Shamokln, May 6.—A fire of unknown origin broke out in Locust Gap slope last night, Michael Shannon, John Boglan and Michael Boglan, who were in the mine at tho time, are entombed. It is not known whether they are dead or alive. The fire is still burning fiercely. A rescuing party is endeavoring to reach the entombed men. Neweliwang, May 0.—Five Japanese warships with a large number of transports have been seen near Kinchou bay, on the west coast of the Liaotung peninsula, north of Tort Arthur. John Shepard, Boston's best known merchant, has celebrated his fiftieth year in business. Welch, La., May 0.—A hailstorm hero lasted thirty nilniites and was so thick that drifts twelve inches deep were formed against many buildings. All the glass in a passenger train was broken, about'50 per cent of tlie windows of resklencefe and business houses here were broken, and there was heavy damage to goods. There was six Inches of water in the streets. The testimony alternated from cold, measured sentences to impassioned appeal with dramatic effect. The climax came when Mrs. Powell finished the portrayal of the scene In the garret of her home. She gazed at the judge in a frightened way and cried: "Oh, I didn't want to do it! I didn't mean to do It! No—no; not that!" Washington, May 6.—The official confirmation of the report that the Japanese have landed on Liao-Tung peninsula, back of Port Arthur, was received today by the state department. Seventy were killed and 100 wounded. The remainder of the body fled in disorder. A Russian officer who was captured states thar the oniy bodies wnich retreated in order on- Mw 1st were five or six infantry battalions and two artillery companies. Washington, May 6.—In a letter to the navy department Captain Swinbourne, commanding the Texas, said that there is on that ship a new six inch gun which has been fired nineteen times and has made nineteen hits. This is the only gun in the navy that has never made a miss. In his letter to the department Captain Swinbourne also calls attention to the splendid nerve shown, by the men of the Texas in target practice. Berlin, May »!.—It is announced here that the Hamburg-American Steamship company has ordered to be built a vessel of 35,000 tons. It will be 7115 feet long and will have capacity for 1,200 cabin and 2,388 steerage passengers besides the usual saloons. Its freight capacity will be 14,000 tons. If a lauding should take place at Pitsewo the experts anticipate that Togo's battleship squadron will bombard Port Arthur in order to prevent the garrison from sending re-enforcements by railroad to the troops opposing the Japanese there. Neither the admiralty nor the war office believes that a disembarkation of the Japanese can be stopped, as the guns of the Japanese cruisers could command the point of landing, but after the Japanese are ashore then the Russians will strike and, officers here say, strike hard. What force they will be able to bring up to resist the invaders cannot be stated definitely, the strength of the army on the peninsula of Llaotung having been kept a strict secret Thos.F.Mangan&Co Livingston, Mont., May 0.—A party of eastern tourists traveling through Yellowstone park had a narrow escape from being dashed to death in a chasm along the Golden date road. A coach containing five passengers slipped over the side of a precipice. It was caught by brush and its descent stayed for an instant, during which the passengers managed to extricate themselves and escape. The stage fell with a crash to the bottom of the canyon, 700 feet below, killing the horses and demolishing the vehicle. Coach Falls Over Precipice. Horse Malady Came From France, Washington, May 0.—The investigation by the department of agriculture of the horse malady which has broken out In Iowa has shown that the disease was brought to tills country by horses imported from France. Washington, May 6.—In a letter to the navy department Captain Swinbourne, commanding the Texas, said that there is on that ship a new six inch gun which has been fired nineteen times and has made nineteen hits. If a lauding should take place at Pitsewo the experts anticipate that Togo's battleship squadron will bombard Port Arthur in order to prevent the garrison from sending re-enforcements by railroad to the troops opposing the Japanese there. Neither the admiralty nor the war office believes that a disembarkation of the Japanese can be stopped, as the guns of the Japanese cruisers could command the point of landing, but after the Japanese are ashore then the Russians will strike and, officers here say, strike hard. What force they will be able to bring up to resist the invaders cannot be stated definitely, the strength of the army on the peninsula of Llaotung having been kept a strict secret Thos.F.Mangan&Co Livingston, Mont., May 0.—A party of eastern tourists traveling through Yellowstone park had a narrow escape from being dashed to death in a chasm along the Golden date road. A coach containing five passengers slipped over the side of a precipice. It was caught by brush and its descent stayed for an instant, during which the passengers managed to extricate themselves and escape. The stage fell with a crash to the bottom of the canyon, 700 feet below, killing the horses and demolishing the vehicle. Coach Falls Over Precipice. Horse Malady Came From France, Washington, May 0.—The investigation by the department of agriculture of the horse malady which has broken out In Iowa has shown that the disease was brought to tills country by horses imported from France.
