But, however, Miss, thiris quite an important step you are about to take, and now is a grand opportunity to consider the matter over. Isn't it possible you havo been too hasty? It iB not too late yet to coino back of it, but in half an hour it will be all over with you. Remember the knot you can tic in a minute you will be a long time untying." Every yoang man believes that in some stage of his future lifeChe will enjoy & competency.— With this belief he rears a fanciful superstructure, and then patiently awaits the time when he shall take possession. But how large a proportion pass through the years until they find themselves old men standing on the verge of the grave, with the dreams of youth unrealised. And why is it ? The New York Sun says: In this country of boundless resources there is no good reason why every man of ordinary capacity may not lay up a competency for his declining Look at the men of wealth Iq this city elsewhere who have been the architects of their own fortunes. They had'no better opportunities for acquiring wealth, no stronger incentive to Industry, no more favorable persona! qualities than many men generally have. The foundation Of their success consisted m this fact They appreciated the importance of saving money. They realized the force of the old maxim "that a pony saved jjl, two peace earned." they differed from the majority of young men in this respect The latter are impressed with the desirability of paving money, but they cannot commence to do it now. Their wages or salaries are too small. They are only able to get aloog decently with A11-their present means, but as soon as their incomes are increased they will begin to lay up some money. The yoang man who acts tin accordance with this idea will never occupy : his airy castle of wealth. Ask A, T. Stewert how he did in this respect, when a young man, and we venture to say he wili reply that he regularley saved a small portion of his wages, even when they were a mero trifle when compafbd wltfc the incomes of many young men wWf arfr noW "wkitftife tor a more fivornble time to save their-earnings. Now, We-would sot have any young nan to be raiserly or niggardly. We would not httve him stint himself in anything that ia really necessary to his comfort. What we advise is this: That every young man shall make it a practice to 6ave a portion ofhis earnings—no matter how small— and place them in his savings' bank. It is not the value of the taoney that would thus accumulate'in a given time from which the chief benefit of this plan would flow. Its value consists more of the moral influence exerted upon the character of the person—moulding it into habits of economy and frugality. Every young man who has an incomo at all should have an account in the savings banks. That institution does more good in the formation of industrial and useful men, and in keeping the susceptible away from the allurements of vice, than almost any other agency. It tends to stimulate a man's energies, to promote thrifty habit", and to start him out upon an honorable and prosperous career. Therefore, young man, remember that the road to fortune lies through the saying's bank. Captain Turner, of the schooner Algcrine, who arrived in the city this morning, reports having witnessed, at about the hour of 11 o'clock, on Wednesday night, a terrific and splendid phenomenon in the desent of an immense meteor into Lake Ontario, which struck the water not more than three hundred yards from his vessel. The Captain states that a few moments previous to the appearance, he had come up from his cabin on deck, and was standing on the main hatch. The vessel was on the starboard tack, sailing along finely with a light southwest breeze for Port Dalhoueie and about twelve miles off Niegra Lighthouse, bearing 8.8. W. Presently his attention was attracted by a sadden illumination from tD£ northwest, which almost instantly increased to a dazzling brilliancy. On turning, he beheld a large body of Ire in the heavens, which seemed to he approaching at a deseat of about 30 degrees, and growing rapily larger as it csme nearer, the observation of time being so brief as hardly to admit ot computation in seconds. The momentary impression of Captain Turner was that certain and complete destruction awaited his vessel and all on board, as the terrible missile seemed to be directed to strike the vessel broadside. The 'time for reflection was brief, and the light emitted was sd blinding in its effect that the man at the wheeel and another of the crew on deck fell prostrate, and remained for some time completely stupefied with terror. The Captain himself as he states, remained transfixed, and saw the firey body enter tho water some 300 yards ahead of his vessel, about two points to the windward.— A loud explosion attended the contact with the water, which was sharp and deafening, equal to a thunderbolt close at hand, and a large volume of steam and spray ascended into the air, which was noticed for some moments afterward. In the confusion of the moment, Captain Turner was unsible to oomprehend what had oecured, and the crew were inclind to believe that the phenomenon was an explosion of lightning, the gUTLER HOUSE, LEONA. attorney at law, 0 riTTSTON, pa., PITT8T0N, PENN'A GROCERS, 103 Murray, near West Street, NEW YORK. Are and Watkr.—Set a pitcher of water in a room, and in a few hoore it will have absorbed nearly all the respired and perspired gases ih the room, the air of which will have become purer, but the water utterly filthy.— The colder the water is, the greater the capacity to contain those gases. At ordinary temperatures, a pint of water will contain a pint of carbonic acid gas, and several pints of ammdnla. The capacity is nearly double by reducing the water to the temperature of ice. Hence, water kept in the room awhile is always unfit for use. For the same reason, the water from a pump stock should always be pumped out in the morning before any is used. Impure water is more injurious than impure air. This shows the economy as well as the convenionce of a modern ice pitcher, a splendid invention, which, as it seems, is more than ornament and show ; avo, it is really and absolutely a necessity. Let these hints be heeded by our health-loving and life-preserving readers. For this department also, he has a scientific workman of *»ple expedience in the best shops In the state. But the son has forgotten the mother's tender ministrations now. Adrift from the moorings of home, he is cold, selfish, heartless, and "Mother" has no sacred meaning to the prodigal. LOOKING GLASSES, God's Cars fob tfs.