EAR HATH When I w i i England I heard several aneC- do s of the C*u n f id her frmily from a lady, who received them om her iend, the governess of the royal children. This governess, a very interesting young lady, was the orphrn daughter of a Scottish clergyman. During the first year of her r idence at Windsor, her mother died. When she first received news of her serious illness, the applied to the Qnesn for permission to resign " er situation, fueling that to her mother she ow a more sacred duty than even to her sovereign. The Queen, who had been much pleased with her, would no1, hear to her making this sacrifice, bat Mid, in a tone of the moat gentle sympathy, "Go at onee to year mother, child; •' y with her as long as she needs, and then come back to us. I will keep your place for yon. Prince Albert and I will hear the children'* lessons; so in any event, let your mind be at rest in regard to your pupils." Beauty when viewed by the sea shore always seems more beautiful than elsewhere. Wb6 Her it be owing to the parity of the atmosphere, which impar a charm of eahnesH and elasticity both to the object and the vision; to the ideas of spree and grandeur which a contemplation of the ocean always engenders., acd which, perhaps, expand the appreciative iculties : or D that menta' repose which comes wi;h a respite from lifo's cares, and causes all things to be seen through a rosin medium—whether such keenness of appreciation spring from one or all of these incentives, there are few who havo not experienced its reality, and who have not in their minds a treasury of illustration. By the sea shore each pleasant object, animate or inanimate, assumes a new and strange attraction, kot the natural scenery alone— though for that matter there never yet was an "ugly" coast save to the eye of a wary mariner —but churches, houses, bridges, the very horses thatduw your carriage, if they could have the least pretention, under ordinary circi -nstances, to good looks—are inv t 4 by the briny sea air with an enhanced measure, a novel halo of comeliness. attorney at law, PITTSTON, PENH'A GROCERS, 103 Murray, near West Street, + "NEW YORK. The governess went, and had several weeks of sweet, mourn'il cenmunion with her dying mother; then, when she had seen that dear form laid to sleep under the daisies in the old kirk-yard, she returned to the palace, where the loneliness of the royal grandeur would have oppressed her sorrowing heart beyond endurance, bad it not bfen for the gracious, womanly sympathy of the Qu » n, who came every day to her school-room—aw the considerate kindness of her young pupils. A year went by ; the first anniversary of her great loss dawned upon herD and she was overwhelm 1 as never before by the utter loneliness of hei grief. She felt that no one in all that great household, knew how much goodness and sweetnesB passed out of mortal life, that day.a year agC —or could give with her one tear, one thought to that grave under the Scottish daisies. Every morning before breakfast, which the elder children took with their father and mother, in the pleasant crimson parlor looking, oat on the terrace at Windsor, ner pupils came to the school-room, for a brief religious excercise. This morning, the voice of the governess trembled in reading the se/ipture for the day—some words of divine tenderness were too much for her poor, lonely, grieving heart—her strength gave way, and laying her head on the desk before her, she burst into tears—murmuring, "Oh, Mother! Mother !"— One after another the children stole out of the room and went to their mother, to tell her how sadly their governess was feeling; and that soft-hearted monarch exclaiming, "Oh poor girl! it is the anniversary of her mother's death," hurried to the school-room, where she found Miss struggling to regain her composure. "My poor child," she said—"I am sorry the children disturbedfyou this morning. I meant to have given orders that yon should have this day entirely toDyouself. Take it, as a sad and sacred holiday—I will hear the lessons of the children." And then she added, "To show you that I have not forgotten this mournful anniversary, I bring you this gift," clasping on her arm a beautiful mourning bracclot, attached to | which was a locketfor her mother's hair, marked with the date of that mother's death. What wonder that the orphan kissed with tears this gift and the more than royal hand that bestowed it! This was Victoria fifteen years ago—and I don't believe she has morally "advanced backward" since then. " Holy man," said the King, " I Cmetol rn how to be happy." We hold that—in general, women arc more attractive in the country than the town ; the setting of nature is superior to that of art; and women of tolerable tact and culture have a hundred charms incident to the permissible dishabille of rustic surrounding, and the piquant adaptation to unusual conditions, which, in the coantry, lend alurement to . their society. Another little anecdote, which shows her simplicity of character and shrewdness of perception, was told me by a gentleman, who once enjoyed the pleasure of a very informal interview with her, under rather peculiar circumstances. ■My friend, Mr. W , is a person of very artistic tastes—a