Tokyo, Aug. 8.—Admiral Togo reports an exciting torpedo boat destroyer fight which took place off Port Arthur on Friday evening, Aug. 5. The Japanese torpedo boat destroyers Akebono and Obosa approached the entrance of the harbor for the purpose of reconnoiteriug. Fourteen Russian torpedo boat destroyers dashed out. separated and endeavored to surround the Japanese boats. The latter broke through the cordon, however, driving oft' three of the Russian boats. At this point the Japanese torpedo- boat destroyer Inasuma joined the other two, and the three turned and spiritedly attacked the eleven Russian boats. The latter retired within the harbor. The Knight Commander was promptly condemned. Work of Recovering Bodies Attended with Great Difficulty and Delay. Now Haven, Conn., Aug. 8.—Tlie employees of the Consolidated Railway company have voted to accept the proposition of the company made in response to the trolley men's demands. By the terms of the reply all regular men will receive 21 cents an hour in place of 20 cents, which has been the rate in force. The men asked for TlVt cents an hour. The request for recog nition of the union was refused. SWIMMERS WENT CRAZY. Attempted to Swim From Brooklyn Bridge to Coney Island. Now York, Auk. 8.—Clifford O. Baxter, n civil engineer, and Captain John Enrlght of the South Bench life saving station started on a swimming contest from tiie Brooklyn bridge to the Iron pier at Coney Island, and both were taken out of the water temporarily crazed after swimming for seven hours and when within a mile of their goal. Fourteen Russian torpedo boat destroyers dashed out. separated and endeavored to surround the Japanese boats. The latter broke through the cordon, however, driving oft' three of the Russian boats. At this point the Japanese torpedo- boat destroyer Inasuma joined the other two, and the three turned and spiritedly attacked the eleven Russian boats. The latter retired within the harbor. The Knight Commander was promptly condemned. Work of Recovering Bodies Attended with Great Difficulty and Delay. Now Haven, Conn., Aug. 8.—Tlie employees of the Consolidated Railway company have voted to accept the proposition of the company made in response to the trolley men's demands. By the terms of the reply all regular men will receive 21 cents an hour in place of 20 cents, which has been the rate in force. The men asked for TlVt cents an hour. The request for recog nition of the union was refused. SWIMMERS WENT CRAZY. Attempted to Swim From Brooklyn Bridge to Coney Island. Now York, Auk. 8.—Clifford O. Baxter, n civil engineer, and Captain John Enrlght of the South Bench life saving station started on a swimming contest from tiie Brooklyn bridge to the Iron pier at Coney Island, and both were taken out of the water temporarily crazed after swimming for seven hours and when within a mile of their goal.
