Woman Shot by a Relative Who Was BEER Left Wing of Russian Army Meets Playing With a Revolver. Here's a special bargain to open school days with Tokyo, Sept. 5.—Few of General Kuropatkin's soldiers have been able to go north of the Yenthai caiil mines, and General Kuroki's army, \™?eh RUcceed- St. Petersburg. Sept. 5.—General Kuropntkln, under date of Saturday night at 7 o'clock,-has sent a report to the emperor which, in part, is made public by the general staff. The report indicates the complete defeat of the Kussi.'in left wing by General Kuroki, and leaves in doubt the exact position of the Russian right and center. With Heavy Loss. New York, Sept. 5.—Penned in a burning tenement with every avenue of escape cut off by the flames or unless at best, fourteen persons were killed and twenty injured in a lire which wrecked the live story double tenement 164 Attorney street. Sfi iess than half an hour from the time the blaze was discovered it was extinguished, but the interval was so crowded with exciting incidents that even the firemen could not give a coherent account of what happened. Stratford, Conn.. Sept. 5. — Adam Stalnack accidentally shot and killed Mrs. Matis Bonlck while visiting Mrs. Bonick's family. Stalnack picked up one of Mi's. At U o'clock last night General Nodzu's central army was still attacking the retreating Russian forces hoUllug the hills north and northwest of Liaoyang. General Oku's division had In greater part crossed the Tai river farther to the west, and unless General Kuroki.should be defeated or compelled to retire to the position lie held on last Friday night it Is extremely probable that several brigades of General Kuropatkin's army will be unable to make Mukden. The national representatives of the employees were in conference till late last night. It was considered alfiioat certain on Saturday night that iMr. Belmont's proposition would meet the approval of the three chiefs, especially as it was understood to embody practically the suggestion of the labor leaders themselves. Many hours had not passed, however, before it became that the leaders were spending a great deal more time in deliberation than it would require merely to formulate a favorable reply. He shot the revolver several times in the air, and Mrs. Bonick, attracted by the unusual noise, went to the back yard and found Stalnack holding her son on his left arm while in his right hand he held a pistol. She implored him to seek some other means of amusing her won. and lie replied by shooting an other time in the air. Then Mrs. Bonick approached liim and attempted to prevent him from shooting again by taking hold of his arm. The following is the full text of the report: "Today (Sept. 3.) the greater part of the Russian army, including the First Siberian army corps, is occupying positions south of the branch railway from Yentai station to the Yentai An elegant quality with double knee, comes in all sizes, and guaranteed good wearers. Marshal Oyanta has telegraphed that' General Kuroki had swung his most northerly division westward to the railway, but had left a reserve force, believed to be sufficient, at Sntbuago to protect his right flank from any attack by General Kuropatkin north of Yenthai. General Kuroki's enveloping movement lias lDe(?n successful since his decisive defeat of the Russians on Friday night, and as the Japanese center and left armies are driving the Russian center and right steadily across the Tai river the escape of (General Kuropatkin's divisions in force is doubtful. The Noroe Vremya this morning claims to have Information to the effect that the bulk of the Russian supplies were removed from I-iaoyang to Mukden before the battle commenced. The paper says that fly* belief of tlie public that I.iaoyang would be held by the Russians was based on the thought that the supplies were still there and that it was thought that Llaoy.mg would be a sort of Plevna-held garrison, even if the main army retreated northward. The fact is, however, the paper adds, that the place had been dismantled and held by a strong rear guard. The battle of I.iaoyang, therefore, becomes merely a rear guard action of an exceptionally fierce character. Liaoyang's defenders have now safely extricated themselves, the paper concludes, and have joined the main army across the Tai river in the neighborhood of the Yentai. Ia the midst of the excitement a fire escape on fifth floor of tlie building, crowded with tenants aiul firemen, gave way and fell with its human load to the rear yard. Luckily most of those who fell lauded on a pile of bedding and escaped severe injury. The rest were piled beneath a mass of iron wreckage and were taken to the hospital suffering from broken bones and internal injures. One of the worst featfjfres of the fire was the cowardice of the men. In their haste to save themselves they deserted wives and children, trampling them underfoot wherever they retarded the way. Others fought the efforts of the firemen to rescue the women and children first and had to be subdued by force. FRANCE'S WAR WITH ROME. Combes Declares For Separation of Church and State. These brands of flour we guarantee to be tlie best flour on the market without an exception. Neither the number of Russians who succeeded in escaping north nor the number encompassed by Kuroki's turning movement is known here. The war office announces that the severity of the Russian defeat hinges largely on what General Kuroki will do in crossing the railroad. If successful, the number of Russian prisoners will in all probability be the largest since the battles of the Franco-l'russian war. In retracing the policy of the government during tin* last two years he asserted that the municipal and departmental elections had gven full evidence that the policy was approved by the country. here. 27al0 J. No detailed report lias come of the lighting since Friday night, and there Is douht concerning the nuinlier of Russians who escaped, but no douht as to the character of the victory in and about Liao.vang. Several of them had to be beaten into Insensibility on the tire escapes before the firemen could proceed with their work of rescue. As one of the firemen was carrying a young girl down the ladder a man whom he had refused to take first kicked hiin in the face, almost causing him to lose his hold. The brutal cowardice of these men is apparent in the list of dead, which bears only the names of women and children. The risk of France losing lier position as the protector of eastern Catholics, the premier said, was a wholly insufficient motive for foregoing the separation of church and state, which circumstances had obliged him to inscribe on his programmes alongside the reduction of military service, the income tax and workmen's pensions. Still going on. Call and will give yon some bargains that you are sure to buy. See our windows. we No details are given of the escape of General Stakelberg's corps from the clutches of the enemy, but it is believed that it owes its safety to the neglect or inability of the Japanese to follow up their advantage. General Stakelberg was allowed to cross the river and came up with the main army in time to enable the shattered remnants of General Orloff's detachment to retreat. This exploit is likely to atone for General Stnkelberg's disobedience, but unless the emperor forgives him he will have to appear before a court martial and probably will lo.ag his command. BRENNAN & ROBERTS, Child's Oxfords, were 75c and $100, now ' Girls' Oxfords, were $1 and $1.25, now Ladies' Oxfords, were $1.26 now 50c There is some surprise shown here by foreign military attaches that the Russian center and left divisions were able to extricate themselves at Liaoyang and cross to the north bank of the Tai. That they could do this was expected by the war department, and it was to drive them westward that (Jeneral Kurokl made his tlanking march last Wednesday. General Kuropatkin for months contrived a series of trenches and fortifications extending all along the ridges of the mountains to the Tai river, and so, with a much inferior force, he was able to retard the work of the Japanese army while his main dlvisloi* were crossing the bridges which he built during the spring and early summer months. There is no doubt, however, that in his retirement across the river General Oku's army always was in touch with the enemy, and while nothing has been heard from the left of the Japanese since Friday morning it is confidently believed that when General Oku reports the Japanese success will take on a more decisive character. 42 North Main St. Next to Euele Hotel, The premier was heartily applauded.