passionate picture lover. He had seen all the great paintings in the public galleries of Lor don, and hgd a strong desire to Bee those of Br k'ngham Palace which, that not be ng a "shi r 1 our s," were inaccessable to an ordinary conrtt set . Fortu le favored him at last He was the rother 01 a London carpet merchant, who had an order to put down new carpets in the state apartments of the palace— and so it chanced that the temptation came to my friend to put on a workman's blouse and thus enter the royal precincts, while the flag indicating the presence of the august family, floated defiantly ove the roof. So he effected an entrance, and wh a once within the royal halls, dropped his assumed character, and devoted himself to the pictures. It happened tha* he remained in one of the appartments after the workman had left, and while quite alone, the Queen came tripping in, wearing a plain white morning drees, and followed by two or three of her younger ehildren, dressed with like simplicity. She approached the supposed workman, and said: 'Tray, can you tell me when the new carpet will be put down in the Privy Council Chamber ?"—and he, thinking he had no right to appear to recognize the Queen under the circumstances, replied—"Really, madam—I cannot tell—but I will inquire." "8tay,'» she said abruptly, but not unkindly, "who are you ?—I perceive that you are not one of the workmen." The priest pleaded thgt he received the sacrifices, and was equally exposed. Another anecdote illustrating Victoria's admirable good sense and strict domestic dicipline came to me directly from one who witnessed the occurrence. One day when the Queen was present in her earriage at the military review, the Princess Royal, then rather a willful girl of about thirteen, sitting on the front seat, seemed disposed to be rather familiar and coquetish with some young officers of the escort.— Her Majesty gave several reproving looks, without avail—"winked at her but she wouldn't stay winked." At length, in flirting her handkerchief over the side of the carriage, she dropped it—too evidently not accidently. Instantly two or three young heroes sprang from their saddles to return it to her fair hand—but the awful voice, of royalty stayed them. "Stop, gentlemen 1" exclaimed the Queen—"leave it just where it lies. Now my daughter, get down from the carriage, and pick up your handkerchief." There was no help for it. The royal footman let down the steps for the little royal lady, who proceeded to lift from the dust the pretty piece of cambric and lace. She blushed a good deal, though she tossed her head saucily, and she was doubtless angry enough, but the mortifying lesson may have nipped in the bud her first impulse towards coquettry. It was hard, but it was wholesome. How many American mothers wouid be equal to such a piece of Spartan discipline 1—Oraee Greenwood. We learned, afterwards, that he proved himself to bo Bill Harper instead of Bill Jones, and he and his gal Jane got "spliced." Ai, thought I, here is a text for Broadway: " Take care of yourself, young men." How has Charlie, as his friend called him, taken care of himself, taken care of either soul or body, both gifUofthe great Giver? A well-knit manly frame, young, healthy, vigorous, with great beauty of person, a quick eye to see, a quick ear to hear, and mind naturally strong and active, he had received an education which might have fitted him for the highest position in the country. * More than all, he had an immortal soul for which Christ'died. Yet he was ruining this vigorous frame, this symmetry and beauty of person, this quick eye and ear, this manly step, this active mind, this acquired knowledge and power, this immorfal soul—all by indulging in low amusements and vices with companions of h is own choosing. " Ah," I thought, * would he but heed this word of warning whispered in his ear by his brother in sin, and heed and hc -r it as a text to a great sermon on a better lL'e. before it is too late, we might hope for him."— The words made a deep impression upon my mind and heart, and I too wonld like to whisper in the ear, especially of every young man and young woman, the word of warning, "Take care of yourself." EAR HATH When I w i i England I heard several aneC- do s of the C*u n f id her frmily from a lady, who received them om her iend, the governess of the royal children. We learned, afterwards, that he proved himself to bo Bill Harper instead of Bill Jones, and he and his gal Jane got "spliced." Ai, thought I, here is a text for Broadway: " Take care of yourself, young men." A well-knit manly frame, young, healthy, vigorous, with great beauty of person, a quick eye to see, a quick ear to hear, and mind naturally strong and active, he had received an education which might have fitted him for the highest position in the country. " Ah," I thought, * would he but heed this word of warning whispered in his ear by his brother in sin, and heed and hc -r it as a text to a great sermon on a better lL'e. before it is too late, we might hope for him."— The words made a deep impression upon my mind and heart, and I too wonld like to whisper in the ear, especially of every young man and young woman, the word of warning, "Take care of yourself."
