The deed, signed by President roe Feb. 4, 1819, and granting to Jan»v. Darden. a veteran of the war of 1812, the Missouri land, is in a perfect state of preservation. It had been hidden behind the old canvas for more than seventy-five years, was almost lost in | the Galveston flood of 1901 and at [length arrived in the possession of Mrs. Mattern through the Kev. Dr. Thorpeh, an old time friend of the family, upon his death. It was not until last week that Mrs. Mattern decided to have the old painting reframed and discovered the valuable paper. She thought thte document was worthless, but out of curiosity submitted it to Mngistrate Pool of Manhattan and several other lawyers. An Investigation revealed the fact that the deed is on record in the government office at Washington atKl that the Mattern claim to the land is legal and can tDe sustained. County Treasurer Thomas A. Orr of Carroll county. Mo., reported to the lawyers that the. land coverted by the old deed is now occupied as Bart of the business and residential portion of the towns of Carrollton and Hate and has grown to be very valuable. The deed, signed by President roe Feb. 4, 1819, and granting to Jan»v. Darden. a veteran of the war of 1812, the Missouri land, is in a perfect state of preservation. It had been hidden behind the old canvas for more than seventy-five years, was almost lost in | the Galveston flood of 1901 and at [length arrived in the possession of Mrs. Mattern through the Kev. Dr. Thorpeh, an old time friend of the family, upon his death. It was not until last week that Mrs. Mattern decided to have the old painting reframed and discovered the valuable paper. She thought thte document was worthless, but out of curiosity submitted it to Mngistrate Pool of Manhattan and several other lawyers. An Investigation revealed the fact that the deed is on record in the government office at Washington atKl that the Mattern claim to the land is legal and can tDe sustained. County Treasurer Thomas A. Orr of Carroll county. Mo., reported to the lawyers that the. land coverted by the old deed is now occupied as Bart of the business and residential portion of the towns of Carrollton and Hate and has grown to be very valuable.
