Mr. Charles Newton, keeper of Creek and Roman antiquities in the British Museum, recently visited Athens in order to examine the objects excavated by Dr. Schlieman near the supposed site of ancient Troy ; and on April :!0th he read a paper upon the subject at a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries in London. He says that Scheilman pottery is older and ruder than any discovered at Rhodes, Cyprus or Ancient Germany, and cannot bo classed as Hllcnio or even Creco-Phoenecian. Indeed, all Kcheliman's Dvorks af art are both non-Helienic and pre-Helienic, the same is true of the gold and silver ornaments and vessels. They are ruder than the rudest specimens of Hclienic period, l'rof. Max Muller said that his conclusions were like Mr. Newton's. In Homer Trojans are different from Creeks, but they are no' barbarous ; their armor is worth taking ; their gold ornaments preferable to the Creek. Schlieman's relics are not Homeric.
