The ironclad stopped, heeled over to starboard and began to sink by the bow, sending up a Quantity of steam. Most of the Jewelry was stolen on Monday night from the mansion of General Frederic de Peyster at Tivoli, on the banks of the Hudson. There is a belief that some of the booty was taken from the tomb of "Lady Mary" Livingston, near the old Livingston manor in Columbia county, which was broken open and desecrated about three weeks ago. Buffalo, May 21. — The left leg of Major Theodore A. Bingham of the United States engineers has been amputated at the general hospital just abdve the knee. The major stood the operation very well. Russians Resist Stubbornly. Honolulu, May 21. —Former Land Commissioner S. S. Boyd and Chief Clerk N. S. Mahulu have been arrested on charges of embezzlement. Commissioner J. W. Pratt of the department of public lands says that discoveries made by an examination of the records indicate that the alleged peculations of the accused extend back for four or five years. A Complete Line of Groceries. Newchwang, May 21.—The reports of the Japanese retreat to Fengwangcheng are officially confirmed. The Japanese, numbering 20,000 men, came upon 32,000 Uusslans in a strong position on Monday, sixty miles west of Fengwangcheng. It being unwise to risk a battle the Japanese retreated In good order and with great rapidity. An unofficial Itussian authority says a pitched battle was not fought, but rumdr says there was considerable loss on both sides during the clashes, with the Cossacks harassing the flanks of the Japanese. Cossacks Pursue Retreating Foe For Tokyo, May 21.—A trustworthy report hus been received at imperial headquarters that the Hussian cruiser Bogatyr ran ashore outside Vladivostok in a heavy fog and was destroyed. The Japanese, numbering 20,000 men, came upon 32,000 Uusslans in a strong position on Monday, sixty miles west of Fengwangcheng.
