up and Alderman Barrett was escorted to his home by the band. London, Sept. 12.—The Dally Telegraph's correspondent, Mr. Simpson, who was with the Russians at Liaoyung, reports that he has been captured by the Japanese. A little Greenwood girl by the name of Murray had her leg cut off 'by an electric car on the Scranton- Avoca line last evening about 6 o'clock and died eaTly this morning. She was playing on the track and was run down, the leg being cut off near the hip. "It must be said for the Japanesethrft, although they fight with the utmost" fierceness, daring and courage, they battle not like madmen, but with their heads, and they obey their otli cers in all straits." He asserts that It was Kuroki's dangerous position that compelled the other Japanese armies to force the fighting and says that it was partly the shell tire and partly also Russian incendiarism that produced the conflagration in the iUisrtlan quarter of Liaoyang, the inceni'iarism probably being the act of drunken soldiers. The Japanese soldier calmly left Redoubt 1, carrying two boxes, and deliberately marched toward the Russians, who suffered him to approach. When lie was quite near sharpshooters killed him.
