The object of sinking these vessels was attained. The officers and crews returned safely. Although there is no report regarding our fleet direct from Admiral Togo, no doubt can be entertained regarding its safety." Rochester, N. Y., Feb. 26.—Roches- Rochester's business section was threatened with destruction by a fire which broke out at 6 o'clock this morning in the heart of the dry goods section. Two hours after the first alarm was turned in the losses were estimated at $7,000,- 000, with the flames still spreading. Buffalo and Syracuse were appealed to for assistance in quelling the flames and fire apparatus and men from these cities, which are a couple of hours' distant from Rochester, are expected. The flre started in the central elevator shaft in the vast establishment of the Rochester Dry Goods Co., at 156 East Main street The flames, fanned by the draft in the elevator shaft, spread with the rapidity of lightning to the various parts of the building, and less than ten minutes after the discovery of the flre the whole of the immense building, which is seven stories high, was ablaze, and the brick walls began-to bulge, making the work of the firemen extremely hazardous. Less than half an hour after the fire started, the rear wall of the building fell into Division street, and the street was filled with burning debris. As a result of the falling of the wall, the flames darted across the street to the dry goods store of Sibley, Lindsay & Co., one of the largest and finest business establishments in t|ie city. The building was 12 stories high and was supposed to be fireproof. Shortly afteir the flames attacked the building, there were seven explosions, which, together with the flre, completely gutted the building. At 7 o'clock the chief of the city flre department said that the flre was beyond the control of tho local department, and it was at that hour that telegrams were sent to Buffalo and Syracuse, asking for assistance.Stegmaier Brewing Co Bottling Department. c 'Phones—Old, 422-2 New, 977 Japs Got Russia's Beef. San Francisco, Feb. 26.—The sailing of the steamer China for the orient has been postponed until tomorrow. On board of the steamer workmen are removing 1,000,000 pounds of beef sold to the Russian government by a local firm. Three million pounds of beef bad been contracted for by the Russian government, and the first two installments were shipped on the steamers Coptic and Korea. The beef was seized by Japanese officials, and it Is believed the local sellers received orders at almost the last moment to remove the third shipment from the China. WILKESBABRE, PA. Chefoo, Feb. 26.—A report has been received from a Japanese source that while the ships sunk at Port Arthur on Tuesdiy do not block the channel sufficiently to impede destroyers and small cruisers, battleships will be unable to pass them. Refugees bound to Chefu from Harbin, Mukden and other points since last Monday have said that the Japanese landed at Poisslet harbor, in tho gulf of Anvllle, about 100 miles southeast of Vladivostok. Not much attention was paid to these rumors until missionaries came in here from Omoso and Kirln. These missionaries are English, relate a circumstantial story of the Japanese invasion in the northeast and say that all the European civilians are fleeing from the pew center of war. The missionaries say that the Japanese landed in force at Poisslet bay on last Friday, having light artillery, and immediately began operations against Hunchnn, the main city on the road to Kirin from the east coast of Manchuria. Refugees began to arrive in Kirln last Sunday, and on Monday, the missionaries say, the officers of the Russo- Cliinese bank removed all the specie to Kwangchengtst, where commercial Interests are seeking safety and defense. When the missionaries arrived in Kwangchengtsi on Tuesday troops were coming south from Harbin with marching orders for Kirln. Russian Base In Danger. "The «uemy irgafet attacked Port Ar thur ffom 1 to 3 a. in, and was everywhere repulsed. Details follow." Following the dispatch of Major General Pilug saying the Japanese had again attacked Port Arthur yesterday morning and had been repulsed, Viceroy Alexeieff has sent in an identical report to the czar. The fact that the Japanese have re newed the attack is mterpreted here to mean that they are determined to bottle up or destroy the Russian fleet at Port Arthur in order to give themselves freedom for land maneuvers to cut off or invest the city or as a feint to cover a movement elsewhere. Streams from dozens of lines of hose apparently had little effect on the fire, which continued to eat its way through the doomed structures. An Investigation shows that the Are originated in the basement of the Rochester Dry Goods Co.'s building. There was an explosion about 4.15 that almost wrecked the building and those adjoining, and this was followed by the appearance of a cloud of smoke and a sheet of flame. Within half an hour it was evident that the Beadle & Sherburne Co.'s store, which occupied five buildings east of where the Are started, was doomed, and the books and records were removed. All of the buildings were destroyed .within a short time. The walls of Sibley, Lindsay & Co.'s wholesale building, extending to Mortimer street, fell and crushed in several small houses in Mortimer street. The occupants were taken out by the police soon after the extent of the Are was realized and none was hurt. An explosion 'of the boilers followed, which shot the flames into the granite building. The flames shot up the elevator shaft to the twelfth floor, out of the reach of the firemen. This was the finest building in the city. The heat was so Intense In the heart of this building that at 9 o'clock the front wall bulged perceptibly and the rear wall was also becoming dangerous. The only reported Injury, up to 9.30, was that to assistaut chief J. Jaynes, who was thrown to the sidewalk while directing operations on the roof of the department store of Burke & Fltzslmmons, corner of Main and St. Paul streets. chant, Who Then Commit- Campbell, D Rozelle & ted Suicide. Knowles, formerly a dry goods merchant, In the Marine Bank building at 10.20 this ifcornlng. Knowles then left the building and shot himself on the sidewalk, dying almost instantly. Schwarbe is in a dying condition. OUR ANNUAL CLEARANCE SALE! Webster No further details are yet available of the unsuccessful attempt of the Japanese to bottle up the Russian fleet at Port Arthur by sinking big merchantmen at the mouth of the harbor. The brief details contained in the official dispatches indicate that the coup was planned, according to the usual Japanese tactics, to take place during the night, that it was desperately pushed and backed by eight torpedo boats, which continued fighting until daylight, but that it failed completely. The irritation against the United States on account of the supposed unfriendly attitude of that country toward Russia, which was slightly noticeable throughout the negotiiftions, seems to have become daily more pronounced, and since the Vicksburg incident at Chemulpo, when the commander of this American gunboat Is said to have refused to unite with the commanders of other foreign warships at Chemulpo to protest against the fighting which resulted in the loss of' the Russian warships Variag and Korletz and the fact that the Vicksburg did not take on board survivors of the Russian ships, American business men here are really alarmed concerning the possible effect upon American trade. Within the last few days orders for American goods have been countermanded, the only explanation given being that the prospective purchasers did not desire to buy American goods under the present circumstances. It is not believed they will attack Harbin, which Is fortified, but after destroying the telegraph Hues will rush north to the Siberian road, destroy it effectively at the Mutan river, where the bridge is a half mile loug, and perhaps at the Muren river. This would shut off Vladivostok from all relief by way of the Siberian road. With the city shut off by water also, it would be useless as a base of any sort. H. The recent attacks are said by the Japanese to be merely efforts to cover the movements of the transports. (new phone) J- B-CARPEMTER. meter Dt. eieter mo The certainty that the Japanese are in northeast Manchuria is regarded by the American, German and English naval officers here as the gravest sort of news for Russia. H.
