THE PRICE OF COAL. Some Remarks Anent the Reduction in Price Not Affecting Local Consumers. brewing and perfect bottling. Editor Gazette: Your editorial page of a few days ago has a re-prlnted article upon the coal trade, from which I clip the following: The squadron of Admiral Wlrenius left Cherbourg yesterday for" the Baltic.Charles L. 'Phones—Old, 422-2 New, 977 Berlin, April 11.—The police of Berlin and other European capitals have been warned by Scotland yard to maintain the strictest vigilance for persons going to Malta and other points at wtylch the Kaiser will touch on his tour. It is evident that a body of conspirators are working at their headquarters in London. This, unfortunately, does not harmonize with statements made to me last week by the official in charge at one of our retail coal pockets. Prior to the labor trouble of 1900, egg, stove and chestnut coal was sold at $2.60 per ton of 3,240 pounds. When work was resumed at mines the same coals were raised to $3 per ton. In the classic language of one operator, "The people sympathize with the miners, now let 'em pay for their coal." It was passing strange that people should sympathize with workmen who were obliged to pay their employers a profit of over 200 per cent, upon each keg of powder or gallon of oil used in their work, still they did. The wages of miners was increased 10 per cent, and the price of coal was increased-20 per cent. At a later date the price of sizes given was Increased to $3.60 per ton. In September last 25 cents more was added, making the price $3.75 per ton. As stated In the article you print the custom In past years has been to make a reduction of 60 cents per ton on the first of April and to gradually increase the price during the summer months, again reaching the highest price at the beginning of the colder months of the year. Brennan and Bread is The Staff of Life Pope Celebrates Mass at St. Peter's, The Japanese papers ridicule the idea of the Russian Baltic soa squadron ever reaching the "war east and do not believe that it will ever make the attempt.Rome, April 11.—Pope Pius celebrated his first mass at St. Peter's today amid a vast concourse of people. The scene was a brilliant and inspiring one. His Holiness, it was noticed, was pale and looked more aged than when he appeared before the populace on the occasion of his accession to the paual throne. Statement* Were Fall*. Roberts* When Tucker was first brought to the police station here on the evening of April 4, hp admitted to the officers that he was in Weston on the day of the tragedy and that he passed tho Page house. His statements, however, concerning his actions that day were so well corroborated by a friend, who claimed to have been his companion, that the police were convinced of his innocence, and he was allowed to return to his home. The attention of the police wus again turned to Tucker through the discovery that several of his statements by which ho had proved an alibi were false. Japanese Fleet Hover* About Port 'Ar- Chefu, April 11.—For five days now Admiral Togo's fleet has been between Port Arthur and the eastern islands of the Miao group. On last Thursday transports going northeast were seen near these Islands, and the belief here Is general that an important land movement is under way. The Japanese ships have covered Port Arthur day and night on the east and west since last Wednesday, and the nearness to that port of practically all the war fleet suggests the opening of Japan's actual hostilities on land. There Is now hourly expectation of news from the Liaotung peninsula, at which point. It is assumed, n big army force will land to cut the communications north of Port Arthur or march north to flank the Russians near the Yalu. thur, Covering Land Operations. Portions of Tucker's clothing were later sent to Boston for the examination of possible blood stains by Professor Wood of the Harvard Medical school. When examined by the detectives last Monday, Tucker admitted frankly that there were blood stains on his trousers, but he accounted for their presence. It la now announced by our local dealers that they do not Intend the reduction of 50 cents per ton to apply to local sales, but only to coal Shipped out of the coal region. The New Yorker, Bostonlan, BufFalonlan and Canadian can have the benefit of the reduction, but the Plttstonlan shall continue to pay the highest price as a penalty for living where coal sold locally has always paid the operator a better profit than that he shipped away. The scene was a brilliant and inspiring one.