—Wo talk of God as if wo thought Him to be the governor of the world, arid the dispenser of all events that happen to mankind; but yet, alas ; how few of us are there that dare repose any confidence in Him 1 Our care about our affairs is as great as if all things came to pass by chance, or fate, or the will of man. We ire, indeed, apt enough to trust God with our souls, not caring how litUe thought we take about them ourselves; but as for our worfdly concerns, we will not trust Him any farther than as we see we have the means of accomplishing our designs in our own hands. But this is a base, unthankful, unworthy practice; for shame's sake, let uS shake off this dull, earthly, stupid humor; let us cast our eyes up to the Author and Preserver of our beings, and, like men, make use of the reason and understanding that He has given us, not living altogether by 6ense, as the brute beasts do, but exercising foith in the goodness and power of God. HowtoGstab Edccatio*.—Boys say often, "we want an education, but we are poor and father is poor, and we can't get it; so we are going to learn a trade, or go into a store or do something else." Now let me say, every boy that wants an education, if he wrll bend his force to it can get just as good a one as he wants. The way is open. Education does not come through academies and colleges, and seminaries ; these are helps, but it comes by stady and reading, and comparing. All the schools and colleges and seminaries in the world, will not make aschelar of a man without these; and with them a man will be one if he never sees a college. A Stairless House.—There is now building in a busy quarter of Parii an experimental house, which, if successful—and there seems no reason why it should not be so—will serve as a model for similar structures in this and other great cities, where the value of land is very high, and the eoonomy of space a matter of vital importance. The chief novelty in thishouse id the absence of any staircase, the place of that hitherto-unnecessary means of access being supplied by a hydraulic elevator, ascending and descending noiselessly every minute. By means of this the lodgers will reach their respective floors speedily and without effort, at any given minute of day or night Another advantage of this arrangement is that it enables houses to be built to a much greater height, the upper floors being as easily aoccssible as the lower, and for that natter preferable, on account ol better air, light and freedom from intrusion or the noises of the street. The tenement house building in Paris will be eleven Btories high from the street level. Just make the picture in your mind. S I C ! AND MUSICAL INST UM ENTS! "Love the truth and peace" is a very important precept of the Divine Word. How often does an attachment to sectarian creeds overcome a oandld desire to receive the truth in its purity ! This should not be so. How often does a relish for sharp controversey prevail over the yearning for peace and harmony I But the noble love of truth favors the grand interests of concord in the Church of Christ. Too Much for her.— A good story is related of a prudish old maid who applied at a certain fashionable photograph gallery in this city to have her picture taken. As old maids are generally of a very inquisitive natnre,al ways poking around.where they have no business, she accidently looked into tbe machine, and to her horrer discovered that objects are reflected inverted, or, as she expressed it," upside down." She poreraptorily refused to sit any more, and adjusting her bonnet ribbons, remarked that "that game was played out." She wasn't going to be stuck up that manner if she never had a picture, and with a swing of the " tiltor," which would have done credit to a New York fashionable, she sailed from the room with an air of insulted dignity.—Bock Island Argut. jq*EW TOBACCO STORE PRiETORIUS & CHUMARD May 17,186fi.—ly G. The same is true of girls, and what is true of this pursuit is true of any other. The fofce must be from yourself and you must develop it. Dist. of Pennsylvania, SCRANTON, Luzerne Co., Penn. July 4'67. Sculptor, and Dealer in I think in all the world—and I have been over it a deal in my day—I have never beh«ld a more boautiful sight than one sees from the deck of a boat at this point The river is a mile wide, and upon the opposite side Mount St. Helens, though miles away, seems to rise a high snow-crowned cone, from the water; while looking up the Columbia one sees Mount Hood, also snow-crowned and glistening, and also apparently rising from the water in an impassable barrier. Just make the picture in your mind. The swift, rough river, swollen by the melted snows of the far North and the Rocky Mountains; its banks covered with every shade of green, from the vivid brightness of springtime, to the dark heavy color of the ever-green firs—and the whole contrasted with and glorified by five mountains copped with perpetual snow. gEWING MACHINES! All fob Show.—The world is crasy for show. There is not one person in a thousand who dares fall back on his real, simple self for power to get throagh the world, and exact enjoyment as he goes*along. There is too much living in the eyes of other people. There is no end to the aping, the mimicry, the false airs, and the superficial airs. It requires rare courage, we admit, to live np to one's enlightened convictions in these days. Unless you consent to join in the general cheat, there is no room for you among the great mob of pretenders. If a man dares to live within his means, and is resolntoin his pur] pose not to appear more than he really is, let him be applauded.
