Five weeks ago he had $3,- 000,000 cleaned up in less than a year and was practically out of the cotton market. Instead of going abroad for a rest, as lie had said he would, he got back into the market and the bears have been taking it away from him at the rate of $000,000 a week. It is estimated that he is carrying 300,000 bales of May and July cotton, on which he bus lost an average of $10 a bale. At per pair $1.25 Newchwang, March 19.—Six hundred scouts have been rushed from this point by General Krondradovttch to Shangjuentai, halfway to Fort Arthur, because of a dispatch that two Japanese cruisers had been seen off Glacis point and fifteen miles out. The railroad is well fortified as well as the cliffs commanding Helen bay at this point, and General Krondradovltch is confident that any attempted landing at the point will not be successful. The cruisers were eight miles offshore yesterday and went north into the gulf as far as Liuja. They then steamed west and were lost to sight toward evening. The presence of the Japanese warships is believed to mark the beginning of the army invasion west of Port Arthur. For a moment there was dead silence; then a roar went up that was lieurd all over the block. The members sailed into each other In what looked to be n rough and tumble fight. Furniture was smashed, hats were thrown to the ceiling, clothing was torn, and several members were knocked down and Jumped upon. When a measure of calm was restored the floor was covered with broken chairs, smashed hats and pieces of clothing. When within a few hours' journey of their cache Hubbard's strength failed altogether, and his companions left him to try to procure food. The British fishing boat Sea Mew, in here from Slialcithien island, reports sixteen transports at Kaoshan, in the Miiio group of Islands, on which troops were embarking. Two warships of big build and several torpedo boat destroyers were southeast of Kaoshan. It has been known for some time that the Japanese army was somewhere on the Miao islands in force, but as Admiral Toko stopped all transportation between the northerly group and this point no Information has come from them in three weeks. The Sea Mew pussed within four miles of the westerly end of Kaoshan island and says there were several hundred small boats engaged in conveying the soldiers to the .transports. J„ March 10.—A Are In the oil works of Borne & Scrymser, which were badly damaged by fire a short time ago, caused a damage estimated at about $200,000. The damage at the former Are was about $75,000. At this fire, as at the last oue, a number of oil tanks exploded, seriously imperiling the lives of the firemen. The fire started about 11:30 o'clock from an unknown source. The liner passed on and reported that she had struck a torpedo. Dwyer of New Yorlc, on her way from New Orleans to her home, while in a Pullman car in the Union station here was robbed by a newsboy of a valuable diamong ring, a diamond incrusted watch, $75 iu cash and ail her trunk checks. The minister Is also reported to have renewed his threat that on the slightest movement on China's part Russian troops will march on Peking. It is understood that In reply to this, the correspondent adds, China refused to recall her troops. The dispatch says intense satisfaction Is felt over the failure, as Sully has been the main cause of the deadly disorganization of the British cotton trade and intense anx-, iety and privation to thousands of families in the county of Lancashire. At per pair $1.25 Newchwang, March 19.—Six hundred scouts have been rushed from this point by General Krondradovttch to Shangjuentai, halfway to Fort Arthur, because of a dispatch that two Japanese cruisers had been seen off Glacis point and fifteen miles out. The railroad is well fortified as well as the cliffs commanding Helen bay at this point, and General Krondradovltch is confident that any attempted landing at the point will not be successful. The cruisers were eight miles offshore yesterday and went north into the gulf as far as Liuja. They then steamed west and were lost to sight toward evening. The presence of the Japanese warships is believed to mark the beginning of the army invasion west of Port Arthur. For a moment there was dead silence; then a roar went up that was lieurd all over the block. The members sailed into each other In what looked to be n rough and tumble fight. Furniture was smashed, hats were thrown to the ceiling, clothing was torn, and several members were knocked down and Jumped upon. When a measure of calm was restored the floor was covered with broken chairs, smashed hats and pieces of clothing. It has been known for some time that the Japanese army was somewhere on the Miao islands in force, but as Admiral Toko stopped all transportation between the northerly group and this point no Information has come from them in three weeks. The damage at the former Are was about $75,000. At this fire, as at the last oue, a number of oil tanks exploded, seriously imperiling the lives of the firemen. The fire started about 11:30 o'clock from an unknown source. The minister Is also reported to have renewed his threat that on the slightest movement on China's part Russian troops will march on Peking. It is understood that In reply to this, the correspondent adds, China refused to recall her troops.
