GRATE, or No. 1, How the Erie Road was First Ironed Pittston, Pa. EGG, or No. z, STOVE, No. 3 and 4, 3.00, Ever, over When the New York and Erie Railroad was originally built, rails made of English iron, and costing $80 a bar were used from New York toOtisville. In the straitened financial circumstances of the company in that day says the Mercury, the work must have stopped if opportunity had not offered for obtaining iron cheaper. In 1840, the Lackawanna iTon and Coal (Join- Many, which had been organized at Harrison, now Scranton, in 1843 by the Scrantr.ns, was struggling against great difficulties for success. In the year first named the Erie company made a contract with the Iron company for 12.000 tons of Iron rail for the Delaware and Susquenanna Divisions to be made and delivered at the mouth of the Lackawaxen r'ver during the years 1847-8. The fulfillment of this contract against obstacles that ordinary men would have failed to Conquer, gave the iron company the first step towards the great eminence and importance it now boasts, and the railroad company saved from bankruptcy and ruin, as it was enabled to open its road to Binghamton four days ahead of the time required by law. The first fifteen hundred tons of the iron were delivered at Lackawaxen in the early part of 1847. It was carted in wagons to Archbald, Pa., and thence by the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company's railroad to Honesdale, and from thence to Dackawaxen by canal. The Erie agents there took charge of it and delivered it by canal at Port Jervis. and it was laid from there to Otisville. Owing to the delay, the Erie was subjected to in gaining entrance into Pennsylvania at the "Glass House Rocks" above Port Jervis, speed in delivery of the iron was required. An arrangement was made with the Iron company for the delivery of the balance of the iron at different points along the route, Hundreds of tcapis were put to work, and the iron was carted over the. rough hilly roads of Northern Pennsylvania to Narrowsburg, Cocheton, Equlnunk, or Mordville, Stockkport, Summit and Lanesboro. Thus a simultaneous laying of rails took place along the required distance, and the railroad company was saved and the Iron company made. J Nearly Opposite th« Miners' Savinos Bass. To this class of subjects emphatically belongs the venerated uauieof ropis, brought the cattle, one after another, into the swift current, when they were hurled over the falls. One morning, as the man stood smoking his pipe,' his hand 011 the lever, very probaly busy with his dinner, and assuredly not wrought up to any heroic rapture of resolve, the ascending car (loaded with coal) at one end of the cable broke, and fell crashing into the dark shaft, to be scattered into a thousand fragments. He knew that in the next minute the cable released from the strain, would lly back and fall with crushing weight on the rickety beams and boards of the roof. Death was absolutely certain if he did not escape from the shed. Hut if he took his hand from the lever, the deeendiug car, full of men, must fall one or two hundred feet. He had but one instant to face his death or theirs, and choose between them. There was a boy in the back of the shed. The man motioned to him with his head to go out. Then he tightened his hold on the lever. The loosened cable struck and caught somewhere below against the shaft. Surely God meant it should so strike! It was the delay of but a breath of time; but it was enough. The car grated with a jar against the ground far below, its occupants stepped leisurely out, while the man who had saved them above, threw himself from under the shed, Just as its roof, beams, pulley and all, crashed down on the spot where he had been standing. Two or three weeks ago, an accident did not occur near Scranton, Pa. The newspapers missed a sensational horror, and a dozen men 1 nstead of being hurled into eternity without time to breathe a prayer, walked quietly home to their dinners, quite uuconcious that Death had had them by throats. It might, after all, be worth our while to look into the cause of the loss of this tragedy to the world, we should have been keen enough to unearth the guilty party if it had occurred.
