The citizens of the stricken city are fighting desperately to stem the tide of crimson flame that threatens to engulf every business house of importance within the territory of trade. More men are hurrying from Jersey City, New York and Brooklyn, but, despite the floods of water that, are being deluged over the blazing roofs, the destroyer is still reaching out its myriad arms like atgigantic ociopus and gathering block after block of valuable property. Some Estimates Go as High as $250,000,000 Baron de Rosen is said to be seriously disappointed and dispirited over the outconle of the negotiations. He strongly advocated and strove for peace in the earlier stages of the negotiations, but in the later stages bis views were overridden at St. Petersburg, and he merely followed Instructions. Personally Baron de Rosen is very popular among his colleagues, and many Japanese regret the circumstances necessitating his departure. WILKESBARBE, PA. Stop and Look! 15 Firemen Dead and Many Hanna Had Fairly Good Night. Washington, Feb. 8.—Senator Hanna passed only a fairly good night. His temperature this morning was 102, the highest point yet reached. in the Hospitals. Governor Warfield says that every safe deposit vault in the various insttutions is absolutely safe, that the records are preserved and that it is next to impossible for serious danger to happen to documents contained therein. At least 15 firemen are believed to have lost their lives, though as yet no roll call has been made. The hospitals are filled with firemen who have succumbed to the strain of their terrible work. The citizens of the stricken city are fighting desperately to stem the tide of crimson flame that threatens to engulf every business house of importance within the territory of trade. More men are hurrying from Jersey City, New York and Brooklyn, but, despite the floods of water that, are being deluged over the blazing roofs, the destroyer is still reaching out its myriad arms like atgigantic ociopus and gathering block after block of valuable property. The fire covers everything south of Faystto street, to Light, thence north to Lexington, thepce west to Liberty, thence south to Hopkins place, thence south to Pratt street, thence east to Rowley's wharf and Pratt street, and thence In a direct line to a point on West.falls avenue, GOO feet north of Block street. The Geodetic Survey giving out this statement of area at 11 o'clock, says it includes 140 acres. Some Estimates Go as High as $250,000,000 Baron de Rosen is said to be seriously disappointed and dispirited over the outconle of the negotiations. He strongly advocated and strove for peace in the earlier stages of the negotiations, but in the later stages bis views were overridden at St. Petersburg, and he merely followed Instructions. Personally Baron de Rosen is very popular among his colleagues, and many Japanese regret the circumstances necessitating his departure. WILKESBARBE, PA. Stop and Look! 15 Firemen Dead and Many Hanna Had Fairly Good Night. Washington, Feb. 8.—Senator Hanna passed only a fairly good night. His temperature this morning was 102, the highest point yet reached. in the Hospitals. Governor Warfield says that every safe deposit vault in the various insttutions is absolutely safe, that the records are preserved and that it is next to impossible for serious danger to happen to documents contained therein. At least 15 firemen are believed to have lost their lives, though as yet no roll call has been made. The hospitals are filled with firemen who have succumbed to the strain of their terrible work. Suspicious character are being arrested. Martial law was formally declared at noon, superseding police regulations. Every saloon in the city ha-: been ordered closed. Evans Bros. Hurst & Co. raged with unrestrained fury continuously for nearly twenty-four hours. The fire swept its consuming way eastward on Baltimore street after having destroyed almost all of the large stores and warehouses In the wholesale district around Hopkins place ahd all the buildings on both sides of Baltimore street from Howard to Holliday street, from Charter and Baltimore to Charles and Lexington and on Fayette street from Charles to Holliday, including a total of about twenty blocks of the most modern and substantial business buildings in Baltimore.36 West Market Street.
