His return Is said to be on account of the illness of his wife, who is at Loretta, Pa. The bombardment of March 9 showed to the Russians the advantage to the enemy of the position off Liaotishin which Vice Admiral Togo's ships took up this morning, and Vice Admiral Makaroff sought to minimize this advantage by so stationing the battleship Retviaan that her shells could reach the Japanese battleships. The fact that the Retvlzan was used foi this purpose proves the falsity of the report that her great guns had been removed and installed as a battery at Pigeon bay, and it has given rise to th« impression that there is an inadequate supply of great guns at Port Arttyur as otherwise a battery would have been erected to protect the town at the only point which Vice Admiral Togo seems to regard as vulnerable from the sea. The Retvlzan In Action. Mr. Hill's Statement. In explaining the plan outlined in the circular James J. Hill said: Time Is Very "We have compAed with the court's decree promptly, just as I said we would do. A pro rata distribution was the only practicable way of carrying out the court's directions. A redistribution of the Oreat Northern and Northern Pacific stock originally deposited wonld have been out of the question.
